Cykelolyckor i korsningar
Hur kan trafiksäkerheten förbättras?
Stockholm city has recently raised its ambitions for bicycle traffic, the goal is to achieve a larger andsafer bicycle traffic. But cyclists are more vulnerable on the roads than other vehicle users because of the lack of protection. This means that a large proportion of road safety for cyclists is based on the design of the traffic environment. Since most serious bicycle accidents are those that occur in conflict with motor vehicles, and the majority of these accidents occur at intersections, these areas are of great importance forcyclist?s safety. The purpose of this paper is to highlight bicycle accidents at intersections and to suggest improvements in three accident-prone junctions in Stockholm. This is achieved by the study of accident statistics, literature and finally three case studies. The literature study focused on cyclists, traffic safety and traffic safety measures. By describing the specific conditions and problems of cyclists a better picture of how this mode of transportation best work in traffic is provided. The factors that are important to consider, when road safety efforts are made, are then described. The literature studies are completed by describing specific examples of safety measures. The database STRADA is used to identify three intersections with the highest number of bicycle accidents in the past five years in Stockholm. These junctions were then studied, minor points at the intersections were selected for detailed observations using a simplified method of traffic conflict techniques. The observations during the case studies formed the basis for recommendations of the road safety measures in the intersections.A very rough calculation was done on the anticipated effects of the proposed measures. They showed that about 15 bicycle accidents of a total of 29 could be avoided with the proposed measures. Although the calculations are not exact, they show that there is a potential to increase road safety for cyclists in the studied intersections.
