The problems caused by the current engine casing in aluminum for Volvo Buses Corp. are the mainfoundation for this degree project. Lack of maintenance combined with a construction poorlyadjusted for assembly has resulted in the fact that the engine casings rarely get reassembled whenthe service is completed.The degree project has mainly been following ?Olssons. F, Principkonstruktion, Compendium, Lund?and ?Olssons. F, Primärkonstruktion, Compendium, Lund?, the two compendiums work like manualsfor the first phases during a construction project.The main purpose of the project is to adjust the construction for the profile of demands and searchfor an alternative material better suited.Different methods have proved that the plastic material PP/EPDM is a better alternative thanaluminum. A plastic construction has several benefits such as softer shapes, sound absorption andlower costs. With the new material a different shape was created with several integrated features.The most appropriate manufacturing method for PP/EPDM and the determined production volume isvacuum forming. The estimated cost for the engine casing is about 450 SEK, cheaper than thecurrent one and multifunctional at the same time.
