This paper is about the new methods and metrics used in industry and business today striving for better revenues and larger market shares. It investigates the relations between the old fordistic and tayloristic way of manufacturing and compares it to the models used in industry today for being competitive, seeking to please customers and becoming more flexible. More specific the paper is about if Six Sigma and lean production are the key for succeeding these days. SKF:s factory in Gothenburg and other companies will make an example for how these methods are used in practice.The aim is to try to answer if these systems with inherited tools and methods are the right way to get the flexibility that is needed for being able to deliver the right goods to customers and market. For a company to be flexible decisions must be made fast and needed changes must be able to be done easy and without too large costs and investments.

This graduation work is a result of implementing Lean Production using OEE and SMED at Enics Sweden AB in Malmö. Enics doesn?t have an established improvement concept and therefore should this work serve as an introduction to possibly start with Lean Production. A result in this report is that an OEE value has been identified within a common order at Enics. Lean har ökat i populäritet inom den offentliga sektorn men den forskning som finns om lean i detta sammanhang är fortfarande begränsad. Syftet med uppsatsen är att analysera hur lean tillämpas i svensk offentlig sektor och om lean är en meningsfull satsning försvenska kommuner. Detta görs genom en kvalitativ fallstudie där vi intervjuar medarbetare på två kommunala förvaltningar i Växjö kommun. Analysen jämför datan med 14 principer som leankonceptet bygger på och diskuterar speciella förutsättningarför lean i offentlig sektor. Leansatsningen ställs i relation till effekterna av lean hos verksamheterna.

Inom IT-branschen läggs det mycket resurser på att effektivisera arbetssätt, och att hitta det optimala sättet att styra och leda projekt är en ständig utmaning. Dagens IT-organisationer befinner sig även i en situation där marknaden ställer krav på minskade kostnader men samtidigt en högre nivå av support och service. Utifrån detta har det genererats en uppsjö olika arbetssätt och tillhörande verktyg som alla har som mål att strukturera eller effektivisera systemutvecklingsprocessen. Ett av dessa arbetssätt är Lean IT som hämtar sina grunder från det väl beprövade produktionssystemet Lean manufacturing.Inom systemutvecklingsbranschen arbetas det ofta i projektform och att ha en bra projektledning är ofta en av faktorerna bakom ett lyckat projekt. För att en projektledare ska kunna leda projektet till framgång krävs det att denne har en bra uppfattning om arbetssättet inom organisationen och projektgruppen.

Denna kandidatuppsats baseras på en fallstudie om hur styrningsmodellen Lean har implementeras på OKQ8:s stationer. Studien ämnar vidare undersöka vilka faktorer som påverkar utfallet samt undersöka hur Lean har påverkat effektiviteten på stationerna. För att besvara detta har intervjuer genomförts med personal på OKQ8. Studien analyserar hur faktorer så som stress, arbetskraftsflexibilitet och delaktighet har påverkat utfallet av implementeringen. Vidare har även nyckeltal använts för att analysera om Lean har lett till att organisationen har blivit mer effektiv.

This study has investigated the possibilities of implementing lean in a division of a hospital in Stockholm. The goal was to reduce the lead time for the patient to get his diagnose by implementing lean in the two production flows of this division. In order to accomplish it, a complete map over the value stream has been done. With the help of the value stream map and lean theory a list over the processes in contradiction with lean has been made. Finally propositions to implement lean and by this way reduce the lead times in this stream have been made out.

During the middle of the 18th century the development of Toyota Production System, TPS, started in order to streamline the processes. TPS was based on the principles of assembly line production but unlike previous performers Toyota let the manufacturing be constantly affected by demand. At the end of the 18th century TPS was described by Womack and Jones in the book "The machine that changed the world - the story of lean producion" where TPS got the name lean. The principles behind lean is to maximize customer value and eliminate waste which means making products and services more valuable to the customer. 1Lean was for a long time a philosophy and an approach limited to industries and production based companies.

They have developed and modified the basic concept in order to apply it and excluded the parts they did not consider necessary. The aim of this case study was to investigate the role of leadership and interpersonal relations among staff during implementation of lean at a University Hospital in Sweden. The 15 respondents were leaders and staff members from different wards and clinics, who had started working according to lean principles. One of the methods used was explorative, low structured interviews. Other methods used for gathering information about the case was attending lectures about lean healthcare at the hospital, part-taking in the lean game and reading articles about lean and the implementation in both daily press and on the intranet of the hospital. The results showed that an open and accessible leader that coaches his/her staff and supports their work, helps the staff to develop a lean identity.

Today, the management concept of lean has stretched far from its origins in the Japanese automobile industry. When reaching the Swedish restaurant industry, the conditions for a successful implementation of lean change as a result of the high employee turnover and the significant amount of part-time employees characteristic for the industry. Combined with a high-end service profile, these workforce characteristics seem inconsistent with some of the basic principles of lean. By conducting a case study, this thesis aims to investigate the effects of a variable workforce on the enablers for a successful implementation of lean in a high-end service industry. Using a theoretical framework consisting of enablers for an implementation of lean in services, the study finds that the variable workforce inhibits an implementation of lean by complicating the effects of traditional training, as well as the possibility of understanding the lean concept at all levels of the organization.
