Skogsbruksplanen - ett hjälpmedel i vattenförvaltningsfrågor? : en intervjustudie
After the mandatory rules for clearing was removed in 1994, the clearing area has increased in Sweden. After the storms Gudrun and Per, the areas became planted with new plants, mainly spruce, but also other tree species. Storm areas are now being invaded by naturally rejuvenated birch in the tilling tracks. Since the birch often is initially growing faster than the spruce it is inhibiting the growth and is also damaging the spruce.
The purpose of this thesis is to study the new brush saw with chain and compare it with the conventional clearing saw, mainly in terms of performance and ergonomics. The results show that the new brush saw with chain is very good in almost all clearing operations compared to the conventional clearing saw.
The shift in forest and tree limits in Troms County - with a main focus on temperature and herbivores
To better understand how various factors affect the establishment of forest and trees around the tree line-ecotone, this study was conducted in Troms County, Norway. The altitude of different forest and tree limits together with the surrounding vegetation type were collected during August 2011. Comparisons of the collected data were made with previously collected data from the same sites conducted 1914 and 1915. On average the forest limit has expanded with 26 meters in altitude, however, an expansion is not statistically significant for the whole area. The tree limit has significantly expanded in altitude.
Betydelse av lövinslag, död ved och variation i träddiameter för artrikedomen hos småfåglar
Forest management contributes to the changes in forest structure by turning heterogenous forests of varied age into homogenous forests of similar age and thus affect bird species depending on different structures or habitats which are lost during forestry. In this report, a study was made to investigate how the amount of decidious trees, dead wood and variation in tree diameter affect bird diversity. The purpose of this study was to be able to give forest management guidelines to increase bird diversity. This study was conducted by investigating 65 transects in forests of different structure south of Linköping, Sweden. Along the 65 transects, birds were inventoried as well as the vegetation.
Hur påverkar bävern skogens värden?
The activities of beavers in forested landscapes affect both ecological and economical values. The creation of the dynamic wetland mosaic associated to beaver activities can even improve the quality of water and have been documented as an important landscape engineer affecting the environment for many species. The local office of Sveaskog in Skinnskatteberg is responsible for the management of large areas of the forests in the County of Västmanland. In this area one of several company?s goals are to create ten new wetlands in their own forests as a part of cooperation with the Swedish bird society and Swedish wetland association.
Biodiversitet av evertebrater på vegetativa tak
In a city sometimes conflicts arise between either to save the species-rich vacant lots where many species thrive, or to build new buildings. Green roofs can then serve as a refuge for plants and animals that have had their natural habitat destroyed or diminished. Today we know too little about green roofs contribution to the biodiversity in the cities. We also know very little about how various types of vegetation on roof can increase biodiversity and its ability to attract different species. The aim with this study was to examine how different types of vegetation on the roofs affect the biodiversity of the invertebrate and how species-composition and number of individuals differ between the roof- and groundlevel. This study has been carried out on Augustenborg Botanical Roof Gardens in Malmo, and in an area about 1.5 kilometers away from Augustenborg. Three different types of vegetation on the roof and ground floor were selected: sedum- ruderal and grass.
Does tree removal along railroads in Sweden influence the risk of train accidents with moose and roe deer?
After the storm Gudrun in 2005, the Swedish Transport Administration started clear-cutting of railroad corridors to reduce the risk of trees falling down on the tracks. Simultaneously, train accidents with moose and roe deer have become more frequent and the costs for consequent delays and repairs of engines are of growing concern. There is reason to assume that tree-clearance of railroad corridors may have contributed to an increase in number of accidents with moose and roe deer because the cleared areas provide attractive forage and thus may attract wildlife. The objective of my study was to investigate how clearing of trees affected the number of accidents with moose and roe deer. I compared deer-train collision frequencies before and after clearance of the selected railroads and compared these with uncleared control railroads in a BACI (before-after control-impact) approach.
Härdiga palmer för skandinaviskt klimat :
The final thesis ?Hardy palms for scandinavian climate? describes the family Arecaceae both from a general point of view, and with individual descriptions of seven different species that are known for their coldtolerance. The descriptions of each species is brief and the intention has been to give an introduction to some specific species known for their hardiness.
Seperate chapters discuss topics as hardiness, pests and other problems and a short instruction for growing palms on open land in scandinavian climate. Finally a short discussion about continued research on this topic and some conclusions ends this final thesis.
