Munhålestatus hos arbetande hästar :
Seventy-two working Horses (they had been ridden with bit and bridle within the last two weeks) were examined in the oral cavity. Findings and status were noted. The Horses were randomly chosen among individuals without clinical symptoms from the mouth and gastrointestinal system.
The result showed that 93% of the Horses had changes in the mucus membranes, 86% in the form of ulcerations. The P2 region was most commonly affected followed by wounds more caudally in the mouth (P3-M3 region).
Equine metabolic syndrome
Obese Horses with insulin resistance are often also afflicted with laminitis. Horses with these symptoms are given the diagnosis equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). Signs of insulin resistance are excessive accumulation of adipose tissue on the neck, around the withers and on the dorsal area of the hindquarters. Insulin resistance means that the function of insulin is defective and does not stimulate glucose uptake by the cells in the body in the correct way. This will result in an increased insulin release.
Utfodring av hästar i tropiska klimat : möjlighet att använda regionala fodermedel i Tamil Nadu, Indien.
This study consists of a literature study and a survey in Tamil Nadu, India. The aim of the study was to get an understanding of horse feeding in tropical climates and what kind of feeding related problems that could occur because of the fodder. Information and data were collected from eight different stables and from Tamil Nadu University of Agriculture in the region of Tamil Nadu in March-April 2009. The Horses in Tamil Nadu were given rice straw, unknown grass, Cynodon dactylon, lucerne, maize, Pennisetum glaucum x Pennisetum purpureum hybrid and Chloris gayana as roughage. As concentrates, the Horses were given wheat bran, oats, barley, soybean meal, maize, carrots, coconut cake, peanut cake, horse gram and chick pea.
Intramuscular administration of two dosage forms of benzylpenicillin in horse - pain assessment
In veterinary medicine, penicillin is the most used antibiotic in Sweden. Two dosage forms of penicillin are available in Sweden for use in Horses, sodium benzylpenicillin (Na-pc) and procaine benzylpenicillin (proc-pc). Proc-pc is the most used dosage form and is used for intramuscular administration which allows horse owners to treat an animal at home under veterinary instruction. Na-pc is only approved for intravenous use in Horses.
Penicillin is normally well tolerated by Horses but a serious, sometimes life-threatening, adverse reaction called penicillin shock may occur.
Framställningen av könsroller i barnböcker : En kvalitativ textanalysstudie av fem hästböcker
The purpose of this paper is to find out which characteristics the female and male characters have in five selected horse books in children's literature. I have analyzed five horse books by Professor Maria Nikolajeva?s gender roles schedule. I have chosen to do a qualitative text analysis and the questions I chose to ask for the books are: Which characteristics does the girls and the boys have in the selected horse books according to Nikolajeva?s gender chart? What is the relationship between the main characters and the horse/Horses according to the theories of Backman? What does the typical horse book look like today? What I come to conclusion in my paper is that all the horse books I analyzed have female main characters, and the girls in these books about Horses take a lot of space and demonstrate themselves strong.
Cutaneous Melanoma in the Grey Horse
Equine cutaneous melanomas arise much more often in Horses with a grey coat color than in Horses of other colors. Some scientists have in different studies come to the conclusion that the melanomas are neoplasms which can be classified by examining their histological and macroscopic features. The more defined and demarcated a tumor is, the more benign it tends to be. Other scientists believe that the skin lesions are the result of a pigmentation disorder that is linked to the greying of the coat color. According to this theory, the lesions are not malignant although they have the ability to metastasize.
Elitskon : An objective kinematic evaluation
Elitskon? is a new type of Horseshoe for trotters. It is supposed to give the horse a trot that mimics the movement pattern of a horse trotting unshod. Many Horses show a better trot unshod but this can only be used to a limited extent due to the great wear and tear of the hoof.
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the qualities of Elitskon? are similar to the unshod horse or the traditional aluminium Horseshoe.
Association of the DMRT3 nonsense mutation with pattern of locomotion in five different horse breeds
A nonsense mutation in the DMRT3 gene has been shown to have a large impact on pattern of locomotion in Horses. Horses that can perform several other gaits in addition to the normally occurring gaits, walk, trot and canter, are often hetero (CA)- or homozygous (AA) for this nonsense mutation. Horses that only can perform walk, trot and canter are often homozygous for the wild-type gene (CC). For example the Icelandic Horse is a gaited breed. Five-gaited Icelandic Horses can perform both flying pace and tölt, except for the normally occurring gaits, walk, trot and canter, and are often homozygous for this nonsense mutation (AA).
Utveckling av metod för utvärdering av synnervens funktion hos häst :
VEP, visual evoked potential is an electrophysiologic test that can be used for evaluating the higher visual pathways. The aim of this study was to investigate if it is possible to adapt this method to Horses. This method could have a clinical use in addition to the existing diagnostic methods that are available to evaluate vision in Horses.
