Habitat preferences and reproductive success forthe threatened longhorn beetle Plagionotusdetritus

Plagionotus detritus is a threatend longhorn beetle that only exists at one site in Sweden. It is saproxylic and depending on recently dead coarse oak wood for its larval development. Trees at Djurgården, Stockholm that have been colonized by Plagionotus detritus has been studied to find out the habitat preferences of the species and to see what affects the density of beetles in a tree. The bark of some trees and wood from the breeding project at Nordens Ark has also been studied to find out what affects the species reproductive success. The reproductive success was measured in two ways, the larval mortality and the size of the hatching holes.

Evaluation of animal welfare education in primary schools in Lilongwe, Malawi

Animal welfare issues are not considered as high priority in Malawi, a developing country in south east Africa, due to problems affecting the human population. In Lilongwe, the capital city, education programs are used to increase the awareness of animal welfare issues among primary school children. A study was undertaken to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of animal welfare in primary school children as well as two different teaching methods for animal welfare, namely humane lessons (HL) and Animal Kindness Clubs (AKC). The gender perspective, in terms of differences in attitude towards and knowledge in animal welfare, was also evaluated as well as the link between domestic and animal violence. The study was performed in collaboration with Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA). A questionnaire of multiple choice character was handed out to 249 children aged between 9 and 15 from six different schools.

To answer these questions theory has been read about sponsorship and data has been gathered through qualitative interviewswith soccer clubs and sponsorship consultants.The work result shows that there are some general rules that the company should follow tosucceess when hosting a game.

Äldre invandrares kanaler för representation med fokus på föreningsliv

AbstractThe aim of this study was to highlight who represents elderly immigrants and apply the theory of social exclusion. We chose channels for representation that we found important in relation to this group. The first part is a study of available litterature of the subject. We found three main arenas: participation in elections, participation in associations and clubs and representation in political institutions. The findings showed a democratic deficit among elderly immigrants, which gave an indication of social exclusion from the political arena and from participation in associations.For the second part we decided to concentrate on the arena of participation in associations and clubs that represent the elderly and/or immigrants.

It appears that it has never been easier for the marketer to create and distribute advertising messages. The technical development has created new possible channels, which in addition to the traditional advertising media has resulted in consumers encountering loads of commercial messages every day. Unfortunately for the marketer, the overload of messages has contributed to an extensive advertising avoidance. This forces him to think outside the box in order to come up with attention-grabbing and innovative methods to reach out to consumers. This paper aims to examine if facilities for group exercise classes at fitness centres could be a potential advertising medium due to the unexpectedness of encountering advertising in those premises.

Kost och träning i sociala medier : Källa till hälsa eller ohälsa?

Unga vuxna tenderar att spendera mer tid på sociala medier än på någon annan daglig aktivitet, där det populäraste sättet att kommunicera är genom att dela bilder. Samtidigt har intresset för hälsa och fitness hos allmänheten ökat de senaste åren. Tidigare studier påvisar att ett ständigt fokus på hälsa och fitness kan leda till låg självkänsla och missnöje över sin kropp. Majotiteten av de tidigare studierna har fokuserat på de negativa hälsoutfallen med sociala medier och påverkan på människors hälsa. Syftet med studien var att ur en neutral synvinkel, beskriva unga kvinnors upplevelser samt påverkan av sociala mediers exponering av kost och träning.

Sweden's position in the UEFA rankings is a modest 23 rd place, behind nations such as Austria, Switzerland and Belarus. The economic climate in Sweden is often highlighted as a strong factor. When we started our study we agreed that this could be a major contributing factor to this relatively modest rank, but believed that there were also other factors that played a big role.

Är kommersiella strategier synonymt med affärsmässig eller idrottslig framgång?

Commercial strategies are becoming more common in an increasing number of sports - Swedish golf is no exception. Previous research shows that new opportunities for non-profit organizations, to assign parts of their operations to a limited company, do not have any economic importance. The supplementary question arises why more golf clubs nonetheless choose to corporatize its activities? Is the purpose of commercial strategies generally linked to business- or sport-related success? This paper, containing two studies, aims to create an understanding of the underlying drivers of commercialization, and furthermore to quantitatively demonstrate how commercialization is reflected within Swedish golf in terms of strategy and marketing. Swedish golf clubs were categorized as more or less commercial, and examined based on business-related variables such as communications, brand awareness and price discrimination, as well as sports-related variables as success factors and success indicators.

Genflödet från genetiskt modifierade grödor till vilda populationer

Tillämpningen av genetiskt modifierade (GM) grödor har varit utbredd över hela världen och har ökat markant sedan den första GM-grödan blev tillgänglig för kommersiellt bruk 1996. Sedan starten har det tillkommit mycket forskning kring risken för spridning av transgener från grödor till vilda populationer. För att en transgen ska kunna etableras i en vild population så måste tidiga generationer av hybrider överleva för att kunna återkorsas upprepade gånger med den vilda arten, det gör att det genetiska materialet från grödan succesivt reduceras i varje generation tills det att transgenen är det enda DNA från grödan kvar hos avkomman. För att denna process ska vara stabil krävs det en stark selektion för transgenen. Det här sättet för en gen att etableras i en population kallas för introgression och tros ha spelat en stor roll i växternas evolution.

Synchronizing migration with birth: an exploration of migratory tactics in female moose

Migration and giving birth are crucial decisions for animals during their life cycle, which may have lasting consequences on their population demography and fitness. Migration can entail a variety of possible effects for an individual, such as access to high quality food and reduced risk for predation. The moose (Alces alces) in northern Sweden is partially migratory and moose females are known to give birth to one or two calves. The synchrony between time of calving and timing of migration has not been compared before, especially in terms of energy maximizing and time minimizing perspectives, which may provide vital cues for fitness benefits of migration. I investigated effect of timing of birth and individual life history on distance, timing, stopovers and duration of 190 individually marked female moose that have been tracked for multiple years in ten different areas in northern Sweden.
