Master thesis for Mechanical engineering, at the University of Lund. Incorporated in project Pondora.The purpose of this master thesis is to compare the existing one way packaging system with a proposed return crate system not yet available in Sweden. The comparison is focused on packaging handling in the grocery store.The purpose is also to investigate how operating return crate systems in Norway and Finland function, identify, the problems they have encountered and survey economic and technical aspects. The knowledge we hereby have acquired was subjectively evaluated in the thesis.The Swedish survey has a focus on meat and bread. The surveys in Finland and Norway contain all the products utilizing the studied return crate systems.We have surveyed how the handling of transport packages for meat & provision and bread is done in the store. We are giving an account of the differences in the handling between one way corrugated board packages and return crate systems in the store.A comparison between the Swedish store managers viewpoints on a proposed return crate system and experiences from Norway and Finland is done in the thesis.We find that the handling of the transport packaging takes less time in the store with a return crate than with a corrugated board package.Whether there are to be a deposit or not is a great concern for the managers in Sweden. They firmly believe that a deposit will cost them time and money. We believe that the loss of crates will be smaller with a deposit.We also find that:? Exposure of products in the return crate is possible? Card board boxes are easier to use for exposure? It is possible to transport more than one kind of products in a return crate? When asked, people generally believed that transport damages were lower with return crates? The personnel in the stores visited were positive towards deliveries in return crates? The stores we have visited would manage the storage of the return crates? The managers do not believe that the return crate system can be used as a marketing tool
