This essay contents a theme-centred study of Elsa Grave?s Poetry. It presents an all-pervading featured doom-theme and illuminates three motifs and attitudes through which the theme is featured. The presentation includes analyses that bear in mind the double perspectives within Grave?s poems ? the subjective and the universal, where also an omnipresent political attitude is represented.

The essay has its beginning in the source material that deal with ancient Norse religion before the people in the Nordic countries became Christian. The fact that there are no contemporary written or authentic sources available that can tell us something about the Norse religion during the Viking age is problematic. Archeological source materials is available, but tend to talk more about power relationships and social status than the old Norse religion and the way people practiced their faith. Medieval Christian writers are a source of knowledge of the Norse religion; however, they can only highlight the Norse religion from a Christian point of view and ways of evaluating the pagan faith, making them less reliable.The written sources of this paper are based on the written by two medieval Christian writers, Saxo Grammaticus and Snorri Sturluson. These sources are among the first to treat the Norse religion process after the introduction of Christianity in Scandinavia.

Uppsatsen syftar till att genom en analys av tre tal undersöka på vilket sätt USA:s president Barack Obama använder sig av berättelser om sin familj och sin bakgrund i sina tal för att försöka stärka sitt ethos. Uppsatsen har tre huvudsakliga frågeställningar: När i talen pratar Obama om sin familj och bakgrund? Vad i dessa berättelser kan höja Obamas ethos och skapa förtroende för honom? Vilka retoriska grepp använder Obama för att försöka få så många som möjligt att känna att de har något gemensamt med honom? Det material som analyseras i uppsatsen är tre tal framförda av Barack Obama. Det är det presentationstal (The Keynote Speech) som han höll på Demokraternas konvent 2004 när John Kerry skulle nomineras till presidentkandidat, det tal Obama höll om sin pastor när denne uttalat sig rasistiskt om vita (A More Perfect Union) samt det segertal han höll i Grant Park i Chicago 2008 då det stod klart att han blivit vald till USA:s 44:e president. Dessa tre tal har valts ut som analysmaterial då de dels rent kronologiskt speglar olika tidpunkter och avsatser i hans karriär och dels visar på tre olika sammanhang, ett då han egentligen presenterar en annan person (Keynote Speech) men ändå lyckas göra det även till ett presentationstal av sig själv, ett där han snarare ger ett slags försvarstal (A More Perfect Union) och ett som är mer präglat av glädje och förhoppning (The Victory Speech). Den teori som presenteras i uppsatsen rör framför allt ethos, den retoriska situationen och topikläran, men en kortare genomgång av den klassiska retorikens tre talgenrer, partesläran, publikbegreppet och presidenttal genomförs även.

In printed text, sound is a somewhat forgotten aspect. The recitation of text is vital in areas like Poetry and oratory, but still has no distinct technique of being communicated. Emphasis of a word might be expressed through italics, but no canonic character set or system for vocal delivery of texts exists. With this essay we are creating a foundation for a development of such a character set or system. By studying existing visualisations of sound and comparing these with semiotic and perception-based theories we obtain useful insights for a prospective system for visualisations of vocal sounds.We conclude that the aspects of sound one wants to visualise must be carefully defined since the viewer cannot process infinite amounts of information.

This study explores the selection processes regarding fictional literature in English as asecond language education. The aim is to illustrate the relationship between the knowledgeteachers seek to pass on to their students and how the governing documents and the Westernliterary canon affect which literature that is chosen. The study uses qualitative interviews withsix teachers from different gymnasial schools in Northern Sweden. The results show thatteachers use literature as a tool for teaching grammar, lexicon, language structure and storytellingskills. In the more advanced English courses, the teachers prefer to exert more controlover which literature is read, mainly due to the fact that the governing documents specificallyrequire a presence of older, culturally established works.

