the development of a chair suitable for the elderly
This report summarizes a Bachelor Degree Project in Integrated Product Development, carried out during the fall 2007 till spring 2008 by three students at the Product Design Engineering Program at the University of Skövde. The project was performed in cooperation with Lundbergs Möbler AB in Tibro. Lundbergs wants to start selling furniture to the public eldercare. The purpose of this project was to adjust one of their chairs. The project layout was to first make a preliminary investigation where the market, competitors? assortment and the purchasing process are studied. This preliminary investigation also contains visits to old age homes and interviews with the staff members and the responsible managers. After the preliminary investigation> comes the product development process containing idea generations, concept development and manufacturing of the prototype. In this phase tools like CADmodels, sketches and ergonomic data are used. The result was a chair for the public eldercare, with the possibilities to adjust the height and the depth for the seat. It also has functions to make it easier to use for both the elders and the staff members. Finally, a small evaluation of the definitive prototype was carried out in order to gather information about potential customers? opinions regarding the prototype. This report contains all documentation from the project and also explains the process from start to the evaluation of the final result.
