The thesis aims to be an informative study for landscape architects and hopes to contributeto an understanding of ways water can be used and managed at sites lacking open, greensurfaces.The title "intelligent water design" should evoke the reader?s thoughts concerning intelligentaspects of water. Text, images and the design proposition give hints about these aspects.In the first part of this thesis, various examples of water design are presented. The chosenexamples are all applicable in urban environments with a high percentage of impervioussurfaces.The second part examines Gjutarplan, an urban square in the centre of Kallhäll, in Järfälla,north of Stockholm. Gjutarplan is first framed in a geographical and historical context.

Genom historien har det skett stora temperaturväxlingar och vad man kan se idag är att medeltemperaturen på jorden ökar, samt att dramatiska vädersituationer verkar bli allt vanligare. Klimatet förändras naturligt men våra utsläpp av växthusgaser bidrar med att ytterligare förstärka denna trend. De förändringar som vi ser idag förutspås eskalera i framtiden. Ökade medeltemperaturer leder till att glaciärer successivt smälter och det kan komma att innebära dramatiskt förändrade landskapsbilder. Havsytenivån höjs och kustnära- och låglänta områden riskerar att svämmas över.

Water constructions - as a design element in public spaces is the title of this Master thesis, with a focus on waters function and meaning in the urban environment. By way of introduction, mans relationship to places is described and the factors that contribute to the reality that we prefer some places more than others. A good place to stay is open but well defined, gives protection, offers a good view and is varying in topography and vegetation, together with contents of single landscape elements like visible water. This study then continues to discuss mans relationship to water and its means for our wellbeing. Despite the fact that people have a different relations to water due to personality, background and age, it?s an element that raises positive feelings, interest and aesthetic pleasure for most people.
