This essay presents a picture of swedish Reggae listeners and how their love of music give meaning to their lives and unite them in a sub-culture. Based on interviews with six young men about their involvement in Reggae, it also investigates the relationship between music and identity, or more clearly; how identity is expressed through music. Furthermore, I discuss the notion of taste according to Bourdieu, and argue against his statement that taste in music affirms the class and social background of an individual. Results from my empirical data have indicated that Reggae music is difficult to associate to a distinct lifestyle, which inclines me to argue that it has managed to transcend phenomena such as ethnicity, class and cultural affiliation..

Soundclash is a phenomenon where groups within the culture of Reggae music ?battle? against each other, through strategies including both music and rhetoric. The social interaction in the clash exemplifies the scene hierarchy, in which the participants aim to position themselves as number one. This study includes empirical material from a competition within the Swedish scene, also distributed digitally via Internet sites. The analysis is based on discursive psychology, focusing on rhetoric and the construction of meaning.

Studiens syfte är att ta reda på hur och varför människors förhållningssätt till musik kan förändras vid det jag valt att kalla ?kontextbyten?. Kontextbyte avser när en person flyttar från den kulturella och sociala plats personen är uppvuxen på till Sverige. Empirin bygger på fyra kvalitativa intervjuer med personer som är uppväxta i Sovjetunionen/Ukraina, Mandinka/Senegal, Japan och Jamaica och nu bosatta i Sverige. De är alla på något sätt musicerande.
