Background: Pet therapy has existed as a concept since 1964 when the American child psychologist Boris Levinson coined the term. Nowadays Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) and Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) are both recognized concepts, and with progressed research the science of pet therapy increases.Purpose: To summate the most recent science in pet therapy (therapy dog) research with focus on physical, psychical, and social effects.Methods: Literature study/review with descriptive design, research on 21 articles published from year 2003 and onward. Articles used in the study were chosen through beforehand decided criteria, subject to quality rating, and summated in an overview. The main results were summated and presented in similarities and differences.Results: The main result of the summation was that important results could be measured in each of the three fields of research. Physical/physiological effects: pain relief, differentiated results on vital signs, and increased activity.

The aim of the present literature study was to define and describe the area ?compliance in veterinary medicine? (i.e. the way treatment recommendations are being performed) and discuss the factors that influence the level of compliance. Based on the findings, a model that intended to increase compliance in orthopedic postoperative rehabilitation of dogs was designed. In the daily work as a veterinary nurse it is essential that one provides the best possible care to the animals from the beginning to the end of the treatment.

Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison´s disease) results from insufficient production of glucocorticoid and mineralcorticoid hormones from the adrenal glands. The disease is often difficult to diagnose in an early stage because of the multitude of associated vague clinical signs. The standard poodle is one breed presupposed to be at higher risk of developing the disease. The purpose of this study was to give a review of canine hypoadrenocorticism as described in literature, and to characterise Addison´s disease in a population of standard poodles in Sweden. Statistics on incidenceproportions by breed for hypoadrenocorticism from the database of the Swedish insurance company Agria are presented.

This study shows how two different schools use dogs as a method of education. The purpose was to find out what kind of pedagogical thoughts my informants have about children' slearning in their connection with dogs, and in which way the interaction between the children and the dogs could affect the learning ability. I also wanted to find out what kind of possibilities and restrictions the dogs could give to the education according to my informants but also to find out how the projects were financed. To be able to answer these questions I put together a qualitative study, I had four interviews with people that were involved in the projects in one way or the other. To analyse the empirical material I looked up different theories about teaching, communication, interaction and motivation.My results showed that both schools have applied the method of ?teaching dogs? as a form of resource for students with special needs.

Due to progresses constantly being made in veterinary medicine combined with increasing knowledge in pet owners, the dogs of today gets older than before. The population of geriatric dogs is there for constantly growing, which makes them an important group of patients on small animal clinics and hospitals. As dogs age, so do their interior organs. Geriatric dogs are prone to several diseases and in this text the author has decided to focus on three of the most common: Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS), cancer and osteoarthritis (AO). All of these illnesses are incurable in dogs, but it is important to remember that they are still treatable.

Mellan år 1996 till år 2006 minskade befolkningen i 200 av Sveriges 290 kommuner och prognoser visar på att denna utveckling kommer att fortsätta i framtiden. Samtidigt förs en allt mer uttalad regionpolitik som verkar för att skapa några få starka tillväxtområden i landet med tydliga gränser mot omvärlden. När allt fokus läggs på att utveckla storstadsområdena, blir det allt svårare för orter i gles- och landsbygd att konkurrera om arbete och invånare.Syftet men denna uppsats är att lyfta fram problematiken med krympande städer i Sverige och undersöka metoder som förekommer för att bemöta befolkningsminskning. Målet är att ge en ökad förståelse för situationen som råder i många svenska städer idag och hur kommuner arbetar med att vända den nedåtgående trenden. Metoden för uppsatsen har varit litteraturstudier eftersom den ger bred kunskap om ämnet och bättre möjligheter för att jämföra situationen i olika delar av landet.

Behavioral problems are one of the leading reasons for re-homing and euthanasia in dogs. It is estimated that between 40 ? 87 % of dogs suffer from some sort of behavioural problem, making it an important animal welfare issue. Separation anxiety is one of the most common behavior problems encountered in dogs after problems related to aggression. This thesis is aimed at examining the etiology behind separation anxiety related behavior in dogs based on existing literature as well as comparing and evaluating the efficiency on suggested treatment protocols.

The field of veterinary nursing should be based upon research and proven experience. Few studies have been performed within the area of distal limb bandages. Therefore the aim of this study was to examine and describe how to place a distal fore limb bandage based on proven experience. Data material was collected through four interviews with professional veterinary nurses, and then analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. In the analysis data material was transcribed and then divided into meaningful units that responded to the aim. The meaningful units were then condensed.

