Introduction/Background: Economic evaluations help decision-makers to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation. Information generated from CEA can support evaluations of a new intervention with current praxis. The evaluations also provide information as to whether an intervention is cost-effective, both in economic terms and in health gains. Objective: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the use of economic evaluations in public health, with a focus on CEA. Use of economic evaluations is regarded as both a method for evaluation and as support for informed decisions. Method: The thesis is a literary review. The collection of data is performed by a systematic search for literature within the field of research. The analysis of data is made from both a quantitative and qualitative approach and is presented as themes and categories. Result: The use of CEA is reported to be low to moderate. CEA is regarded to be the most rationale method for decisions concerning resource allocation. The low use of CEA is due to the low quality of published studies. The lack of knowledge is also a reason for its limited use. There is a reported increase of interest in future use of CEA. CEA contributes to important and appreciated information for decisions-makers. To increase the use of CEA, more education in health economics is needed. There is a necessity for decision-makers to understand economics better. The evaluations need to be less specific. Discussion: The possibility to generalize the result from CEA has decreased. This is because the evaluation is too specific and is also due to the lack of studies maintaining good quality. Many decisions lack cost-effective considerations because of the limited information available to decision-makers. It can be considered as an important finding that the current availability of published studies is limited.
