SUMMARYThe demands on the public environment are big and in particular on the environment of communication which we spend a lot of time in on our way to work, school etc. The city-approach is a road section that leads from the periphery of the city to the centre of the city, often through boring and meaningless industrial areas that displays the back side of the city to the voyager on the city-approach. The intentions of this thesis in landscape architecture has been to study one of the two city-approaches to the city of Luleå, the close surroundings and contextual position in the city and not at least give suggestions of ways how the city-approach can be changed, clarified and improved. The study of the city-approach has been made by studying literature that concern city-approaches and the architecture of roads in general. Studies of different analysis methods has been made to find appropriate approaches to work with the specific study of the city-approach to Luleå. Analysis methods were chosen and used on the work with the city-approach. The city-approach is leading to Luleå and to be able to create a united city-approach the city is needed to be put in a context in a city-analysis which drag up subject such as the history and structure of the city. The city-analysis was made to discover what kind of city Luleå is and if the character of the city can be applied on the city-approach. The city-approach was analysed in a character-analysis where the city-approach was divided into character-sequences and nodes. The character-sequences and nodes were inventoried by driving on the city-approach and biking and walking in the close surroundings. The result of the character-analysis was declared through a SWOT-analysis that straightens out the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the different character-sequences and nodes. From without this result and the literature studies and city-analysis design ideas developed for the different character-sequences and nodes. The design ideas give suggestion to change of everything from the ?furnishing? of the city-approach to the structure of vegetation in the close surroundings. The core of the thesis is about transforming the city-approach to a more united road section with a logical transition between the forest landscape and the city with a rise in intensity the closer to the city centre one gets.
