Analys av leksaksrobot, skapande av monster

During spring 2009 a three meter tall and laughing robot was developed in collaboration between Royal Institute of Technology and Royal University College of Fine Arts. The robots function and esthetics is based on an existing toy robot called Elmo. Elmo is 30 cm tall but now the goal was to make it 1000 times bigger in order to present it on the spring exhibition of Royal University College of Fine Arts. Due to only four months of developing and building time a demand of fast determination and good planning was required. In order to make a good structure for the project it is divided into five phases: Analysis of Elmo, planning, concept development, detail construction and finally product development and testing. In the first phase valuable knowledge is obtained according to the movements and geometry of Elmo. Furthermore a series of ideas and concepts are developed and evaluated for different parts of the robot. Among them can we find an innovative construction for the axis which is later on used in the real product. Different types of motors, gears and transmission is also evaluated. Under the next phase detail construction components being developed and drawings made. The controlling system for the motors is also developed here. The last and longest phase of the project deals with manufacturing and testing. Here it is decided which parts that is going to manufactured and how to do so. This phase also deal which parts that should be ordered and which to be bought in the store. Finally the robot is assembled and tested to be prepared for the exhibitionDuring the exhibition the robot receives good reviews from both visitors and press. It is published with picture and text in two of Sweden?s biggest daily newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter. Due to the good reviews and the fact that the robot was finished in time the main goal to deliver a valuable product on a specific date was achieved.
