Skogsbränslebalansen i Mälardalsområdet : kraftvärmeverkens syn på råvaruförsörjningen 2010-2015
Denna studie har utförts på uppdrag av Skellefteå Kraft. Skellefteå Kraft är Sveriges femte största kraftproducent med kraftvärmeverk i Malå och Lycksele och bioenergikombinat i Skellefteå och Storuman.
Undersökningen avser Mälardalsområdet som här definieras som Stockholms län, Södermanlands län, Uppsala län, Västmanlands län, Örebro län samt Östergötlands län. Inom detta område bor 38 procent av Sveriges befolkning och här förbrukas 31 procent av landets totala energiförbrukning. Syftet med studien är att kartlägga utbudet och efterfrågan på biobränsle, med tyngdpunkt på skogsbränsle, inom Mälardalsområdet 2010 och om fem år.

Fossila bränslen har sedan de upptäcktes konkurrerat ut biomassa som den huvudsakliga energikällan. Framförallt i trafiksektorn har drivmedel som härstammar från fossil olja varit dominerande. The use of renewable resources is rapidly increasing in Sweden, especially the use of fuel pellets. Through pelletizing the energy content per volume unit is greatly increased and the pellets are more homogeneous with regard to moisture content, particle size and density compared to unrefined fuels like forest residues and chips. For further development of the Swedish pellet industry, the use of different assortments from lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia) is of particular interest, mainly because of its high volume production.
