Edward Said's book Orientalism (1978) is the most important reference point in the post-colonial theory and describes how the West is dominant over the Orient. There is a clear distinction between "us" and "the other" and the purpose of this study is that, from a postcolonial perspective, focusing on Said's theoretical concepts "the other" and "discourse", examining how two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds living in the same place, are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes. My questions to answer this are; ?what are the concepts of "the other" and "discourse" and is it possible to use these concepts to examine how foreign-born people are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes in a specific location??, ?who is "the other" in a place where there are almost as many native Swedes as foreign-born??, and ?how do these two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds perceive Norrliden as a place and what effect has that place had on their identity?? I have used a post-colonial philosophical ground and a qualitative approach, focusing on two different interviews with two men, living in Norrliden. In Norrliden almost 50% of the inhabitants are foreign-born were both of the interview-persons are feeling safe and secure.

At Flight and Systems test Saab AB, a post-processing software is used to process GPS data. A new software by the name GrafNav has been purchased and the purpose of this master thesis therefore became, partly to make a judgment regarding GrafNav?s ability to estimate position, velocity and accuracy, partly to if needed improve the estimate and finally find one or several methods to estimate the position and velocity accuracy. The judgment of GrafNav was performed partly by a comparison to the former post-processing software (PNAV) and partly by a comparison to the airplane?s inertial navigation system (INS).

This essay, Pictures from a death-bed, expands on the pictorial genre called post mortem portraits, a field with long history in the western society. A post mortem portrait is an artwork where the artist paint or photograph the model after her or his dead. My survey delineates to treat two specific pictures, one from the seventeenth century and one from the twentieth century. Both of them are portraits of dead boys on their death-beds, but the first one is a painting and the other one is a photo. By this survey I wanted to find both similarities and differentials between the pictures; if they were made by the same reasons, if you could see anything different between the portraits by children and by the portraits of adults, and finally, if there were any cultural or religious connections between the pictures and their existents.

Att föra en bra kommunikation vid designprocesser är nyckeln till ett lyckat designresultat. Vid designsituationer där designer och projektledare inte befinner sig på samma ort, utan istället cirka 60 mil ifrån varandra, så går det att påstå att kommunikationen är avgörande för utgången av projektet. I denna designprocess befinner jag, som designer, mig i Umeå medan min uppdragsgivare och projektledare är lokaliserade i Jukkasjärvi utanför Kiruna. Mitt uppdrag som designer är att i 3D skapa skisser för hur interiören ska se ut i ICEHOTELS kommande samarbete med Astronomiåret 2009. Den fråga som jag har valt att bearbeta är således hur designarbete på distans kan underlättas.Ett tält kommer att sättas upp under vintern 2008/2009 på älven nedanför ICEHOTEL i Jukkasjärvi.

Personlig integritet och övervakning är något som starkt berör våra arbetsplatser idag. Vi påverkas av den ständiga och kraftfulla teknikutvecklingen och vår personliga integritet berörs. Tanken med denna uppsats är att belysa personlig integritet och övervakning via Internet och e-post på en kommunal arbetsplats. Jag använder mig av den hermeneutiska ansatsen och där jag ser till mina fem respondenters tolkning och förståelsehorisont. Dessutom ser jag till min egen tolkning som jag har använt mig av vid bearbetningen av intervjumaterialet.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the satellite states of the former Communist bloc immediately departed on a journey towards democracy and market capitalism. Among the many tasks of the newly elected governments, one was to transform the paternalist Communist welfare state into a social system that would decrease the oversized role of the state, at the same time as protecting the citizens from the hardships ensued from the transition.I have studied the evolution of new welfare systems in the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, three countries generally agreed as the most similar and most successfull transition countries of the Eastern bloc. Gøsta Esping-Andersen's prominent typology of welfare regimes, consisting of the liberal, corporatist and social democratic regime-types, has constituted the theoretical basis of the analysis. Simultaneously, applying new cases to the typology implies an element of theory testing.The study shows that 40 years of Communism and partial isolation from the West has not prevented these three countries from developing welfare states fully compatible with those of Western Europe and the Anglo-Saxon nations and that all three of them in fact fall within the scope of the corporatist regime-type..

Det här projektet går ut på att skapa en effekt så att det ser ut som en olycka har varit framme på ett inspelat material. Syftet är att i första hand försöka skapa en liknande filmsekvens som i en redan producerad film men också att få förståelse för post produktions programmet Fusion. De tekniker som användes för att ändra det filmade materialet var att föra in bilder och skapa 3D-objekt och sedan använda 2D och 3D-tracking för att få de att sitta på plats. Resultatet blev en kort film som når upp till ursprungsmålen men som egentligen skulle behövt mycket mer tid för att bli riktigt bra..