Firstly, this study contains a summary of relevant studies done on animals and, secondly, an experimental part where the possibility of recording VEP in nonsedated and sedated Horses is investigated and where to position the recording electrode to obtain the best results.
Our results show that it is possible to record VEP in Horses in a clinical setting. VEP was best recorded in the sedated horse to avoid movement artifacts and other disturbances.

Sport Horses are widely used for performance in jumping, dressage, endurance etc. To enable comparisons of Horses, training facilities, programs or physical status, an exercise test can be used. Exercise tests are also important to increase knowledge about exercise physiology of the horse considering different ways of training to compare training methods or individual qualities, development of an individual or other investigations of equine exercise physiology. Since several investigations are done on standard- and thoroughbred Horses but less on sport Horses, it is of great importance to get an overview of the investigations done. Most common is to investigate heart rate and lactate concentration.
Effects of treatment with PiNO (Pulsed Inhaled Nitric-Oxide) on the metabolism in colic horses undergoing abdominal surgery.
The main objective of this research was to study how increased arterial oxygenation by the use of Pulsed Inhaled Nitric-Oxide (PiNO) influenced the metabolic and cardiovascular parameters on Horses undergoing acute abdominal surgery because of colic. The parameters blood lactate, blood glucose, pH and heart rate were evaluated before and during anesthesia and closely after recovery. The study showed that blood lactate concentrations decreased significantly during anaesthesia in Horses treated with PiNO compared to non-treated Horses. It was also seen that the lactate concentration decreased most in Horses with the highest levels before PiNO treatment. Since enhanced oxygen extraction ratio was evident in the PiNO group, improved oxygen delivery to the tissue may be a possible explanation for the improved situation.
En retrospektiv fallstudie av konservativ behandling av intraartikulära hovbensfrakturer, typ II och III, hos rid- och körhästar :
Hospital records of 32 non-raceHorses referred to Skara Animal Hospital and Halland Animal Hospital, Sweden, between January 1995 and September 2001 for intraarticular fractures of the third phalanx, were reviewed, and follow-up information on final outcome was collected to determine whether any injury or treatment factors could be associated with the outcome. Mean age of the Horses was 8.3 years (range, 1-20 years), and follow-up time ranged from 1 to 7 years after injury. In 11 (34%) of the Horses, injury involved the front limbs. Twenty-two (69%) Horses returned to their original level of use. There was no statistically significant correlation between outcome and elapsed time from injury to treatment, treatment variables, or bony union in the present study.

The Horses? natural behaviour is easier to satisfy in a loose-housing system than housed in a traditional box. Law?s and science suggest that we should house Horses in loose-housing, which improve the horse possibility to perform natural behaviours, to interact socially with other Horses and to have more possibility to movement. It?s more timesaving in a working population aspect and a economic gain in materials.
We noticed that it?s different opinions about what people in the horse society thinks about having youngsters housed in a loose-housing system.
Botulism hos svenska hästar :
Botulism is a serious disease with high mortality that can affect Horses. Due to this about 20-30 percent of the Horses in Sweden are vaccinated against botulism.
The purpose of this study was to see how common botulism is in the Swedish horse population and to se if a connection between feeding with haylage and botulism could be seen. In addition to this, the study aimed to find how common vaccination against botulism is among Swedish Horses and on what grounds the diagnosis botulism is made.
Medical records of Horses being diagnosed with botulism at all the major large animal hospitals in Sweden between 1995-2005 were searched. In addition to this the database where general practitioners report their cases as well as the cases with botulism reported to the insurance companies were included.
The results of this study show that only 0,03 percent of the Swedish horse population has been diagnosed with botulism during the time period this study covers. In all the cases included in this study the diagnosis was made based on clinical signs and in none of the cases verification by isolating the toxin was possible.
In all cases where forage is noted in the journals the horse has been feed haylage which indicate that there is a connection between the use of haylage and botulism.
Three Horses died despite being partially vaccinated against botulism type B which indicate that a correct vaccination has to be done before the horse get any protection or that the correct diagnosis was not botulism type B..
Prognos vid kirurgisk behandling av kolik : en studie över 249 hästar under perioden 2002 till 2005 försäkrade i Agria
In total 249 Horses surgically treated for colic in Sweden during 2002 until 2005 were studied. The Horses was identified by the animal insurance company Agria. Survival was studied with respect to age, gender, breed, diagnosis (small intestinal problems, caecal problems, large intestinal problems, incarceration in nephrosplenic ligament, unspecific colic and other colic problems) and treating hospital. Different survivals were calculated. For short-term survival proportions was used and for long-term it was done using Kaplan-Meier technique and log-rank testing.
