Outdoor recreation habits in metropolis and rural areasThis study aims to examine the perception of nature and outdoor recreation habits from an urban-rural prospective. The urbanization process continues in Sweden and the populations of the cities are growing continuously. Trends to build more compact and ?climate smart? reigns and with this a risk that green areas and areas where outdoor recreation can be practiced are situated further and further away from the urban population. Analyzing the responses from a survey made by the research program Friluftsliv i förändring 2007 we have examined if and which differences exists between urban and rural areas regarding their perception of nature, outdoor recreation habits and factors influencing the practice of outdoor recreation. This research is limited to the region Västra Götaland and we have sorted the respondents from the region in two groups, one urban group where the respondents lives in Gothenburg and one rural group where the respondents lives on the countryside. Based on our questions we have analyzed the survey answers and with help of previous research reached our result. Our conclusions are that there are differences in attitudes both regarding what can be perceived as nature but also regarding what can be perceived as outdoor recreation and in which amount outdoor recreation is practiced. Differences in access to nature characterized environments have significance in our outdoor recreation habits and our nature perception. In the urban area outdoor recreation is practiced less than in the rural area. The causes are found in the urban environment where the respondents state that lack of time and scarceness of suitable places are impeding factors. In terms of perceptions of nature, we find similarities and differences between urban and rural areas. Forests and mountains are historically rooted natural environments that reflect a romantic view of nature, and here there is a large consensus. Differences are found regarding environments that more or less are affected by human activities , such as by economic activities, has a tendency to be perceived as nature in a lower extent in urban than in rural areas. This could be related to different traditions in outdoor recreation which derives from different aims with the nature experience. Our result also show that attitudes possibly change when people migrates both from rural to urban areas but also in the opposite direction.
