Matpotatis är en livsmedelsråvara där den specifika vikten är direkt avgörande för kokegenskaperna och kvaliteten. På grund av varierande kokkvalitet hos Matpotatis blev vi kontaktade av Skånes Potatisodlarförening för att göra en dokumentation om hur odlarna bedriver sina Matpotatisodlingar och för att försöka hitta ett samband mellan odlingsåtgärder och kokkvalitet i Matpotatisen. Genom styrd bevattning, val av gödselmängder och jordmån är teorin att man kan påverka den specifika viktens utveckling under växtperioden och därmed kokkvaliteten.I projektet deltog 12 odlare, utspridda i hela Skåne, och en odlare i södra Halland. Projektet inleddes med att åka ut till alla odlarna och utföra en skriftlig dokumentation om hur odlingarna bedrivs och vilka strategier som odlarna hade inför säsongen. Under odlingssäsongen besöktes varje odlare en gång per vecka och prov togs ut för att bestämma den specifika vikten hos potatisen från olika delar av fälten.

This study investigated potato growing in beds as an alternative to conventional ridges.It was based on results from field trials on bed-grown potatoes carried out by Halland Rural Economy and Agricultural Society in 2007, studies of literature and interviews with farmers with experience of bed growing of potatoes. Due to their shallow root system, potatoes are one of the most drought-sensitive crops. Potatoes are often grown on sandy soils with poor water-holding capacity. Factors such as total yield, tuber size distribution and quality defects are negatively affected when water becomes insufficient. Wide beds have a more flat top which leads to more uniform water infiltration. Further on, beds have lower soil surface area due to its shape, and therefore, retain water more efficient. In the field trials, which were carried out at the Stjärnarp Estate near Halmstad, potatoes were grown in beds alongside a conventional ridge-grown crop.

Idag ställs stora krav på Matpotatisen utseende. Att förbättra skalfinishen är många gånger önskvärt för Matpotatisodlaren. En försämring av skalfastheten hos etablerade Matpotatissorter har uppmärksammats av Lars Bolin, VD på Svensk Potatis. Genom att undersöka praktisk odling och därigenom samla in underlag för slutsatser alternativt för framtida studier inom området är förhoppningen att minska problem med skalhållfasthet. Målsättningen är att hitta metoder som ger potatisen ett bra hållfast skal vilket skulle öka lönsamheten för odlarna.

However, it is difficult to determine when to stop the growth. Specific gravity can easily be measured and can sometimes be used as a tool for estimating the boiling properties. This report discusses different aspects of the specific gravity of the potato and how it can be used as a tool to determine the appropriate time for vine killing.
