How do Museums work with plurality in their organizations and in the production of exhibitions and other activities? This paper examines how civic Museums, provincial Museums and state Museums work with plurality from a perspective of culture policies, particularly in relation to the government bill Tid för kultur, issued by the Swedish government in 2009.All together I examine 25 Museums and their efforts to include marginalized groups in their activities and exhibitions. To do so I have studied four possible measures that are available for the Museums. This includes the following: projects that pay attention to a marginalized group or their living conditions; projects that are specifically created for a marginalized group; projects that include a marginalized group in the Museums preparations; and projects were Museums give full responsibility to a marginalized group. I have also examined how plurality have been presented ? as isolated cultures and cultural expressions or as hybrids and interchangeable phenomenons ? and to what extent the Museums are ready to involve marginalized groups in their physical environment and in their exhibition and activity programs.

The purpose of this essay is to look at how Museums design their activities as tourist destinations through the dissemination of history. In order to research this problem we have posed the following questions: How do Museums act in order to animate and interpret history? What does the future hold for the Museums? In order to find the answers to these questions we have made a deep-going analysis of the activities of four Museums, Nordiska Museet, Etnografiska Museet, Historiska Museet and Naturhistoriska Museet. These Museums have been analyzed by means of interviews, observations and the study of documents. Our theoretical perspective is informed by a hermeneutic perspective as well as Foucault´s definition of Museums as institutions, and the concept of storytelling.

This thesis is largely about Museums and their role and development in and for society. With a field/case study of the District Six Museum in Cape Town, we try to encapsulate a modern function for Museums within a context of 1) the current worldwide discussion on Museums and their future, and 2) the development of a new democratic nation in South Africa, and Museums possible role in that process. Through analysis of interviews made with concerned people within and outside the District Six museum weintend to get a picture of the views on this particular museum and its role and function, for its community and society at large, plus for other Museums, as a possible role model. We find that this museum might be close to a type of museum that has been asked for by museologists and others in recent times..

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how two separate Museums have realised the task of digitizing their collections, as well as to learn what options, possibilities and resources have been available to them during this process. Additionally, the aim here is to find how the two Museums have dealt with problems in connection to the digitization projects, since there are as-of-yet no established regulations or standards to guide them in their digitization efforts. However, national and international working groups seeking to establish better collaboration between archives, libraries and Museums ALM institutions have recently begun to formulate recommendations and suggested standards. Some of these recommendations have been used here as a theoretical framework in the examination of the two Museums. The research questions posed are: What options, possibilities and resources have been available to the Museums in their digitization projects, in terms of economy, staff, technical equipment and time?; For what purpose are the Museums digitizing their collections?; and How does their purpose influence the process and chosen procedures? Also discussed here is how the Museums relate to some of the existing recommendations.

The purpose with this paper is partly to find out what people of different ages do to learn more about the past, and partly what they believe will happen within the next 50 years with institutions like traditional Museums and the relatively new theme parks. How will the Museums and theme parks evolve? Will they evolve? Or will they disappear? To solve these questions I have sent out a questionnaire to people of different ages. I have also been in contact with employees from different Museums and theme parks in Skåne. I have used literature written by archaeologists among others.

Digitalisering av bilder vid två museer

The aim of this thesis is to describe digitization of images in two Swedish Museums. We want to examine their reasons to digitalize; the administrative and organizational aspects of their work and how they handle the problems of preservation and access to the digitalized images. These problems will be examined through our main questions: Why do the Museums choose to digitize their image collections? How are their work organized in terms of staff and economical matters? What kind of software do they use, and which technical solutions do they choose? Which preservation and access strategies for ensuring long-term preservation and access of the digital images do the Museums work with? How do the Museums select material for digitization? How do they handle the matter of discarding of materials? The study was conducted both by reading text material and interviewing personnel at the two Museums. The Museums? main reasons for digitization seem to be to protect fragile materials from deterioration and provide greater access to the collections.

Museums are a part of the cultural sector that over the last couple of years had to compete with the steadily growing consumption of spectacles. New techniques to attract and amaze the visitors have evolved. Living History Museums has developed a method to simulate past times by building up an environment with reconstructions. History is a non-definite science, there will never be an exact answer to how it really was, for example during the Middle Ages. This essay deals with the difference between reconstructions and authentic artefacts and how they build up an illusion of the past. In what sense does it matter if the artefacts are genuine or not? How do these Museums deal with anachronistic phenomena from today's modern world in the historic environment? Additionally I discuss whether or not these reconstructions - of environment, buildings and personal characters - have any influence on the historic narrative given by the museum.

This work is articulated around three research questions. These interrogate museum practice about collecting and collection management, what it looks like in the already gathered collections as well as the implications such work implies on a broader level. The theoretical framework throughout the paper is gender and LGBT studies as well as queer theory.
