Det politiska beslutsfattandet under Tsunamikatastrofen

Vilken roll spelade media?

In December 2004 an earthquake coursed waves that hit Thailand. Over 5000 people died, and Sweden was the tourist country that has been effected the worst. The catastrophe precipitated Sweden in crises and the demand became high for Swedish government to act. Swedes followed the development via media, why media became the crucial element for how the public perceived politicians? acting. During the crises a number of political decisions were made: the decision to abolish the law of inheritance and gift taxes earlier than first decided and the decision to use Herkules airplane. The most legitimate decision model is the rational one, which is not used in reality. The political decision processes are complex and confused, which was also the case during Tsunami. But a crises as Tsunami creates possibilities for actors, which media could be one of, to impact the political decisions. We have examined the way media impacts political decision making by studying the media coverage, and by interviewing political decision makers. We established that media is an active actor in the political decision processes. The impact that media posses occurs in short run by forcing the features in the decision process which otherwise could fail to occur.
