The aim of the study was to investigate whether the sedation method had an effect on the screening result for hip dysplasia (HD). Another aspect considered was if the dog?s weight had an impact on the results. This study was a follow up on the results from an earlier study of sedation routines in Swedish dogs. The breeds included in this study were the same as in the earlier one; German shepherd, Bernese mountain dog, Boxer, Newfoundland, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, Golden and Labrador Retriever.

The aim of the study was to examine the retinal ON- and OFF-pathways of the canine electroretinogram (ERG). The ON- and OFF-pathways are used to distinguish objects from their backgrounds. A dark object is discernible from a lighter background using the OFFpathway and the ON-pathway is used to descry a light object upon a darker background. This study shows that the dog ERG has both ON- and OFF-responses and that these responses can be separated by prolonging the flash duration over 50 ms. The dog OFF-response waveform was more similar to the cat OFF-response than the human OFF-response (Frishman, 2006; Zrenner and Gouras, 1979). In this study six female three-year-old Beagle dogs were included. Both background and flash stimuli were provided by LEDs (light emitting diodes) with a wavelength of 470 nm, a wavelength that is absorbed almost as effectively by the canine M/L-cones as by the S-cones. These stimuli gave ERGs with both ON- and OFF-responses.

The natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) is one of three species of toads living in Sweden. During the last decades declines in population numbers have been detected and are thought to be primarily due to loss of habitat, overgrown breeding ponds and competition from common toad (Bufo bufo) and common frog (Rana temporaria). In 2012 20 ponds in the location of Glommeskallen in Smögen were restored by clearing the ponds from overgrowth. The aim of this study was to investigate if natterjack toads used the restored ponds and if the restoration had made an impact on the natterjack population on the location. Presence of common toad and common frog was recorded, as was the presence of eggs and larvae of any of the three species.

Numerous dogs are stressed during a stay at a veterinary clinic. Stress has an impact physically as well as mentally, and may influence animal care. There are different ways to prevent and handle animal stress. Dog Appeasing Pheromones (DAP) is sometimes used to reduce stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential need for stressreducers, explore the use of DAP and evaluate pheromonatherapy for dogs as a potential stressreducer within veterinary health care.

Få läkemedel har visat god effekt vid lindring av neuropatisk smärta och denna typ av smärtlindring är därför fortfarande en stor utmaning. Inom humanmedicinen har dock ett läkemedel innehållande gabapentin uppvisat god effekt vid smärta av denna karaktär. Gabapentin finns ej godkänt till behandling av djur men används allt mer inom veterinärmedicinen. Läkemedlet skulle kunna innebära lindring vid annars svårbehandlade tillstånd. Det är därför av intresse att granska den veterinärmedicinska evidens som ligger till grund för behandling med gabapentin vid tillstånd karaktäriserade av neuropatisk smärta.

Syfte Genom att undersöka hur rekryterare bedömer personlig kompetens vid rekrytering av personalvetare syftar uppsatsen till att bidra med ökad kunskap och förståelse för hur personlig kompetens bedöms och vilka tänkbara konsekvenser dylika bedömningar kan leda till.Teori/Tidigare forskning Den teoretiska utgångspunkten tas i teori kring kompetens och rekrytering i allmänhet och forskning kring bedömning i synnerhet. Fokus läggs på utmaningar och konsekvenser av bedömning av personlig kompetens.Metod Ett kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt tillämpades och empirin insamlades i huvudsak genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med rekryterare. Genom färgkodning kategoriserades resultatet och analyserades och diskuterades utifrån teori och forskning.Resultat Studien visar att såväl personlig som formell kompetens värdesätts i rekryteringsprocessen. När de formella kompetenserna visat sig uppfyllda flyttas fokus mot kandidaternas personliga kompetens. Vid bedömningen används i huvudsak traditionella urvalsinstrument såsom granskning av CV och betyg, anställningsintervju, olika typer av tester samt referenstagning.

?Tollarsjuka? is a disease with a suspected immunopathological background seen in Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers. Pyrexia, lameness, stiffness and joint- or musclepain are typical clinical signs. The purpose of this study is to describe case histories from dogs with a possible evidence of ?tollarsjuka?. 18 private dogs were included in this report. Generalised stiffness, lameness and fatigue were the most frequent manifestations of the disease.

Therefore, a literature study on pain, pain-scales and functionaltest was performed together a pilot study on a functional test.The aim of the present pilot-study was to investigate a functional test, "Bioarth functionalevaluation scale", used in veterinary medicine.

Surrogacy is an arrangement in which a woman carries, delivers, and then relinquishes a baby to commissioning parents. The arrangement challenges traditional norms and definitions of reproduction, pregnancy and motherhood, and at the same time raises difficult ethical, philosophical and social questions. There is currently an ongoing debate in Sweden, where all forms of surrogacy is illegal. The debate is polemical and harsh, with advocates arguing that surrogacy is defensible on the basis of individual rights and women's right to choose over their own bodies, and those in opposition are convinced on an intersectional basis that women are being used and exposed on the market of surrogacy.The purpose of this study is to investigate the debate on surrogacy in the Swedish context. Using qualitative text analysis, the study aims to increase understanding about the debate over surrogacy by analyzing texts published in Swedish press during 2010-2013.