The purpose of this study is to show what melancholy and irony in my poems express and what techniques that are used to accomplish these effects. Many theorists, among them Sigmund Freud and Julia Kristeva, characterize melancholy as an experience of loss, and therefore one of my questions is what kind of losses appear in my Poetry. In search for an answer I analyze the texts from both a psychoanalytic and a sociological point of view. In the latter perspective I discuss the postmodern society using concepts from contemporary thinkers like Zygmunt Bauman, Fredric Jameson and Jean Baudrillard. Finally, I also examine if melancholy has an influence on the form of the poems.

Gothic literature has a tradition of dealing with dark subjects, themes and motifs, as well as depicting fear in different shapes and forms. Dani Cavallaro describes dark fiction in terms of the "aesthetic of the unwelcome". The philosopher Edmund Burke separates the beautiful from the sublime and writes that everything that is capable of producing a terror of pain and death is a source of the sublime. In her essay "On the Supernatural in Poetry", Ann Radcliffe draws a clear line between the concepts of terror and horror and distinguished them as fundamentally different. In this essay, I define the terms horror and terror by following up the research surrounding Radcliffes statement.

This bachelors thesis examines how av new musicfestival in Umea is communicated on thefestivals website and how the communication is beeing percepted by people who have boughttickets to the festival and people who have chosen not to. The material is based on qualitativeinterviews with theese people and a discourse analysis of the website. The methods beeingused in this thesis are discourse analysis and qualitative interviews. The interviews focuses ontwo groups, people who have bought tickets to the festival and the ones who has not. Theresults of the analysis shows that the website uxufestival.se communicates the vision of aunique festival who brings people together.

This essay presents a comparative analysis of five Swedish translations of three Russian poems: The twelve (??????????) written by Alexander Blok, Requiem (???????) written by Anna Akhmatova and End song (????? ?????) written by Marina Tsvetayeva. The introductory readings of the Swedish translations texts are combined with a parallel reading of the Russian original. In addition to the primary literature I execute readings of secondary literature concerning the Russian, modernistic context, the poets? biographies and the translator?s commentaries concerning the working process of translation.

Sonja Åkesson is one of Sweden?s most well known poets. Her most productive period was from 1957 to 1977, and besides Poetry she wrote novels and drama. Today, Sonja Åkesson is famous for criticizing society, mostly in a feministic way. But she was not aware of her critical approach until she became successful among her feministic readers in 1960, with poems like ?Äktenskapsfrågan? and ?Självbiografi (replik till Ferlinghetti)?.This essay examines professor Yvonne Hirdman?s theory about women?s inferior position in relation to men?s between 1930-1960 in Sweden.

The Iranian artist Shirin Neshat has been living in self-imposed exile since the late 1970s, as she chose not to return to her home country following the ?79 Islamic Revolution. Through her works Neshat examines Iran before and after the revolution and follows political and civil transformations through strong photographs of women in her country of birth.  My own use of the term exile deals with the analysis of the state of exile in relation to artistic work as a globalized and underlying motivation for art and artists. The new definition of exile is analyzed in relation with the artist?s photographs and the verbal and visual statements.

The drama of Kristina Lugn?s Kvinnorna vid Svansjön (The women by the Swan Lake) takes place in the dialogue and language; the same ambiguous language that is found in Lugn?s Poetry. In this essay I examine how meaning and dramatic tension is created in the dialogue of Kvinnorna vid Svansjön.I describe the play, using concepts from various drama theories. However, the most important concepts of classical drama theory such as "story" and "plot" are not really applicable. This is because of the contradictory information given in the dialogue.

This essay examines through a sociological perspective how physical objects in Ted Kooser?s Poetry collection "Delights & Shadows" can be used to depict the characters? social environment. This is done by examining the physical objects found in 25 poems, the relationships between subjects and objects, and how this relationship can describe the social environment. The essay also examines how the relationship between subjects, objects, and the presence of the social environment within the text affects the reader experience. The physical objects are examined with Bill Brown?s Thing Theory as "things" that stop working for humans, when their flow within the circuits of production and distribution, consumption and exhibition is arrested, however momentarily.