The study is aimed at investigating the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj ?i?eks theories ofthe ontology of the subject, the crisis of our modern society and his views on how theology,especially Christian theology, can provide the answer for the threats to our society.My main object is the article Descartes and the post-traumatic subject (2008)where ?i?ek elaborates thoughts about the subject and our capitalistic society. To be ableto grasp these thoughts in full I have undergone an investigation not only on the writingsof Slavoj ?i?ek, but also on the philosophers to whom he owe much of his theories,such as G.W.F. Hegel, Friedriech Schelling, Karl Marx and Jaques Lacan.In the study I have shown how the subject is, according to ?i?eks psychoanalytictheories, decentered.

Personer som genomgått en traumatisk händelse befinner sig i riskzonen för att utveckla post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), som innebär en stor livsbegränsning och ett stort lidande. Dagligen möter hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal personer som ännu ej diagnostiserats och det är därför av vikt att kunna identifiera PTSD-symptom. Syftet med litteraturstudien var att undersöka samband mellan olika trauman och PTSD-symptom enligt diagnostiseringssystemet DSM IV. Studien grundades på en deduktiv ansats och resultatet bestod av 15 vetenskapliga artiklar som granskades. Resultatet behandlade DSM IV:s tre symptomkluster: re-experience/intrusion, avoidance och hyperarousal.

I dagens segregationsdiskurs läggs fokus ofta på de storskaliga miljonprogrammen. De människor som bor där beskylls ofta för att själva vara orsaken till segregationsproblemen. En vanlig uppfattning är att dessa människor genom egna val bidragit till de segregationsmönster vi har idag. Sällan belyses andra gruppers val som orsak till fenomenet. Miljonprogrammet uppfördes mellan 1965 och 1975 av den socialdemokratiska regeringen som en symbol för det moderna välfärdssamhället.

Examensarbetet är en litteraturstudie som handlar om att förebygga post-operativa komplikationer hos hund i samband med anestesi, symtom på dessa och hur de åtgärdas.Anestesi är ett reversibelt tillstånd av medvetslöshet frambringat för att kunna utföra operationer och diagnostiska tester. Det är viktigt att anpassa anestesin efter varje djur och ha kunskap för olika läkemedels önskade effekt och biverkningar. Vid val av anestesi bör hänsyn tas till olika faktorer, som till exempel ras, ålder, sjukdom och beteende.Problem kan uppstå i alla stadier av anestesi, från pre-medicineringen till uppvaket. Vanliga komplikationer är kräkning, regurgitation, krampanfall, excitation, dyspne, hypotermi och förlängt uppvaknande. Individuellt kan problemen innebära små konsekvenser, men tillsammans orsaka fara.

Syftet med examensarbetet var att ta fram ett webbaserat säljstödssystem åt Koneo i Gävle.Systemet skulle underlätta för säljarna i deras dagliga arbete med att samla information om kunder på ett ställe. Vidare kan de där redigera information, skicka e-post, ta fram olika dokument m.m. De tekniker vi använt oss av är ASP.NET, SQL-lagrade procedurer,JavaScript, CSS och VBScript. Joint injury (inflammation) or osteoarthritis is the most common cause of poor performance in the athletic horse. Osteoarthritis is the ensuing degeneration of joint cartilage due to inflammation/injury. The single most important factor in the inflammation cascade of joint injuries is interleukin-1 (IL-1). Until recently, these injuries have been treated with products like hyaluronic acid, cortisone and polysulphated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAG). Several studies have not been able to demonstrate a significant difference in the clinical improvement of joint injuries treated with hyaluronic acid or PSGAG and saline.

The post-modern western city is going through two central changes in the organization of paid labour. One is the switch from production of goods to production of services, and the other is the increasing rift between well-paid labour with permanent jobs, and temporarily employed workers with low wages. Both of these processes are rasified and gendered, and strike harder against women, young persons and people of emigrant background. The flexible capitalism creates an informalization of the economy, breaking with earlier regulations of the labour markets, in which workers also need to find informal strategies in their individual and collective struggles. In this paper, I search for these ?new? experiences of living and working in late capitalist society, by doing open interviews with three women of Latin-American origin, working without official permission (without documents) in the informal economy of Stockholm.
