The infection could act in synergism with other infections such as Corona virus to create a poorer welfare and productivity in cattle. Studies have shown that a diagnosis can be made with both the Baermann method and with an ELISA. In Norway diagnosis of BVDV on a herd level is attained through pooled serum samples. The question was raised whether pooled serum samples could be used in a similar fashion to attain status on a herd level for lungworm.

Serum thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) activity is used as a tumor marker in disease monitoring in veterinary and human medicine. TK1, an intracellular enzyme, is involved in a salvage pathway of DNA precursor synthesis. TK1 is used in DNA precursor production by catalyzing the transfer of the gamma-phosphate-group from a phosphate-donor to the 5?- hydroxyl-group of thymidine forming thymidine-monophosphate. Nucleoside monophosphosphates are finally converted into thymidine-triphosphates. TK1 activity significantly rises in the G1 and the S phase of the cell cycle.

Joint injury (inflammation) or osteoarthritis is the most common cause of poor performance in the athletic horse. Osteoarthritis is the ensuing degeneration of joint cartilage due to inflammation/injury. The single most important factor in the inflammation cascade of joint injuries is interleukin-1 (IL-1). Until recently, these injuries have been treated with products like hyaluronic acid, cortisone and polysulphated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAG). Several studies have not been able to demonstrate a significant difference in the clinical improvement of joint injuries treated with hyaluronic acid or PSGAG and saline.

Detta arbete syftade till att validera en metod för analys av interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1 RA) i plasma från häst. Med en fungerande analysmetod finns möjligheten att använda IL-1 RA som biomarkör för antiinflammatoriska effekter av läkemedel exempelvis dexametason. En kommersiell ELISA framtagen för analys av IL-1 RA hos häst användes vid valideringen. Analysmetoden var tidigare endast validerad för analys av IL-1 RA i spädningsmedium från tillverkaren. Vid validering av metoden framställdes standardkurvor i spädningsmedium från tillverkaren (reagent diluent=RD) samt i olika biologiska medier från häst. Beräkning av standardkurvorna utfördes med hjälp av linjär regression och innefattade intervallet 0,313 ? 20 ng/mL.

Forskning visar att prokain kan vara orsaken till majoriteten av biverkningar, vilket gör att bensylpenicillin utan prokain kan bli aktuellt att använda för att minska risken för biverkningar och öka djurvälfärden. Att byta antibiotika till trimetoprim i kombination med sulfonamid är ej önskvärt då det antibakteriella spektrat då vidgas.

The calcium homeostasis in the body is normally strict regulated to be kept within very narrow limits. This regulation is due to the action of parathyroid hormone (PTH) which is synthesized in the chief cells of the parathyroid glands. In different diseases, the calcium homeostasis is disturbed and this could either be due to a dysfunction of the parathyroid gland itself, or it could have a completely different explanation. To investigate disturbed calciumhomeostasis, ionized calcium and PTH can be analyzed from a blood sample. There are a lot of different assays to measure PTH in humans.

Ställandet av diagnosen OA kommer ofta för sent så att irreversibla ledskador redan hunnit uppstå vilket gör det av yttersta betydelse att förbättra diagnostiken inom området. OA kan uppstå på flera olika sätt; akut trauma mot leden, intraartikulära frakturer, repetitivt trauma, skada på mjukdelar som orsakar en instabilitet i leden med flera. Förenklat kan OA orsakas till följd av en normal belastning på en onormal led eller onormal belastning på en normal led. Oavsett orsak ses skador på ledbrosket och beroende på hur utvecklad OA är kan röntgenförändringar ses, vilka avspeglar ett dåligt broskstatus.
