The aim of this thesis is to study through discourse analysis how users talk about librarians and the librarian profession and what perceptions they have regarding it. I have tried to do this by asking the questions: How do the users describe librarians and the librarian profession? Are there any patterns in what they say? The method and theory I have used is Laclau and Mouffes? discourse theory and partially structured interviews. The material consists of interviews with eight users that are both women and men, both students and members of the public and they were between 25 and 50 years old. In the material I found two discourses: the discourse about librarians and the discourse about the librarian profession.

The purpose of this study is to examine and compare librarian profession with different professional theories. The intention is to describe how the librarian profession meets the different professional criteria and to what extent the librarian profession can be said to be professional in expertise, service and autonomy. Nolin?s modern theory provides an opportunity to analyze occupational groups based on professionalized basic concepts. The analysis of relevant material showed that the librarian is a service profession with high skills, but does not hold a high degree of autonomy.

This master thesis concerns the relationship the librarianhas to the libraries classification system. The system itselfis made by librarians for librarians and is only used bylibrarians. This raises the question of how the librariansrelate to their own system to create order. The empiricalmaterial consists of five in-depth interviews with librarians.Two theoretical approaches were used in the analysis of thematerial with one focus on the librarian?s professional rolland the other on the postmodern theories about humansneed for order.

The aim of this thesis is to explore the job satisfaction of librarians and try to nuance stereotypes, which the public has and which still exist in massmedia concerning librarians and their work. The study is qualitative and based mainly on semistructured interviews with ten libraries born between 1937s and 1973s of which eight are women and two men. Furthermore, I have divided them into two groups according to age in order to see if there are differencies between the older and the younger concerning job satisfaction. In addition, I have used participant observation to some extent. My assumption is that job satisfaction is effected both by individual factors and environmental factors at work.

The aim of this study is to examine whether the image of the stereotype librarian has created conflict in young librarians´ personal identity and/or professional identity and if this has shown in their choice of clothes? Our purpose was to find out, with the help of their choice of clothes, the young librarians view of themselves as individuals and professional librarians. We have searched for the answers to the following questions: - Do young librarians experience that clothing at their workplace has any significance and if so, what do they want to signal with their clothing? - Do they experience that clothing and appearance has any impact on their personal and professional identity? - How do they relate, by their choice of clothes, to the stereotype images of the librarian? We have performed qualitative interviews with eleven young female librarians. As a theoretical framework we have used ideas and concepts from different areas of research; semiotics, social psychology, business administration and ethnology.

The aim of this bachelor?s thesis is to investigate what role the public library in Sweden may have when it comes to gender equality issues. The questions at issue that were asked, in order to give an answer to the aim, was how the librarians defined and saw work with equality, how much the steering documents for the library impact and what they are doing in their practice to weaken the dichotomies between the sexes. The theoretical starting point used for this study is three concepts, the gender system, the stereotypes and the gender contract described by the Swedish historian Yvonne Hirdman. The purpose of the three concepts is that gender is a social construction which produces gender stereotypes and a gender order in society, which the library is a part of.

Sammanfattning: Hur identifierar en individ sig utifrån sitt arbete? Vilken betydelse har kön för yrkesidentiteten? Syftet med denna antologi är att belysa relationen mellan yrkesidentitet och genus utifrån våra informanters uppfattningar om deras yrkestillhörigheter och vad de har för betydelse i deras liv. Teorier om genus, arbete och identitet samt våra etiska reflektioner kring våra respektive fält kommer att beröras. Den analysmetod, Grounded Theory som vi arbetat med för att bearbeta vårt material är också presenterad.Jenny Nilsson ger en inblick i värnpliktigas uppfattningar av försvarsmaktens villkor och dess inflytande på individernas identitetsskapande. Strukturen inom militären är traditionellt mansdominerad, vilken betydelse kan detta ha?Emilie Larsson behandlar yrket förskolelärare, med fokus på minoriteten män.

Kompetens inom informationsteknologi är någonting som är av stor vikt i Bibliotekarieyrket. Kunskapen är till stor del beroende av hur information om mindre och kontinuerliga uppdateringar och förändringar inom hårdvara och mjukvara nårpersonal i informationsdisk. Den här utvärderingen har utgått från tre huvudsakliga frågeställningar: [1] Hur når information om uppdateringar i mjukvara personalen i informationsdisken? [2] Hur når information om uppdateringar i hårdvara personalen i informationsdisken? [3] Hur ser personalen i informationsdisken och de ansvariga pådessa tillvägagångssätt och kan förbättringar göras? Intervjuer har gjorts med tre bibliotekarier och tre ansvariga inom IT-området.Utvärderingen visar att samtliga intervjuade bibliotekarier efterfrågar mer information kring förändringar i IT. En del i detta är ett behov av att ha tillgång till en IT-tekniker i huset i högre grad än vad som erbjuds för närvarande.
