There are several typical ideas about the Suburb. The Suburb is often associated with criminality and other social problems such as segregation. The purpose of this essay is to study the picture of how the Suburb is constructed in a media context. The method used to answer the purpose of this study is critical discourse analysis, based on the thoughts of Norman Fairclough. The central theoretical ideas for this study are representation, stereotypes and racialization.

Nowadays in our society we find it hard for some groups of people to integrate in society. It?s known by media, that the Suburbs are presented by a negative view, which often highlights the social problems in these Suburbs. We can see that the Suburbs still get associated with social problems such as segregation, different attitudes and behaviors, cultural conflicts, poorness etc. This kind of presentation of the Suburbs affects not only the society but also the individual living and the personal perception of the individual.

The emerging Swedish Suburbs of the 1960- 1970s started out as a utopian vision: a new city for the modern people. Media presented a different view and emphasized the inhuman livingenvironment and the social problems of the Suburbs. Nationwide there have been local attempts to avoid this negative publicity by adjusting identified Suburban problems. Due to medial presentation the Suburbs are still associated with segregation, criminality and social problems. The presentation of Suburbs and immigrants affects not only the process of integration and the general public idea of integration processes, but also the individual perception of themselves and their living.

A great fire seized a Suburb in a small town in Sweden in the autumn of 2011. Parts of a shopping mall were burnt to the ground by youngsters. Due to the Suburb's earlier problems, the event was a tough ethical dilemma for the town's journalists.The purpose of this thesis was to study and examine the local newspapers ethical treatment of this event. How do they motivate their decisions on what to publish and what not to publish? How do the articles treat ethical dilemmas? What do the journalists think about ethical journalism?This study is based on a survey of the articles published about the fire in the two local newspapers seven days after the fire.

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze young people´s views on youth crime and segregation in ?multicultural? Suburb Hammarkullen in Gothenburg, Sweden.We especially want to point out their views on the relationship between segregation and youth crime as the underlying risk factor for criminality.Through group- and individual interviews with young people, we have tried to address the following issues:? What do young people in the Suburb think of segregation?? What are the views of young people in Hammarkullen about youth crimes?? How do young people in the Suburbs view the relationship between segregation and youth crime?To achieve our objective and to answer our questions, we have chosen to have a qualitative approach.Since the purpose of the essay is to get an idea of how the Suburban youth are looking at segregation, crime and the relationship between them, we believe that the qualitative approach is the right tool to use for this study.The empirical material consists of three interviews, one group-and two individual interviews, with 11 young people at the age of 16-18, conducted over a period of four weeks.In the results we will present how young people look at Suburban segregation, crime and the connection between them..

The purpose of the essay is to discuss from the theory about the established and the Outsiders if the Culture Centre Blå Stället can serve as a meeting point between the majority of the people and the minority of the people in Gothenburg. The idea of Blå Stället is that it shall work as a house available for everyone and as a cultural meeting point between people in and outside Angered. I argue if Blå Stället really is a place where people from Gothenburg as a whole go or if there are some hindrances for their visions. My study is comprised of interviews with three of the staff at Blå Stället. With the theory about the established and the outsiders I want to show that the division in the city between ?them? and ?us? has to do with differences of power.

The objective of this research was to study how two newspapers in Sweden, Aftonbladet and Expressen are creating an image of the Stockholm Suburb Rinkeby. The method used to do the study was qualitative content analysis. Ten articles were chosen, five off either newspaper and were found on the internet homepages of the newspapers on 15 November of 2013 and 27 January of 2014. Several theories were used in the study. Agenda setting theory, a media theory that explains the power of media, Figuration theory developed by Norbert Elias that deals with power struggles between different groups in society.

On September 4, 2013, two men were shot in the Suburb Biskopsgården in Gothenburg. This was the catalysts to a very problematic autumn in both Biskopsgården as in another Suburb, Hisingsbacka. The local media reports of the events were very through, where the newspaper Göteborgs-Posten took a leading role. It?s these reports which form the basis, the so called material of our essay.

The aim of this study is to examine the interaction between a group of multilingual, twelve-year-old children, and three libraries. The children live in a Suburb of a larger city. The three libraries are their school-library, the library in their Suburb and the main library in the city. We have examined if and how the children use the libraries, what the libraries mean to them in their daily life and what their possibilities are when it comes to participate in and influence activities and collections at the libraries. We have pursued qualitative interviews with sixteen children in grade six and three librarians, working with multilingual children at the three libraries.

The purpose of this study was to find out what some young adults who have grown up in Husby themselves for perception of the area, what do they think they brought with them of their childhood there, and find out what they think others do not live in Husby has view of the area. In our study we also tried to find out what the young adults raised in Husby think about the media's influence on public perception of the area Husby, and what they think about the neighborhood's future. The main results that we believe we have come up with is that the media seems to have a big role in the creation of our beliefs. The respondents indicate that they think the media portrays an unfair picture of the Suburb and its inhabitants. We believe it is very important that people meet to avoid the categories "us" and "them" to be formed.

In my essay, I write about the work at a pre-school in a segregated Suburb. I begin my essay with examples from my workday. In one case, it is about Sara, playing games where other children are excluded and she also exhibits a power game towards me. In the second example, it is about how a group of children conspire and expose both themselves and others for destructive conspiracy patterns. When I write down what happens in the group of children at my pre-school, I see patterns reminiscent of destructive gangs.

There are many good reasons to ponder about what it is that makes life worth living. To observe and reflect on what it is that gives a person a good quality of life is arguably the essential core of social-work. The aim of this research was to investigate how 15-year old youths interpret quality of life. The key areas that we explored in order to meet the research aims were: what did the youths interpret as a good quality of life for a 15-year old and for an adult, how did they view their own quality of life, and did they think that the regional context (i.e. if one lives in a big city or in a small town) affects how one interpret quality of life.The studywas based on interviews with four boys and four girls.