Just nu pågår en debatt om huruvida djur är lämpliga på cirkus. Argument emot djur på cirkus säger bland annat att djurens naturliga beteende inte tillgodoses och att djuren måste stå ut med ett odrägligt liv bara för att underhålla oss. Argument för djur på cirkus är bland annat att djuren på cirkus ofta har det bättre än till exempel våra sällskapsdjur som ofta får vara ensamma stor del av dagen. Det vi känner är att det ofta saknas tillräcklig kunskap i diskussioner om hur djuren på cirkus lever och att det är svårt att kunna ta ställning till om djur är lämpliga på cirkus eller inte, när vi inte har en objektiv grund att utgå ifrån. För att få en inblick i både domesticerade djurs och mer exotiska djurs liv på cirkus och kunna avgöra om något djurslag eventuellt passar bättre än andra på cirkus, har vi valt att fördjupa oss i två domesticerade djurslag (hund och häst) och tre icke- domesticerade djurslag (elefant, sjölejon och lama), som förekommer på cirkusar i Sverige. Frågeställningar som vi ska försöka besvara: ? Hur lever djuren på cirkus? ? Vilka lagar och bestämmelser skyddar cirkusdjuren och vad säger de? ? Hur lever de djurslag som vi har valt att skriva om i det vilda och vilka särskilda naturliga beteenden och behov har de? ? Är djur lämpliga på cirkus sett utifrån hur de har utvecklats evolutionärt? ? Vilka eventuella beteendestörningar, skador och sjukdomar kan djuren få av ett liv på cirkus? Utifrån dessa frågeställningar försöker vi hitta och sammanställa relevant forskning och statistik för att sedan kunna diskutera hur lämpliga olika djurslag är på cirkus, samt ge en bas åt allmänheten för vidare diskussion..

Plack och tandsten är den vanligaste åkomma hos hundar. Studier har visat att det effektivaste sättet att förhindra plack- och tandstensbildning är genom tandborstning. Dessvärre är compliance för detta lågt och många djurägare avstår från tandborstning, trots att de fått instruktioner i hur de ska gå tillväga. Därför var syftet med denna litteraturstudie att undersöka om och i vilken utsträckning fodervalet påverkar bildningen av plack och tandsten. Resultatet visar att torrfoder ger en minskning av plack och tandsten jämfört med att ge våtfoder, men det är inte allt torrfoder som är effektivt mot tandsten. Kommersiella torrfoderkulor har oftast en struktur som gör att foderkulan faller sönder när hundens tand penetrerar foderkulan.

Myxomatös mitralisklaffdegeneration (MMVD) är den vanligaste hjärtsjukdomen hos hund. Sjukdomen debuterar vanligtvis hos medelålders till äldre hundar och det är främst små- mellanstora raser som drabbas. Cavalier King Charles spaniel kan ha utvecklat MMVD redan vid två-tre års ålder. Genetiska studier har identifierat loci (områden i genomet) kopplade till tidig utveckling av sjukdomen. Sjukdomen leder till en myxomatös degeneration av mitralisklaffarna vilket leder till läckage av blod från vänster kammare till vänster förmak.

Produkten som presenteras i denna rapport har tagits fram i ett examensarbete under hösten 2006/våren 2007, från idé till prototyp. Projektet startade utifrån en idé av Jonas Westberg, vVD på A2B Group, som upptäckte ett stort behov som hundägare när det blir varmt i bilen under sommaren och det inte går att lämna kvar hunden i en kortare tid. Då Jonas Westberg saknade både tid och kunskap inom detta område, lämnade han över projektet som sedan dess har finansierats av A2B Group och ALMI företagspartner.

The occurrence of small amounts of albumin in urine, microalbuminuria (MA), is used both in human- and veterinary medicine as an indicator for patients who have developing proteinuria. Proteinuria can be prerenal, renal or postrenal which is important to establish during an investigation. With conventional methods decreased renal function is not detected until 70 % of renal function is lost. The ability to detect and start a treatment earlier might reverse or slow the progression of disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of Heska® E.R.D.-Health Screen?, a test for microalbuminuria in dogs, to detect albuminuria.

The body contains of billions of cells that all have to obey the regulations that are established. If a cell is exposed to a harmful substance, for example a chemical, it can be transformed into a tumourcell. Normally the body has a good defence but the tumourcell can survive and start to divide unrestrained. A tumour is starting to develop.

The purpose of this essay is to analyze three works that are regarded as fictional biographies. In all three selected works the protagonists are historical Swedish women who are known for being a part of the cultural sphere of their time. Two of them are also recognized as important and somewhat pivotal characters in the struggle for women?s rights at the turn of the 19th century. The analyzed works, however, accentuate the women?s private life.
