Korsförlamning hos häst : fodrets påverkan
The purpose of this thesis has been to gather knowledge about the complaints of tying-up in
horses and to show that the importance of feeding. The thesis includes a literature review of
tying-up how preventative measures by feeding can be made. In the equine sport, crosscountry,
horses occasionally suffers from tying-up, a muscle disease. An increased knowledge
about the disease is demanded by riders and trainers as the disease disrupts training and
competition of suffered horses. A cross-country horse works very hard in training and during
competitions but the work bouts are long enough for the muscle cells to use aerobic pathways
in the metabolism.
Progesteronrelaterad diabetes mellitus hos älghund :
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a relatively common endocrine disease in dogs and is more common in certain breeds than others, e.g. Nordic spitz breeds. Within the Swedish and Norwegian Elkhound population, female dogs are almost exclusively affected. The hypothesis in this study is that Swedish- and Norwegian Elkhounds develop DM during the progesterone phase of estrous (diestrous or pregnancy).
Medical records from 51 female dogs of the breeds Swedish and Norwegian Elkhound were studied.
Tillfrisknande och användning av hästar med fång :
Laminitis has crippled horses through times and many cures have been used to
treat it. Since the mechanism of the disease is yet not fully understood, treatments
are only ways to alleviate the pain and at best, slow down the pathological process
enough to make time for improvement. This paper is a retrospective study of 71
horses treated by a protocol at Hästsjukhuset Strömsholm. The protocol implies
three visits at zero, five and fifteen weeks. At each the horse is evaluated and
treated by a veterinarian.
Klinisk termografi som diagnostiskt hjälpmedel vid rörelsestörning hos häst :
Thermography is the assesment of the surface temperature of the horses body and it falls into the categori of physiological imaging. Thermography allows us to portray inflammation and changes in sympathetic tone in a graphical manner.
The purpose of this study was to review thermography in equine medicine and to evaluate thermography as an aid in the diagnosis of lamness in horses.
Thermography has been helpful to identyfy sprains, stress fractures, shin splints and soft tissue, tendon, ligamentous and nerv injuries and to monitor healing processes during rehabilitation. Routine thermography may reveal inflammatory responses prior to clinical signs.
In present study thermograpy gave especially valuabel information in two cases. In one horse reduced blood flow in a. saphena due to a thrombosis were visualised and in the other horse bilateral thoracolumbal radiculopati was diagnosed.
Renal dysplasi hos hund :
Renal dysplasia is a developmental anomaly of the kidneys which is considered to be the primary lesion in juvenile progressive nephropathy, a condition leading to chronic renal failure in young dogs. It is defined as disorganised development of the renal parenchyma due to abnormal differentiation, and pathological lesions include persistent foetal structures, dysplastic tubules and cartilaginous and osseus metaplasia. The aetiology of renal dysplasia in dogs is still unknown, but possible causes are infection with canine herpesvirus, teratogenic substances or intrauterine ureteral obstruction. In some breeds renal dysplasia is a familial or inherited disease. Clinical signs of chronic renal failure, such as polyuria, polydipsia, vomiting, weight loss, anorexia, lethargy and anemia, usually appear before the age of 2 years.
En farmakokinetisk pilotstudie av olika beredningar av bensylpenicillin intramuskulärt till häst :
Penicillin G (benzylpenicillin) is the most commonly used antimicrobial substance used in equine medicine today. Two forms of penicillin G are available for equine use; one form is the poorly soluble penicillin G procaine and the other is the very soluble sodium salt. Although penicillin has a wide safety margin and is considered to possess a good tolerance, reactions due to side effects are sometimes encountered, which commonly is named ?penicillin-shock?. The etiology behind penicillin shock in horses is not completely understood, but the most common reason is believed to be procaine toxicity.
Ögonbehandling av häst med lavage system och infusionspump Omvårdnadsaspekter : omvårdnadsaspekter
Objective ? To study the requirement of nursing care of the equine patient during eye treatment with a lavage system together with a constant rate infusion pump.
Procedures ? Three veterinary nurses at ATG: s Hästsjukhus in Skara were asked nine questions at individual interviews. Inclusion criteria for participation in the interview were that the nurse should have treated equines with and without the infusion pump to the lavage system, but also traditionally with eye drops.
Results ? The equine had a higher well-being since it experienced less stress during eye treatment with the infusion pump compared to treatment given by hand through the lavage system. The treatment would be more effective with constant rate infusion and save costs for the owner.
Övervakning vid allmän anestesi och stående ingrepp på häst
The purpose of this literature study was to describe techniques for monitoring general anesthesia and standing chemical restraint in the horse. A number of various techniques and devices related to e.g. blood pressure measurement, blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry are defined, and finally their clinical relevance and reliability are discussed.
