In two feeding experiments Bacillus induced priming of plant defense was tested for its effect against the generalist insect pest Spodoptera littoralis. The main hypothesis for the study was that Bacillus induced priming would enable the plant Arabidopsis thaliana to defend itself better against this insect herbivore since this priming seems to involve jasmonic acid, known to be important for plant defense to insects. A secondary objective of the study was to examine if any differences in a primed defense capability could be seen between different natural genetic variants (ecotypes) of A. thaliana reflecting habitat differences in pest pressure. The methods used for plant cultivation and Bacillus inoculation were aimed at reflecting conditions that can be expected in an agricultural cropping system. This meant that all plants were cultivated in soil, and the feeding experiments were conducted with the plants growing intact in the soil system.

Detta arbete syftar till att bidra till större insikt i sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen i två muslimska länder, Iran och Turkiet, och på så sätt ge förståelse för hur religion och kultur kan påverka sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen. Egna erfarenheter säger oss att sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen på mångkulturella skolor i Sverige bäddar för konflikter då invandrarföräldrars värderingar inte stämmer överens med den svenska skolans. Vi har utfört ett fältarbete i de båda länderna och intervjuat lärare och rektorer, med koppling till sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen, för att få svar på våra frågeställningar. Resultaten synliggjorde att pubertet och hygien är i fokus i sex- och samlevnadsundervisningen i de respektive länderna. Därtill uppenbarades ?tabuområden? inom ämnesinnehållet.

This study is about how changed light conditions induce dormancy in plants. It is divided in two parts. First a literature study where quantification of light, the concept dormancy, photoperiod and light quality are discussed. Second an experimental part, where the importance of light for sprouting capacity in root buds of perennial sow thistle (Sonchus arvensis L.) is investigated.In the science in how flowering in plants are induced the concepts short day/long day plants and light dominant/dark dominant are well-established. These concepts can also be applied to how light induce dormancy in plants.

The intention of this study is to investigate possible excitation on dogs due to buprenorphine treatment. The reason for it to be about buprenorphine and not any other opioid is due to its relevance being one of the most popular opioids in animal care, as well as the authors own experience with what seems to be buprenorphine induced excitation in her own dog. The study consists of a literature review and an internet based survey containing thirty questions sent out to twelve animal clinics and animal hospitals. Significant agitative effects on behavior has been found in studies on horses, sheep, goats, rats and mice, but no one shows the effects of buprenorphine on dogs. The literature on opiod effects on dog behavior seems sparse.

Jag har gjort en fallstudie av sex- och samlevnadsundervisning i en muslimsk fri skola. Studien bygger på en kvalitativ undersökning. Jag har främst använt mig av kvalitativa intervjuer och observation.Studiens syfte är att få förståelse på hur denna undervisning är utformad i en religiös skola som har en muslimsk profil. Vidare är syftet att försöka öka förståelsen för hur elevernas religion eller islamisk kultur kan påverka deras lärande och uppfattningar om sex - och samlevnadsfrågor utifrån lärarens perspektiv.Undersökningens resultat visar att människokroppens byggnad och funktion samt pubertetens inverkan på individen, är i fokus i sex- och samlevnadsundervisning i denna skola såväl för flickor som för killar. Fokus i flickors undervisning var i arrangerat äktenskap och omskärelse.

På kort tid har Colombia gått från ett totalförbud mot abort till en oväntad legalisering, en kontroversiell lagändring vilken är ett resultat av inhemska och internationella organisationers arbete i kombination med det globala civilsamhället. Denna utveckling visar en oväntad källa till makt som blir intressant att fördjupa sig i då det är ett aktuellt fenomen, och en kritisk fråga som kom ett genomföra en radikal förändring i ett konservativt klimat. Vi studerar hur olika rådande teorier om det globala civilsamhällets påverkan på politiken kan ge en ökad förståelse för detta exempel, genom att titta närmare på begrepp som makt, globalisering, mänskliga rättigheter samt relation mellan stat och samhälle. Detta material baseras på rådande och aktuell litteratur i form av böcker och artiklar, samt två intervjuer med sakkunniga personer.Nyckelbegrepp i denna studie är makt, det globala civilsamhället, påverkan, feminism samt abortfrågan..

