Det postkoloniala resandet i Egypten

En diskursanalys av resebroschyrer

During the colonial period Europeans travelled to Egypt. The French had explored Egypt through the mapping and this was published in a collection of books called Déscription de l?Égypte. Exhibitions and publications like Déscription de l?Égypte, which aimed at giving a view of Egypt, raised public interest for journeys to the Orient. Although the concept of Orient in general and many pictures of Egypt in particular were created by Europeans during colonial times, this essay argues that these understandings are still prevalent in present-time, postcolonial travel brochures of Egypt. Therefore representation of Egypt through postcolonial theory in Swedish travel brochures is the main focus of this study. This is illustrated through the use of pictures which indicate that the Occident has a certain power over the Orient. At the same time, this study also shows that what is indicated in the travel brochure not always corresponds to the reality. Postcolonial theory is used to bring out the discourses conveyed in pictures and texts in Swedish travel brochures. The brochures studied are derived from leading Swedish travel companies Apollo, Detur, Fritidsresor, Jambo Tours, Kuoni, Solresor, Temaresor and Ving. From these brochures, the essay focuses on the representation of three cases, i.e. Hurghada, Luxor and grand tours and cruises along the Nile.