The equine patient is generally far more exposed to anesthesia-related risks than other smaller species. Complications such as hypotension and hypercapnia are commonly seen during general anesthesia. Thus, close monitoring is essentially performed by the veterinary nurse, whom is responsible for monitoring the anesthetized patient.
Hästar i skrämmande situationer : en jämförelse mellan hanterad respektive fri habituering
In connection with riding and handling of horses, many accidents that can cause severe injuries to both horses and humans are existent. The cause is in most cases that the horse is frightened. The horse's fear also affects its usefulness and it has been shown to have adverse effects on the horse's welfare. To increase safety and improve the welfare of both humans and horses, it is important to find appropriate training methods to reduce the fear of horses in frightening situations. This experimental study compares handled habituation to free habituation.
Idiopatisk epilepsi : en fallstudie
Epilepsy is a common neurological condition in dogs, being a common reason for
death in the statistics from the insurance company Agria in Sweden. Among the
different types of epilepsy, idiopathic epilepsy (IE) is the most common and is
characterized by the fact that a veterinary examination does not reveal a cause for
the seizures. This study has been conducted through studies of medical records
and interviews with dog owners. From a total number of 103 dogs that were
neurologically examined for seizures, 42 dogs met the inclusion criteria, being
classified as having idiopathic epilepsy. When the study was performed, 28 dogs
had died, while 14 were still alive.
Förebyggande djuromvårdnad mot post-anestetisk myopati hos häst
Post-anaesthetic myopathy (PAM) is a serious occasional complication of general anaesthesia in horses. It causes not only pain and suffering to the horse, but also suffering (trauma) to the owner with increased veterinary costs. In the worst case PAM can be fatal. The anaesthetic nurse must know which parameters have to be taken into consideration in the prevention of PAM, to be able to prevent it, and use that knowledge for the animals safety. The aim of this literature review was to investigate and make a presentation of the factors and measurements associated with PAM, with focus on how to monitor these measurements to prevent it from happening, and the advice a Veterinary nurse can give to the horse owner regarding this condition.
According to literature there a few factors that greatly increase the risk of PAM, these include- hypotension, periods less than 60 mmHg significantly increases the risk.
Pilotstudie för utformning av modell att uvärdera utrustning
Swedish Trotting association was formed in 1925. They are the ones who design the regulations concerning what is permissible and not permissible for the horse, driver and trainer, when they have a license at a Swedish racing track. The Veterinary department of Swedish Trotting association decides in consultation with representatives from veterinaries around the country what is allowed and not allowed, based proven experience, combined with the availability of scientific data and Veterinary Department's own assessment.
After stricter regulations for good animal welfare from the Swedish government, Swedish Trotting association is going to work out a workable model for how new equipment can be tested in the future to see how the equipment affects the horse. In the future, all equipment will be objectively tested before approved. The purpose of this work was to develop a well-functioning model for this.
The research-question for this work is:
Is this study design a well-functioning model of how the equipment should be tested in the future?
The equipment used for designing this model was bitless bridle with a bit.
Arvets betydelse för mjölkkors beteende :
It becomes more important to consider different behaviour traits in the selection for dairy cows to be suitable in the production systems of today. The purpose of this investigation was to study the genetic background to behavioural traits and the heritabilities for temperament, rank order, aggressiveness, feeding behaviour and for learning behaviour. Moreover, the genetic correlations to other traits were studied. To be included in a breeding programme a trait needs to have enough genetic variation, a moderate to high heritability or to be correlated to another measurable trait. Behaviour is a quantitative trait affected by many genes and the environment.
De Paard - Visions of Playtopia
Playsam in Kalmar AB are world famous for their design of the toys they sell. Together with their CEO Carl Zedig the goal was to find a new product for the company. The process has far from been linear, I started off in one direction, got rejected, turned another way and we finally decided to create a rocking horse in a De Stijl style. At the same time taking consideration of the demands from Playsam and myself.Playsam?s products are archetypes of ordinary objects around us such as the car or the aeroplane. The company mainly produces its toys in wood and the stylized shape together with the blank painted surface has become a hallmark for them.De Stijl, the Dutch art movement containing artists, designers and architects such as Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld.
Problematiken med aggressiva hundar och hur människor förhåller sig till den
In today's society dogs have become more popular as pets. This increase may result in more dog owners with lack of knowledge on how to care for them. A major social issue is the societies viewpoint to fighting breeds and similar breeds with an aggressive behavior. We experience that there is an increasing problem with aggressive dogs and their owners in Sweden that needs to be taken seriously. The aim of our study is to find out if people in Sweden think there is a problem with aggressive dogs. The study has been carried out as a literature study and a survey.
