Kriminalvårdares föreställningar om äldre interner och deras omsorgsbehov - en kvalitativ studie

According to the statistics, the number of older Inmates in prison is increasing, and the care needs for this group are relatively unexplored. The purpose was to study prison officer?s perceptions of older Inmates and their care needs. The study was based on a qualitative approach in which prison officers at one prison were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed based on earlier research and from a social constructionist perspective.

Prisons are for many an unknown world, and few know about the prison culture which includes unwritten rules, power structures, interactions and relationships between Inmates and correctional employees.While many think that Swedish prisons are too comfortable,Inmates are facing extreme stress due to surveillance and detention, by depriving Inmates their possibility to shape their own lives. When the Inmates is deprived of control over their own life?s the penal system have great power to shape and to influence the Inmates.The purpose of this paper is to investigate prisoners' experiences of treatment and exercise of power in prisons. Starting point is to examine what are the kinds of relationships between prison officers and Inmates from a power perspective, if there is any difference between the closed and open prisons and how the Inmates affected by the structures that exist.Based on my overall purpose, and with my informant´s stories which revealed a number of similar points, four main headings were developed; Mass media and society´s view, and unknown world, interaction between Inmates and prison officers and consequences.Prison officers with the role as a contact persons as well and other staff which work close to the Inmates play a significant role by supporting through motivational interviewing and can help the Inmates to gain insight about their life situation and actions. My informant?s underlined that a good contact person can either help or discourage.Inmates who contributed with their experiences express that there is a big difference between open-and closed prisons.

Fina och fula brott : en intervjustudie om intagnas hierarkier på anstalt i ett genusperspektiv

The essay deals with hierarchies that occurs between Inmates in prison. It deals with a theory that these hierarchies, when seen through a gender perspective, can be understood as a hierarchy where you are valued based on traditional male characteristics. Empirically, the paper consists of interviews with five Inmates, or former Inmates, who during a period in his life, has served a prison sentence at a closed institution. Based on the informants' statements, conclusions are drawn about which properties are valued low in the hierarchy. This becomes clear when the informants speak humiliating about sexually deviant groups, snitches, or sex offenders.

Information innanför murarna- en studie av fängelsebibliotekariers uppfattningar om informationsförmedling till interner

The aim of this study is to investigate variations of conceptions among prison librarians, concerning mediation of information from an ethical perspective. We have performed interviews with nine librarians and used the phenomenographic approach when analyzing the material. Sixteen categories of conceptions were found, distributed on four aspects of the phenomenon, the act of mediating information to Inmates. The results show a variety of conceptions among the librarians. The four aspects cover conceptions about the Inmates as users of the library services in prisons, conceptions about the information need of the Inmates, conceptions concerning policies, guidelines and laws and conceptions about information access in the prisons.

The purpose of this essay is to widen the perspective on Inmates serving capital sentences by analyzing their final statements. The focus of this essay was centered on acute anxiety of death among Inmates, visible in their final statements, as a result of an accelerated process of dying.

Hur stor skulle världen vara om jag inte kunde läsa: En studie av kvinnliga interners läsning vid anstalten Hinseberg

The object of this thesis is to direct attention onto female Inmates who is a disregarded user group within the discipline of library and information sciences. This study has been performed on location at the Hinseberg correctional institution where nine female criminal offenders constitute the empirical foundation of our inquiry. The question proposed for solution is as follows: Is there a correlation between socio-cultural prerequisites and the reading habits of the female Inmates - and if so how can it be described? Among the conclusions that we have drawn from our study is that the socio-cultural environment has an influence on the well-being of the Inmates which in its turn has an impact on their reading. However, the effects on their mental state vary and consequently so does also their reading.

From a development psychology point of view, questions relating to childhood ang growth are some of the important subjects we choose to discuss. Our purpose is also to reveal the linkage between criminal behavior and different theories of the above mentioned perspective. To bridge the gap between the general and the individual, our survey was based on profound interviews with four Inmates in prison. This offer an opportunity to capture the individual´s inner thoughts, feelings and experience about the criminal action.

Bakom dubbla murar : en sociologisk undersökning av klosterverksamheten vid Kumlaanstalten

In the prison of Kumla, Sweden`s highest security classified institution, spiritual retreats are pursued since 2001. The aim is to offer the Inmates a possibility to enter deeply into spiritual contemplation. This spiritual contemplation is made possible through the fact that the prisoners carry out a retreat designed after guidelines written by Ignatius of Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises. The purpose of this examination is to study how ordinary institutional life in comparison to monastic life defines and creates different attitudes and roles amongst the Inmates. A secondary aim is to describe the consequences of the retreat on individual basis.

Svikna löften? : Fem unga män på en anstalt i Sverige och deras upplevelse av sin egen skolgång.

This study is about Inmates, who reflect upon their time in school, their experiences of school and how different things have influenced and affect them later in life. The aim with this study is to examine how different kinds of school related issues have affected the Inmates in different ways. The aim is also to look at how school can spot in early years, children within the danger zone and provide for those children, so that they can be helped in different ways and so that they can be able to achieve different in life, not to end up becoming criminals later in life.The main questions in this study are:How did the chosen Inmates experience their time in school?Can you by looking at research tell that these persons already in their childhood were children within the danger zone?What kind of school related issues could have contributed to a criminal lifestyle later in life?The result of this study shows that all five have been children within the danger zone. In all five cases there have been school related issues that have affected those men.

Att fånga känslor : Om kriminalvårdares emotionella arbete inom häkten

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to explore how prison officers in Sweden manage their feelings in remand prisons versus Inmates and colleagues. Due to changes in the prison officers occupational role and work environment we found it profoundly interesting to study how prison officers perceive and reflect on their emotion management, that relates to the work they perform. The prison officers occupational role includes tasks that corresponds with security work and rehabilitative labor towards Inmates, this tend to create a complexity as the occupational role consists of contradictive tasks. They need to uphold safety by physical means simultaneously as they need to become more intimate with Inmates to accomplish the rehabilitative tasks. The study proceeds with a qualitative inquiry with six interviews from three different remand prisons around Sweden.

Förändring eller förvaring bakom murarna? En intervjustudie om intagnas upplevelser av kriminalvårdspersonal

This paper presents an investigation into the relationship between Inmates and staff in a high security prison in Sweden. The primary objectives are to investigate this relationship from an inmate perspective and to identify key factors that may promote or hinder rehabilitative interaction with staff. Empirical data utilized in this study consist of semi-structured interviews carried out by the authors with nine Inmates currently in custody of the treatment facility within the prison and six Inmates housed within the study facility. This data collection method is an extension of grounded theory and four key themes were generated from the data analysis. The first of these examines the effect of rule enforcement on prison atmosphere and subsequent staff/inmate relations.
