Hon ansåg att omvårdnad inte var underordnad medicinen och genom utbildning ville hon göra omvårdnad till ett kompetens-område med yrkesstatus. En humanistisk människosyn är grunden för omvårdnadsvetenskapen och genomsyrar dagens sjuksköterskeutbildning samt lagar och riktlinjer för sjuksköterskans arbete. Etik innebär att överväga och välja det handlingsalternativ som anses mest moraliskt rätt i situationen. Enligt filosoferna Lögstrup och Lévinas samt omvårdnadsteoretikern Watson är det först i mötet med andra människor som moraliska regler uppstår.