Uppsatsen analyserar huruvida rekryterings- och befordringsförfaranden som tillämpas inom ett logistik- och postföretag har betydelse för könsfördelningen på olika befattningsnivåer. Studiens frågeställningar är: Vilka rekryteringsförfaranden tillämpas inom organisationen? Kan rekryteringsförfaranden förklara hur en könsfördelning skapas och återskapas, i så fall på vilket sätt? De teoretiska utgångspunkterna behandlar i huvudsak utbuds- och efterfrågerelaterade förklaringar, samt olika rekryteringspraxis.Avsikten var att genom en jämförande fallstudie, mellan kontor med jämn respektive ojämn könsfördelning, analysera huruvida rekryterings- och befordringsförfarande kan förklara en ojämn könsfördelning.  Empirin inhämtades genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med fyra enhetschefer och två regionchefer. Följaktligen analyserades materialet genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultaten tyder på att användning av informella informationskanaler, exempelvis rekommendationer, kan leda till skapande av en ojämn könsfördelning.

Gränsdragningen mellan närings- och hobbyverksamhet är särskilt svår i hästverk-samheter där det nästan alltid finns ett inslag av personligt nöje i utövandet. En verk-samhet ska bedrivas yrkesmässigt, självständigt och med ett vinstsyfte för att uppfyl-la näringskriterierna i 13 kap. 1 § IL. Är kraven på näringsverksamhet inte uppfyllda så kan verksamheten istället beskattas som hobby. Det räcker oftast inte att hästverk-samheten bedrivs med ett vinstsyfte utan den måste i princip generera ett överskott för att inte beskattas som hobbyverksamhet.

Glukosmetabolism är ett viktigt område inom djursjukvården. För att diagnosticera olika sjukdomstillstånd relaterade till glukosmetabolismen kan man mäta glukos-, insulin- eller fruktosaminkoncentrationen i blodet. Koncentrationen av dessa parametrar påverkas av olika fysiologiska faktorer. Faktorer som ökar glukoskoncentrationerna i blodet hos både hundar och katter är stress och kolhydratinnehållande måltid. Valpar har högre blodglukoskoncentration än vuxna hundar, medan gamla hundar har högre insulinkoncentration i blodet än yngre hundar. Hundens kön påverkar varken glukos- eller insulinkoncentrationen. Fruktosamin speglar den medelkoncentration av glukos som djuret haft i blodet de senaste 1-3 veckorna.

This work is about euthanasia and how to use it on horses, dogs and cats. A description for each animal is done, about when it is time, why, which methods can be used and who is allowed to use them, how and where it shall be done. The methods we have concentrated on are: - Chemical destruction and the most common drugs for euthanatize horses, dogs and cats. - Physical disruption of the brain activity by a captive bolt, only for horses. The captive bolt only makes the horse unconscious and must always be followed by cutting off the vena jugularis. Then the horse dies because of loss of blood. No matter which method used for euthanizing, the animal must be declared to be dead by the operator before other measures. The testing criteria for death: muscle relaxation and cyanosis, cessation of reflex activity and pupillary dilatation, cessation of respiratory activity and cessation of all cardiac activity.

Several diseases increase the risk of thrombosis in dogs and cats, often with a fatal outcome. Currently there are no definite treatment guidelines for the use of thrombolytic and thromboprofylactic agents in veterinary medicine. None of these drugs are approved for dogs and cats in Sweden. Medicines aimed for humans have been used tentatively. This literature study is an investigation of what is currently known about the effects and safety of these pharmacological agents when used for dogs and cats.

De förklarar varför i institutioner bevaras trots kritik och behåller sin ursprungliga form, inte på grund av institutionernas överlägsenhet utan på grund av försvararnas legitimering av institutionen.Denna gren av institutionell teori har över tid fått stå tillbaka för ny-institutionell teori, som fokuserar på förändring. Den klassiska institutionella teorin saknar empiriskt underlag, varför detta är en empirisk studie av institutionell teori i en svensk kontext. Ett område på vilket institutionell teori är tillämpbart är det svenska uppsägningsförfarandet.Studiens syfte är att öka förståelsen för hur legitimering av institutioner går till i praktiken. Detta uppnås genom frågan ?hur bidrar parternas argument till att institutionen reproduceras?.Frågan besvarades genom kvalitativ data, hämtad från intervjuer med representanter från de parter som debatterar LAS.Denna empiriska undersökning visar att LAS legitimeras genom att tillskrivas normativ värdighet och kognitiv giltighet, samtidigt som kritiker av LAS tillskrivs normativ ovärdighet och kognitiv ogiltighet.
