Total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) - Monitoring of organic pollutants in wastewater

Total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) are two methods used for measuring organic pollutants in wastewater. Both methods are widely used but the COD method results in production of hazardous wastes, including mercury. The purpose of this study was to validate the method TOC that will replace COD and find a factor to convert TOC to COD. In this study 26 samples were analyzed from four sewage treatment plant in the municipality of Enköping. The results show that the COD method could be replaced by the TOC method. The factor for COD/TOC was between 3.1 - 3.3. Both methods will be used in parallel until 2013 when it will be forbidden to use the COD analysis..

Den planerade undervisningen om det finska kriget : En studie av hur gymnasielärare i Västerbotten och Österbotten planerar att undervisa om det finska kriget 1808-09

The study includes written interviews with nine teachers in Västerbotten and eight teachers in Österbotten, who have answered questions concerning school policy documents, content and didactic methods. The purpose has been to examine whether there is a difference in historical culture in how the war is treated in the two regions. Historical culture is here meant within the prospective history lesson, where the pupils encounter history within certain boundaries. The result of the interview study shows that there are differences in structure concerning the school policy documents, but that these differences on the whole are compensated by the widespread interest in the Finnish War by the teachers in both regions. The differences in historical culture can be found within the construction of the content when it comes to the aftermaths of the war as well as the purpose of the teaching.

Evaluation of ELISA and rapid test for the analysis of fecal Calprotectin

ABSTRACTBackground Calprotectin is a protein found in the cytoplasm of neutrophile granulocytes. In the course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), calprotectin is released during chronic inflammation in the gut. Activation of neutrophils during the inflammation is followed by activation and secretion of pro-inflammatory molecules such as calprotectin. Calprotectin is stable in stool up to 7 days and can therefore be used as a non-invasive marker for diagnosis, treatment and measurement of the disease activity in patients with IBD. The most common method for analysis of calprotectin concentration is ELISA.

A targeted evaluation of OpenEye?s methods for virtual ligand screens and docking

The process of drug discovery is very slow and expensive. There is a need for reliable in silico methods; however the performance of these methods differs. This work presents a targeted study on how the drug discovery methods used in OpenEye?s tools ROCS, EON and FRED perform on targets with small ligands. It was examined if 12 compounds (markers) somewhat similar to AMP could be detected by ROCS in a random data set comprised of 1000 compounds. It was also examined if EON could find any electrostatic similarities between the queries and the markers.

Hur lägger lärarna upp matematikundervisningen i förberedelseklassen? : En studie om lärarnas upplevelser, arbetssätt och svårigheter de möter i förberedelseklassen

National Agency for Education for the results of national sample results show that students with another mother tongue than Swedish have low results with a larger percentage than majority students. Research shows that this depends on their mother tongue and the importance of language in the subject to learn. The purpose of this study was to examine how teachers experience, plan and implement their teaching field of mathematics in the preparatory class. The newly arrived pupils in the preparatory class come from different parts of the world which leads to an intercultural classroom being formed. The aim of the social perspective is understand how students integrate into the social in the classroom.I use qualitative methods through interviews.

Könsskillnader i upplevelse och användande av socialt stöd på arbetsplatsen

This study examines gender differences in the perception and utilization of social support in traditional female- and male workplaces. This study confirms results from earlier studies which suggest that there are gender differences. The survey instrument measures four types of social support: informational, instrumental, appraisal and emotional among 314 working women and men. Women report higher levels of social support on all four types. There is a significant difference in instrumental support between women working in female dominated workplaces compared to men working in male-dominated workplaces and between some of the trades.

Undersökning av mätsystem och regulatorstrukturer för industriella tillämpningar

This thesis is divided in to two different parts. The first part includes examination of the measurementsystem of an industrial robot using a resolver sensor. The main focus is on methods for suppressing noise in the angularvelocity signal without increasing timedelay. Five different methods are investigated. Three of these are based on oversampling: burstsamplingmethod, meanvaluemethod and correlationmethod.

Flödesmätning i vattenkraftverk : Studie av alternativa mätmetoder

Flow measurement is one of the greatest challenges in order to calculate efficiency in hydropower. Most hydropower plants in Sweden use differential pressure methods for flow measurement. These methods are dependent on constant conditions in the waterways. A change in these conditions, like turbine improvements, prevents differential pressure methods to verify efficiency improvements. Since efficiency improvements can?t be verified by one measurement system, another method, which isn?t affected by changing conditions, can be used.

En analys av Hosni Mubaraks sista tal som Egyptens president

On the 10th of February 2011 Hosni Mubarak gave his last speech as the president of Egypt, on the following day he resigned the presidency after more then two weeks of violent protests against his rule, and with that his 30-year long rule over Egypt had come to an end. This bachelor thesis aims towards examining this speech using both qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to reach a useful analysis of the speech. The conclusions of this thesis is that several methods were used in the speech in order to win the listeners acceptance and approval for the speaker, and then to use these in order to soothe, or preferably to completely stop, the current revolution. The methods that have been found to play major roles in achieving this are; portraying the speaker, defining the listener, promises of improvements and of justice/revenge, and nationalism.
