ANALYS AV FLERBOSTADSHUS

Med inriktning på ytfördelningen över tiden

Currently, there are no clear statistics on how the floor plan and room size in apartment buildings has changed over time since the postwar period. The statistics available is average area per apartment which can be found on Statistics Sweden's website. This report has the aim to increase knowledge about how the Swedish home have changed over time. The questions that the report will answer are:For apartment buildings, how has the living area been distributed since the postwar period? Why has the area distribution changed over time?A survey of the houses built during 1950-2014 was made before questions could be answered. A case study was also made which a total of 90 apartments were analyzed and divided into three eras, the people´s home, the million programme and the neomodernism. The study is based on the analysis of the surface distribution in the size 3 room apartments. The rooms selected for analysis were: hallway, kitchen, living room, bedroom and the bathroom. The result of the study is presented in tables, where the average size of each room and the total apartment area of each epoch have been calculated. In order to view the surface distribution over time, bar graphs were made, where the calculated average values are compared. A percentage comparison of the surface distribution of each epoch is reported in three pie charts. The average size of the total area of the apartments has increased since the postwar period. From the people´s home to the million programme the total surface increased from 75.4 to 75.9 sqm. Then the surface area increased to 79.7 sqm from the million programme to the neomodernism. The result of the cut surface of the apartments in the people's home, the neomodernism and the million programme is as follows: hallway 10.4 / 10.3 / 11.0 sqm, kitchen 12.7 / 13.4 / 14.6 sqm, living room 22.7 / 21.0 / 22.3 sqm, bedroom 25.2 / 24.2 / 22.7 sqm and bathrooms 3.4 / 4.5 / 6.5 sqm.A factor that had an impact on the change of surface distribution over time, is the demand on the open floor plan, where people´s social life has had a significant role in the design of the living area. Other factors such as availability, quality and higher standards have shaped residential development. The conclusions that can be drawn are that the majority of the rooms have increased in size since the postwar period, however the size of each room has not increased significantly. One explanation for these small changes in size, may be that several of the apartments that have been studied are from Jonkoping and close to each other in time, but belong to different eras. It may be reasonable to assume that the differences will be small if the same developer and architect planned several apartments.
