Chalmers University of Technology today have numerous computers which are never powereddown, at the same time there is a need for more computation power for researchers.Hence, we have investigated the possibility to use the computers for computing power andsecondly, if there is no work to be done, to put them into power saving mode.We have made a thorough study where we compared different distributing systems andin the end HTCondor was chosen as the best to implement. HTCondor is an excellent systemfor opportunistic use of computing power, i.e. make use of computers that no one elseis currently using. The system is used at several universities around the world with goodresults and would be excellent at Chalmers, where there is a need for such a system.Our implementation shows that HTCondor is well capable of handling unused computingpower. HTCondor can handle most file types that may be run on the system.

The purpose of this study is to examine how risk is perceived by the urban architect's in the region Dalarna, as well as how this is reflected in their everyday work with risk and decision- making according to urban planning. The ambition is also to show how their risk awareness could be improved. The study is written in cooperation with Länsstyrelsen Dalarna as a part of their regional long-term goal to improve the region's proactive risk' and crisis management. The study is based upon 12 semi-structured interviews with local urban architects conducted during the summer and autumn 2007. The result shows that some architects are motivated for working with risk and think that risk awareness should be integrated in their everyday work, while others are not motivated and think that risk is more of a passing trend.

Cloud computing has become a very publicized and popular concept in recent years, both in business literature and research, where data ownership is the security aspect which has usually been ranked the highest of the disadvantages that can be identified with cloud services. Today there is a lack of research on information ownership from an informatics perspective, as it is most often discussed from a legal perspective.In our study we interviewed six different companies that use cloud services, on which attitudes and reasoning they had on their information ownership. We compared these attitudes with the attitudes we identified in business literature and research on the subject. In business literature we found four recurring themes which were very clear about how a company should govern information ownership.Overall the results of our interviews showed that there is widespread ignorance at the companies on how information ownership in the cloud is regulated between the company and the cloud provider. All companies expressed that they had not experienced any change in ownership when they placed their data in the cloud, and they expressed no major concerns about how the ownership was handled.

Outdoor recreation habits in metropolis and rural areasThis study aims to examine the perception of nature and outdoor recreation habits from an urban-rural prospective. The urbanization process continues in Sweden and the populations of the cities are growing continuously. Trends to build more compact and ?climate smart? reigns and with this a risk that green areas and areas where outdoor recreation can be practiced are situated further and further away from the urban population. Analyzing the responses from a survey made by the research program Friluftsliv i förändring 2007 we have examined if and which differences exists between urban and rural areas regarding their perception of nature, outdoor recreation habits and factors influencing the practice of outdoor recreation.

Cloud computing innebär att datorkraft och IT-resurser i form av servrar, lagring och lokala nätverk görs tillgängliga via internet, cloud computing har ökat snabbt i användning de senaste åren. Möjligheterna med molntjänster har lett till nya utmaningar avseende tillit till molntjänster genom att öppna för helt nya förhållanden mellan leverantör och kund. I dagsläget så är tillit till molntjänsterna ett stort problem för kunder såsom mikroföretag samt små och medelstora företag.Vårt examensarbete syftar till att beskriva mikroföretags samt små och medelstora företags tillit och misstro till molntjänster, samt identifiera vilka kriterier som bidrar till detta. Resultatet visar att det är svårt att tydligt definiera tillit och misstro hos företag, då deras situationer och verksamheter skiljer sig. Tack vare vår litteraturstudie i kombination med våra intervjuer har vi skapat oss en bra bild av vilka kriterier som bidrar med tillit och misstro till molntjänster.

Kommunikation och tillgänglighet som målMitt program består av fem hus,630 kv var,studentsbostäder 541 kv och ett kontors komplex,komplexet är i samma byggnad som t-bana hus. Alla hus är på parken, på grund av ljusförhållande,eftersom programmet är orienterad mot söder.För att komma till bostäder går man genom trappor,det finns fem nya trappor från gatan till bostäderna som har som funktion,förutom att nå bostäder,att göra möjligt till alla grannar att gå till parken från gatan själv.Programmet har också för mål att skapa ett mera dynamiskt urban liv med sitt multifunktionella grannskap,väl dimensionerad hus och anslutna ytor,varierande boende av alla åldrar,och utveckla ett mera aktiv förhållande till parken och med de nya bosättare.

Trees in urban environment are exposed to extreme conditions, foremost the ones that grow in the hard packed soil along our streets. They are also exposed to damaging insects and fungal diseases both local and new ones spreading from South Europe. The global warming with warmer temperatures provides a longer growing season, making it easier for insects and fungus to establish a habitat. Based on these facts new tree species need to be available for future urban plantings.To determine what these trees would be an interview study began. Six people were selected who have experience in the field of urban environment planting.

