The artist Pehr Hilleström has been credited as the founder of the Swedish genre painting. In the second half of the 18th century he began painting everyday subjects of the different social stratums. Today his paintings are noted for their way of showing us the culture of the time since the photograph still had still not been introduced.   Hilleström was a court painter for King Gustav III who wanted him to depict the Swedish people and their different costumes. The king thought the costumes were of great significance for their psychological impact on people and therefore used them as a way to unite the nation psychologically, both by the genre paintings and also by making a national costume. The costumes were used as a symbol of an unbroken tradition and national heritage.

This essay aims to explain the fluctuations in the Swedish transition rate to higher education between 1923 and 2002. With theories of human capital, and screening, as points of departure, seven variables are selected and their correlation with the transition rate investigated by use of graphs and tables. The variables are unemployment, youth unemployment, the supply of academics, cohort size, number of high school graduates from programs preparing for ensuing studies, relative wage trends for worker categories with differing levels of education, and structural phase. Results show that no single variable nor the theories of human capital or screening can explain the fluctuations in transition rate in full. Instead I propose a theoretic model which amalgamates the above and places risk aversion as the driving force behind the individual?s educational decision.

Arbetet undersöker hur områden som döden, sorg och barns aktörskap gestaltas inom modern barnlitteratur. Studien består av en ideologianalys av åtta bilderböcker som alla blivit utgivna under åren mellan 1999 ? 2011. Syftet är att granska vilka kunskaper och värderingar som kommer till uttryck i barnlitteraturen och hur dessa kan relateras till den forskning som idag existerar om barn i sorg och barns förståelse om döden. Undersökningens fokus kommer vara hur det krisdrabbade barnet skildras i böckerna och vilken syn på barnet som förmedlas.    Ideologianalysen genomförs med analysverktyget parametrar.

For almost a century the debate about women as ordained servants in the Church of Sweden has raged on and on. The decision to open up the priesthood for both genders in 1958 was a milestone in the women?s liberation movement as well as it marks an important time in the church history. The debate has mainly been about how to interpret scripture, who has the right to do so, and so on. Feminist theology has become one way in recent decades to paint a wider and more nuanced picture of history and how to interpret the texts often used to repress women.This essay surveys some of the steps towards that decision, as well as it paints a rough picture of what leadership among women in the church could involve before ordination became an option.

Undersökningens syfte är att utifrån en diskursteoretisk ansats beskriva och analysera bakgrunden till Norrköpings folkparks tillkomst samt folkparksstyrelsens uppfattning om den ideale besökaren under slutet av 1800-talet. Granskningen görs med utgångspunkt från frågorna: med vilka argument resonerade folkparkens styrelse att parken skulle byggas, vad kan man utifrån denna argumentation utläsa om folkparkens funktion och vem var den ideale besökaren enligt folkparksstyrelsen? De resultat som framkommit vid analysen bör ses som tolkningar gjorda utifrån Foucaults teorier om disciplinering och makt.Folkparken var under slutet av 1800-talet en social arena för disciplinering av arbetare. Folkparkens utformning i kombination med tillkomsten av ordningsregler och övervakning kan i det här sammanhanget bl.a. ses som ett led i arbetet med att förändra besökarnas beteende.

Uppsatsen är en induktiv studie med kvalitativa intervjuer, som undersöker gymnasielärare och historikers inställning till regeringens förslag om att historia A på gymnasiet ska fokusera på modern historia. Denna inställning ställer vi sedan i relation till begreppet historiemedvetande och får på detta sätt fram spännande resultat. Vi kunde se att åsikterna går isär, men att de alla i grund och botten har en gemensam tanke om vad som vore bäst för eleverna. Den stora skillnaden ligger i hur detta kan uppnås. Är det en fokusering på moderna tider, eller är det en lång tidsvandring som ger möjligheten att dra långa linjer som är det bästa? Vi kom fram till att en kurs på 100 poäng, som till största delen fokuserar på modern historia, och ger möjligheter att dra paralleller bakåt i tiden vore den bästa lösningen på problemet med dagens förslag.

This Mag. thesis discusses how a gender perspective could be implemented in themanagement of cultural heritage focusing on the built environments in Sweden.The thesis further argues for the need of a gender perspective on the conservationof cultural heritage.The two main approaches, additive through the perspective of the women?s part inhistory and integrated gender perspective, are thoroughly presented in the thesis.In the additive gender approach built objects that represent women?s experiencesand lives are added to a history that traditionally represents men and theirexperiences. The integrated gender perspective includes a gender in all activitiesas an instrument in a historic analysis. The gender perspective illustrates therelation between the sexes.

This master's thesis studies Utländska biblioteket, a 19th century foreign literature subscription library in Karlskrona, Sweden. The aim of the thesis is to investigate Utländska biblioteket between 1835?1864.The material consists primarily of primary sources from the archive of Utländska biblioteket. The main primary sources are the library's accounts book, its minutes, and two book catalogs. Using analytical tools from Jürgen Habermas, feminist criticism of his ideas and from Pierre Bourdieu, as well as results from previous research on older library forms and female organization in the 19th century, the thesis answers questions relating to the library as a society, its members and its book collection.The investigation shows that Utländska biblioteket was a subscription library as well as a book circle.

This graduate essay treats how the cultural heritage of Gothenburg is mediated in different respect.The various sources that have been studied are literary such as guidebooks and books that tell thehistory of Gothenburg. Internet pages and citywalks have also been studied, as well as theinformation the visitor can extract in the area.The introduction presents the subject of the essay, as well as its significance. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the development of the public library in the district of Österåker during a period of 1958-1983. The main goals have been to identify the crucial events in the history of the library within their historical context and to analyse the factors that have been important for the development: financing, location, staffing, stock of books, book-lending level and different activities for children, youngsters and adults. The consideration has been taken to reasons and consequences of these events. The hermeneutic interpretation model of interaction between parts and wholes, between reasons and results is the basic method in this research which leans mainly upon local archives in Österåker. The public library in Österåker was established in 1952 as a fusion of previously existing small libraries: the parish library in Östra Ryd, the Labour Movement?s library and the temperance movement?s library.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur nationella föreställningar producerats och reproducerats inom den svenska scoutrörelsen.Jag har funnit scoutrörelsen intressant att studera därför att den å ena sidan uppstod i en nationalistisk kontext och å andra sidan utgjorde en internationell organisation med internationalistiska strävanden.Denna uppsats utgår från att föreställningar om nationen konstrueras i förhållande till något annat, att Sverige och "svenskhet" formuleras med utgångspunkt i föreställningar om begreppens motsatser. "Vi" uppstår i relation till "de andra". I denna uppsats analyserar jag koloniala föreställningars närvaro i scoutmaterialet och använder dessa för att på så sätt dyrka upp föreställningarna om nationen och om "oss". Detta görs utifrån en diskursanalytisk utgångspunkt med inspiration från postkolonial teori som erbjuder en teoretisk ansats till förklaring av den interaktion i föreställningarna mellan "vi" och "de andra"..

Today Europe is faced with an identity crisis concerning its borders. Turkey stands at the threshold for an EU-membership while the EU-Commission is trying to formulate what constitutes a European identity. This identity seeking process will determine the future not only for Turkey, but also for immigrants now living in Europe.In this thesis a discourse analysis, underpinned by socialconstructionist theory, is conducted to explore how the European identity has been constructed throughout history up until today. A starting point is that identity always is defined through a dialectical relationship to "otherness". Therefore the analysis is focused not only on what a European identity consists of but also what and who it excludes.
