Föräldrars attityder till övervikt hos barn


Background: Overweight in children has been an increasing problem in recent years and research show that early intervention is important. The parents? diet- and exercise habits are important to lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle for their children. Aim: To investigate parents? attitudes towards overweight in children. Method: An explorative qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews with ten parents who visited a child welfare center. Results: The parents rarely had any experience with overweight in children, but their opinions were negative because of the associated health risks. The parents? attitudes are that the amount of physical activity and the children?s diet is an influence. They also have the opinion that overweight children often have overweight parents. All parents have the possibility to influence and it?s therefore their responsibility to teach their children a healthy lifestyle according to the informants. They think that the most important factors are physical activity, diet, health and heritage.Conclusion: Parents? attitudes towards overweight can be categorized into four factors: physical activity, diet, health and heritage. Health related problems are the reason that parents worry about overweight in children. Physical activity and diet is believed to be the biggest factors in preventing overweight while heritage is of less importance.