An open fitting is suitable for persons with sloping hearing loss and relatively good low fre-quency hearing. Sensory neural hearing losses often have this type of configuration. A large ventilation canal gives a greater feeling of comfort and less occlusion. The purpose of this study was to look at the hearing aid benefit of open fitted hearing aids. Self report question-naires were sent out to 102 patients who were given ReSound AIR during the year of 2006 in Uddevalla.

Bakgrund Förlossningsdepression, depression postpartum (PPD) drabbar omkring 13 procent av alla kvinnor under de första månaderna efter förlossningen. Depressionen påverkar inte bara kvinnans egen hälsa, utan också föräldraparets relation, och kan ge långvariga negativa effekter på barnets utveckling. Syftet var att belysa upplevelsen av förlossnings-depression i ett familjeperspektiv. Metod Denna studie har utformats som en litteraturstudie, 7 kvalitativa artiklar och 8 kvantitativa artiklar ingår. De databaser som har använts är PubMed, Cinahl och Psycinfo.

Hur fungerar Internet som politiskt verktyg i praktiken? På vilka sätt förändras förutsättningarna för politisk kamp med ökade möjligheter till oberoende medieproduktion och global distribution? Med ett tvärvetenskapligt förhållningssätt grundat i ett medie- och kommunikationsvetenskapligt perspektiv intervjuas representanter från den svenska miljörörelsen samt organisationer som arbetar för mänskliga rättigheter i Tibet. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att sociala rörelser arbetar i digitala nätverk där autonomi, decentralisation och flexibilitet är nyckelord ? precis samma organisationslogik som globaliserade företag arbetar under. Detta möjliggör en oberoende sfär för information och kommunikation som i sin tur leder till ett symbiotiskt förhållande med etablerade mediekanaler. Vi går därmed ifrån att vara ?konsumenter? till att bli ?användare? ? en radikalt förändrad maktrelation mellan producent och mottagare.

Purpose: During the last years Real Options have been established in many areas of the day-to-day business. Recent literature also tries to address Supply Chain problems with option theory, since an efficient Supply Chain increasingly gains in importance as a significant competitive advantage. This thesis tries to answer the question, if Real Options can mitigate the costs induced by the Bullwhip Effect as one of the major problems in Supply Chains. Methodology: The authors of the thesis used a deductive approach. Based on a theoretical model utilizing Real Option contracts and under the usage of a randomly created dataset the influence of the Bullwhip Effect on the company?s business and financial structure is examined and subsequently analyzed.

A plant's defensive ability against herbivore attack can be influenced by many different factors, one of them being domestication. During human selection to improve the yield of plants, the resistance against herbivore attack can have been lowered, due to a trade-off for use of resources between these traits in the plants. In this thesis I investigated the effect of domestication on resistance against herbivorous insects in cotton plants. I used different varieties and species of wild and domesticated cotton in three different experiments. A feeding assay was conducted, the mortality, development time and pupal weight of larvae of the Egyptian cotton leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis was studied. In a second experiment the preference of the root-feeding beetle Agriotes spp.

The cat is one of our most common pets. Understanding the reproductive physiology of the queen is important, not only for the knowledge of our domestic cats but also for wild undomesticated feline species, many of which have been reported endangered. Understanding the mechanisms behind the estrous cycle, ovulation and pregnancy is also important for handling the feral cat populations that are a problem in several countries. The purpose of this literature study is to look into the hormonal patterns of the reproductive physiology of the female cat, with focus on ovulation, pregnancy and pseudo-pregnancy, and from this information determine in which fields more research would be needed. The female cat is seasonally polyestrous in Sweden, meaning that she can have several estrous cycles during the breeding season but goes through a long period of reproductive dormancy during the darker months of the year. The queen is considered an induced ovulator, with copulation triggering the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland needed for ovulation.

Complete tumour regression is the optimal outcome of cancer therapies. There are however types of tumours that naturally regress. Most of these are benign, dermatological and have an early onset in life. This literature study aims to elucidate the mechanisms behind spontaneous tumour regression. The climate affects animal populations through several processes. These processes includereproduction, phenology and the success of hunting. By influencing the phenology of species theclimate also affects the way species interact. If a climate-induced phenology change promotes abasal species to bud earlier in the spring for example, this will affect the links to other species inthe food web due to a time lag in the tropic levels above. This dependence, that a predator has tobeing synchronous to its prey, is called the match/mismatch hypothesis (MMH).
