Energy is an important issue in the current world which significantly affects sustainability and development. Energy generation and use are major sources of CO2 emissions which is one of the most important driving factors in global climate changes. The amount of energy used in house hold section can lead to estimation of the amount of CO2 emitted within this section which subsequently would be a ground to better management and maintaining a sustainable society. This study which is a bachelor?s project in sustainable energy, deals with estimation of CO2 emission from different types of residential houses in Sweden. An extensive literature review on energy use in Sweden by different residential sectors has been conducted. Collected data from the literature survey have been summarized in an analytical model that calculates the amount of CO2 emissions from the residential sector in Sweden. Residential sectors divided into smaller subsectors: houses, cottages, and Multi-family residential. Energy use in each sector was determined in form of electricity, running hot water and heating. An analytical model regarding the estimation of the country's total CO2 emissions from the residential sector has been determined. Additionally, a study on energy efficiency impact on CO2 emissions and any discrepancies between rental and condominium has been carried out. Furthermore, an evaluation of different heating options and their impact on CO2 emissions have been done. CO2 emissions in million tons in 2011, according to calculations based on the Swedish Electricity supply (svensk elmix) calculated was 1.63, 2.09 and 0.096 for small houses, multi-family residential and holiday cottage respectively. It means that total CO2 emission was 3.82 million tons in year 2011. The report contains more details about the method and results for CO2 emissions based on the Nordic Electricity supply (nordisk elmix).
