This study is about differences in knowledge regarding animals. In the study five year old preschool children from a city were compared to five year old preschool children in the Suburbs with multicultural background. The study is also about where children´s knowledge about animals comes from and how educators can make a positive difference. To find this out standardized interviews was used on 23 children from four different preschools, two preschools in the Suburbs with 15 children and two preschools in the city with 13 children. A survey was sent out to the educators within these preschools to gather background information on what the children do regarding animals.

This thesis aims to examine the nature of the medial compartment regarding the reporting of problems in conjunction with Suburbs. Previous research on discrimination in the media shows that people living in the Suburbs considers Suburbs being portrayed negatively in the media. They perceive that this has a negative effect on integration which in turn increases the risk of stigmatization. This study strives to contribute to the clarification of whether medias means of reporting around this area can help in the development of problems in Suburbs by examining whether there is a reflection of actual political focus in the media or if media only plays a stigmatizing role. The research method used has been quantitative content analysis, making an overview of how much space is given to the different types of reporting. The thesis concludes that the reporting examined in this study did not appear to be of a structurally discriminatory nature, even if that type of reporting occurred.

Nowadays in our society we find it hard for some groups of people to integrate in society. It?s known by media, that the Suburbs are presented by a negative view, which often highlights the social problems in these Suburbs. We can see that the Suburbs still get associated with social problems such as segregation, different attitudes and behaviors, cultural conflicts, poorness etc. This kind of presentation of the Suburbs affects not only the society but also the individual living and the personal perception of the individual.

The emerging Swedish Suburbs of the 1960- 1970s started out as a utopian vision: a new city for the modern people. Media presented a different view and emphasized the inhuman livingenvironment and the social problems of the Suburbs. Nationwide there have been local attempts to avoid this negative publicity by adjusting identified suburban problems. Due to medial presentation the Suburbs are still associated with segregation, criminality and social problems. The presentation of Suburbs and immigrants affects not only the process of integration and the general public idea of integration processes, but also the individual perception of themselves and their living.

ABSTRACTSegregation is more and more common in the Swedish society, especially in those Suburbs called ?miljonprogramsförorter? which are characterized as grey and boring districts with low status. These Suburbs are often mentioned in the media and the public associate them with immigrants, problems and crimes. Kungsmarken in Karlskrona is one of these Suburbs and the purpose of this essay was to compare the media image with the images local participants had of Kungsmarken. The questions I brought up were how media was describing Kungsmarken, how this image has contributed to the low status of Kungsmarken, and if this image was reflecting the local participants? images.

The objective of this research was to study how two newspapers in Sweden, Aftonbladet and Expressen are creating an image of the Stockholm suburb Rinkeby. The method used to do the study was qualitative content analysis. Ten articles were chosen, five off either newspaper and were found on the internet homepages of the newspapers on 15 November of 2013 and 27 January of 2014. Several theories were used in the study. Agenda setting theory, a media theory that explains the power of media, Figuration theory developed by Norbert Elias that deals with power struggles between different groups in society.

The society of Suburbs is frequently discussed in media, which often focus on the problems related to these areas. The purpose of this Master?s thesis is to examine how Swedish contemporary youth literature may contribute to create, strengthen and articulate social representations of the society of Suburbs. The analysis is based upon six youth novels published during 2003 to 2007. The theoretical framework consists of two parts and is based on Anthony Giddens? theories about late modern society in which the youth novels in our study take place, and those living conditions that this society creates.

In this study we examine five selected media organisations with different forms of productionplatforms that all appear in Stockholm's southern and western Suburbs, which are part of themillion-construction project. Their stated ambition is to present an alternative image of theSuburbs than that found in mainstream media. They want to portray themselves instead ofconstantly being described by others.The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of the reason for the emergenceof these media, their visions according to the media producers themselves, and how theyrelate to mainstream media. The study is based on a theoretical framework that focuses ondiverse approaches of alternative media and the journalists' role in a democratic society.The wide data analysis from qualitative informant interviews, with small observations as acomplement, showed results indicating criticism against the misrepresentation of StockholmSuburbs in mainstream media. Furthermore the results show that the overall dissatisfaction ofthis misrepresentation is one of the main reasons why the different media, which are bothrepresented by citizens and journalists, were founded.

The aim of this two years master thesis in Library and Information Science is to examine how librarians and library managers in the three Stockholm Suburbs of Alby, Fisksätra and Rinkeby think and reason about the role of public libraries in the integration process. The aim is also to examine whether their perception differ from that of local politicians at the municipal level. The theoretical framework is Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hanses model for analysis of the local library profile, and Jose Alberto Diaz theory on the integration process. The method used is qualitative interviews. The interviews were recorded and the content was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results of this study show that the library services in the three Suburbs, rather than being stipulated by the legal demand for special services towards immigrants, are based on the needs of the local population.
