Mangroveskogar stabiliserar kustområden och de för lokalbefolkningen heliga Kaya-skogarna i södra Kenya erbjuder ett kulturellt värde. Den stora befolkningen som lever i området gör att mänsklig påverkan utgör ett betydande hot mot regionens biologiska mångfald. Det största hotet utgör det växande jordbruket som ska försörja en allt större befolkning.

Allteftersom priserna på de fossila bränslena ökar stiger även efterfrågan på förnyelsebart bränsle. ELKV planerar att bygga ett kraftvärmeverk som kommer att eldas med flis, returträd, torv och halm. Eldning av halm för värme och el kommer att öka i Sverige. I vårt grannland Danmark har man under många år använt sig av halm för att producera värme och el.I detta arbete har olika former av lagringssystem för halm studerats för att försöka komma fram till det effektivaste systemet för ELKV. Tidigare, innan detta arbete presenterats, fanns det mycket lite information om olika kostnader för lagring, så har det varit en av hörnstenarna i detta arbete.Halmen kan lagras på många olika sätt.
