Shame on you! A study of how individuals handle the feeling of shame.

The aim with this thesis was to acquire an understanding for how individuals handle the feeling of Shame in connection with cultural consumption. In order to capture the feeling of Shame we developed an interview method called the Backstabber interview technique. We found that the Backstabber interview technique successfully triggered feelings of Shame in connection to cultural consumption, which made it possible for us to study the handling of Shame. We found that our respondents tended to use different forms of accounts in order to handle the feeling of Shame. We categorized them into five accounts with relating sub-accounts.

The purpose of this study is to explain how Shame can be experienced by women with the stigmatizing illness of alcoholism. Another aim is to illustrate how this Shame can be affected in social interaction with others and by other circumstances. What can affect Shame in interaction with other people, from the view of female alcoholics? What other circumstances can affect the Shame, from the view of female alcoholics?This study features interviews with women who have successfully gone through the process of rehabilitation from the illness of alcoholism, have a long going and stable sobriety and arecurrently part of the work force. The study also features interviews with therapists specializing in the field of addiction recovery and have considerable experience in their fieldof working with women suffering from alcoholism.The subject matters Shame and stigma form the theoretical/analytical tools for this research.

Att mäta generell skam : En analys baserad på Raschmodellen

The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether Suzanne Retzinger?s linguistic cues for Shame and verbal behaviors for hiding Shame could be used to measure Shame in surveys based on Thomas Scheff?s theory of Shame. I created a measurement instrument consisting of 30 statements, which were all meant to measure general Shame.The instrument was administrated to 180 respondents studying at Karlstad University, of whom 4 respondents were removed from the data set due to lack of standardization. With the polytomous rasch model used for the analysis, data from 176 respondents were analyzed, of whom 124 respondents were female and 52 were male.The result showed that the measurement instrument?s statements should not be used together because the analysis indicated multidimensionality.

Skulden och skammen. : Närvaron av skuld och skam i missbruksbehandling av kvinnor.

The purpose of this study is to examine the personnel?s perspective on how the emotions Shame and guilt are present in the treatment of female addicts on an LVM institution. Three questions have been designed to meet the objective: How do they work in the treatment with guilt and Shame, how important is it to work with these feelings and what significance does genders have in relation to Shame, guilt and treatment? A qualitative approach and techniques have been used to obtain the result. The study's theoretical starting point consists of three themes: gender theory, labeling theory and a theoretical approach to the concepts of guilt and Shame.

Att se den osynliga skammen : - En kvalitativ studie om kunskapen om skam inom ekonomiskt bistånd

This study is about a social workers? knowledge of Shame. Shame in this context is the embarrassment and humiliation that many people feel when they have to apply for financial assistance which equates to approximately half a million people each year in Sweden. The aim of this study is to understand if and how social workers in this field become acquainted with Shame, and how it is exposed and then handled by the social workers in the meeting and work with clients. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, we also to some extent, need to study knowledge and how social workers obtain knowledge in social work.

"Skammen bränner" : En litteraturstudie med fokus på beskrivningar av skuld och skam kopplat till alkoholmissbruk

The aim of this study was to gain an understanding about how people with a former alcohol abuse expresses and gives meaning to feelings of guilt and Shame in autobiographical books. In particular the purpose of the study was to find out how the authors writes about feelings of guilt and Shame, whether it was expressed explicitly or implicitly, and which meaning the authors gives to feelings of guilt and Shame and how these feelings are related to each other. We randomly selected 8 autobiographical books by using different criterias. The foundation of this study was social constructionism, which is also a foundation for one of our analysis methods: discourse analyse. This analysis method was used for the analysis of the expressions that were made in an explicit way.

Att bli respektabel som tonårsmor - En kvalitativ studie av tonårsmödrar på Island

The purpose of this study is to examine how teenage mother in Iceland, who lives in the capital Reykjavík, perceive their situation. The research questions are:How do teenage mother`s perceive that their lives have changed since they became mothers?Perceive teenage mother some sorts of Shame, and if so, in what way?What is the process of teenage mothers to be respected?Qualitative semi structured interviews with 5 girls in the aged of 18-20, is used for analysis in this study. The girls have in common that they have had their child when they were between 15 and 19 years old. The interview were recorded on tape and then it was transcribed.

När skuldfällan slog igen: upplevelser av överskuldsättning och ekonomisk rådgivning

The purpose of this study was to examine how people experience being in debt, what they consider was the reason for being in debt and how they experienced economic counselling. The empirical data was based on five semi-structured interviews with people having experiences from being in debt and experiences of economic counselling. The data was analysed by using theoretical perspectives from a model called economic-Shame created by Bengt Starrin. The model shows how being in debt and the feelings of Shame influence health. The conclusion shows that the reasons for being in debt often is due to several sudden and tragic events happening at the same time or due to each other.

Abstract:Theoretical framework:  The Theory of Suffering by Katie Eriksson was used.Aim: The aim was to illuminate factors that influence women?s choice to seek care for urinary incontinence.Method: This literature review was based on a sample of nine qualitative and quantitative studies. Modified templates were used to assess the quality of the studies. Analysis of the results was done withmanifest content analysis.Findings: Findings made clear that the experience of Shame is a central factor for women not to seek treatment for their urinary incontinence UI. Women had to have severe loss of quality of life in order to seek help for their UI, and the loss of quality of life had to be subjectively larger than the feeling of Shame.

Upplevelser av skam och avvisande hos deprimerade unga vuxna

Depression in young adults is a serious condition causing serious suffering for the victim. By finding risk factors for depression the opportunity for early preventive action is increased, which, in turn, may prevent a negative course. Two risk factors which have been shown to be related to depression are Shame and rejection. Therefore this study examined the relationship between Shameproneness, rejection sensitivity, Shame-related events and depressive symptoms. The self-report questionnaires used were TOSCA, RSQ, Shaming index and BDI-II.