Insufficient intake of vegetables is a reason for micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition in developing countries. With urbanization, globalization and a growing world population it is of major importance to secure sufficient food supply for the world?s population. Part of the solution to increased food security among the world?s poor could be the introduction of vegetable home gardens, plots for small scale vegetable production which can provide households with sufficient vegetables as well as serve as an extra income source. Molnapplikationer som DropBox har under de senaste åren blivit allt mer populära ocherbjuder anställda möjligheten att kunna kommunicera och dela filer mellan varandra.För att få en förståelse för hur icke-sanktionerade molnapplikationer användspåbörjades en undersökning för att identifiera risker och möjligheter för svenskaorganisationer.Denna uppsats genomfördes med en kvalitativ ansats och inleddes med enlitteraturstudie som följdes av nio stycken intervjuer med personer som har erfarenhetav IT-infrastruktur och Cloud Computing. Resultatet indikerade att IT är intressant förorganisationer där man önskar ha en bättre kontroll över kostnader och resurser samtkunna förändra vid behov. Om organisationer inte implementerar en policy för huricke-sanktionerade molnapplikationer ska hanteras kan anställda välja att skapa sinaegna regler och att man därför tappar kontrollen över data.Genom att analysera och se över sina nuvarande behov kan organisationer behållakontrollen över data, samtidigt som man undviker att det blir dyrare och kan minskakostnader samt skala sina resurser beroende på behov.Exempelvis kan framtida forskning vara att man undersöker hur användningsscenariotser ut på arbetsplatsen kontra hemma och vad det är för typ av resurser som behövsinom organisationen..

Context: During the 21st century several alarming reports have been published that deals with the depletion and pollutant of the earth by human interference. The earth is an ending resource and so are the mountains and bedrocks which are continuously mined in order to harvest its minerals. The idea behind Urban Mining is to (re)invent processes enabling further purpose for materials both from old deposits and new products providing secondary raw materials and energy. This thesis aims to investigate the challenges and opportunities of how firms and organizations can and will be able to strike a better balance between product-/service systems, economic growth and environmental stewardship in the context of Urban Mining as an approach. With the innovation of processes, technology, business- planning and creation in focus.Objective: How to future proof a business model for Urban Mining by the usage of business model design.Method: This thesis will be conducted using a case study approach, meaning that it will incorporate qualitative, exploratory and descriptive characteristics - aiming towards enabling both applied and fundamental research.Results: The result evaluates the business model element differences between traditional C&D industry and Urban Mining industry.

Previous studies of stress and coping regarding urban bus drivers describe an unhealthy occupation in areas of psychological and physiological factors. In the present study a social constructionist approach was used to investigate Swedish urban bus drivers' constructs of stress and coping regarding passengers. Semi-structered interviews were performed with ten bus drivers, nine males and one female. The data was transcribed verbatim and analysed with the program QSR NUD*IST.Three main themes where found; passanger related context, coping strategies and promoting circumstances. The bus drivers' constructs describe passanger relations as part of a stressful work environment where successful coping is problematic..

This thesis aim to investigate the living conditions among marginalized habitants of suburbs in the Swedish welfare state. To approach an understanding of the complexity of marginalized urban areas, this thesis focus on studying the Stockholm suburb Husby in a context of the May riots 2013.The research method used is qualitative interviews with seven informants, who have a connection to the Husby area.The theories applied to the empirical material is Gösta Esping-Andersens theory on welfare state regimes and Loïc Wacquants theory on advanced marginality, also known as ?The new urban poverty?.By observing the complexity of the Husby riots in a contextual aspect of the Swedish welfare state and the living situation in Husby, the analysis has shown that the Swedish welfare model is going through a changing process. This process means a shift from a social democratic welfare model towards a more liberal regime, with an increased privatization of public welfare and a focus on individual responsibility regarding the citizens own living conditions. Husby as an area is characterized by a low socioeconomic status, a high level of unemployment and poor school results.

Urban operations is one of the most difficult challenges a modern army can be tasked with. These challenges have been studied in history and present with various perspectives, but rarely from a combat engineering point of view. The purpose of this thesis has been to study the urban capabilities of a Swedish combat engineer company by examining if it can perform similar combat engineering fieldwork that supported the basic capabilities mobility, defence and effect in Operation AL FAJR, Fallujah Iraq 2004. These are the capabilities a Swedish engineer company are primarily designed to support in urban operations.For example, the study of Operation AL FAJR has shown that fieldwork supported mobility with breaching minefields, obstacles, walls and doors. Studien syftar till att undersöka hur översiktsplaner har påverkats av entrepreneurial city, platsmarknadsföring och kreativa klassen som alla är olika teorier om urban tillväxt.