Granföryngring på tallmark, hur ofta förekommer det? :
This survey was made during the summer of 2004 and the spring of 2005, on commission
from the National Board of Forestry.
The aim of this report was to investigate how often Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst), is planted on poor Scotch pine (Pinus Silvestries) sites and if it affects the yield of Norway spruce? In order to investigate this, data from 29 stands witch had a lower site index than T24 was collected. The investigated stands were situated in the southern-eastern Sweden. In 20 plots in each stand, the highest tree, age, number of seedlings, site index and tree species per stand were measured.
Productivity of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in coastal areas of northern Sweden
Productivity of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) was
studied on 12 sites in coastal areas of northern Sweden. On each site, sample
plots were placed in adjacent Norway spruce and Scots pine stands with similar
ages in between. Basal area, tree height, Site Index, volume production,
simulated maximum mean annual increment (MAImax) and tree vitality were
compared for the two species. Average basal area at the time of measurement
was 30.4% larger for Scots pine stands than for Norway spruce stands. The
difference between the two species in basal area increment during the last 10
years was related to stand age.
Beståndsutveckling i stormskadade granbestånd
The storm Gudrun in 2005 led to massive windthow damage in forests in southern Sweden.
Since then there has been a growing interest in factors influencing wind damage in above all
Norway spruce (Picea Abies) stands. Although many other interesting areas still need to be
examined. In 2005 there where a lot of stands that suffered different degrees of damage, a lot of
these stands weren?t cut, but instead left to grow. The future development of these stands is
uncertain and the guidelines are unclear.
Klibbalens gödslingseffekt på volymproduktionen i ett blandbestånd av gran och klibbal : en simulering i Heureka
A secondary and a pioneer tree species can with advantage be included in a mixed stand to increase the use of sunlight. Nitrogen-fixing plants have been shown to increase the supply of nitrogen in the soil by, for example, litter fall. This deposition acts as a biological fertilization, which may be used by non-fixing plants. Alder is a nitrogen-fixing, pioneer tree species that loses its nitrogen-rich leaves late in the autumn. The aim of this study was to examine the effect on the total volume of production, when different proportions of nitrogen-fixing Alder were part of spruce stands.
Environmental variables determining the occurrence of Cladonia parasitica and Hertelidea botryosa, two boreal lichens confined to wood
Biodiversity is essential for human well-being and it is defined as the genetic variation within species and the variety of species and ecosystems. Biodiversity provides several ecosystem services which are necessary for human beings but there are different threats towards the
biodiversity. The biodiversity linked to the forest in Sweden are threatened, about 50 % of the red-listed species in Sweden are associated with forests. This is linked to the commercial exploitation of the boreal forest in Sweden which started 200 years ago. The forestry the last
50 years, with clear-cuts, have contributed to a fragmented forest landscape.
Maximerande av ekosystemtj?nster i urbana kulturmilj?er: En fallstudie om tr?dval i Pommerska tomten i Mariestad
The purpose of this work has been to explore what ecosystem services a small green area in an urban
environment can offer and whether specific trees can be used to maximize regulatory ecosystem
services in a cultural-historical environment. Additionally, it investigates whether there is any
difference in ecosystem services depending on whether these trees, or trees that better fit into the
cultural-historical environment, are used. Through simulations and comparisons with existing trees in
Pommerska tomten, Mariestad, Sweden, a pocket park within a national interest area, different
hypothetical tree planting options are analyzed and evaluated. To measure ecosystem services, the
website My-Tree, developed by the US equivalent of the Department of Agriculture, was used. By
inputting data about the tree, such as location, species, vitality, stem diameter, and solar exposure,
My-Tree calculates some of the ecosystem services the tree provides.
Sker rengöring av ögon, antenner och mun hos Odonata : Coenagrion larver med hjälp av borsten på framben och fötter?
Dragonflies are fascinating. The larvae stays larvae from a couple of weeks up to 5 years, it depends on the species (Hansen, 1981). The temperature, nourishment and time of the year also play a role for the growing factor for the larvae. Both Sahlén (1985) and Begon a.o (1990) say so. My report contains information about the branched setae on the front legs from the family damselflies (Zygoptera) and the species Coenagrion.
The major food trees of the Angola black-andwhitecolobus (Colobus angolensis palliatus)in Diani Forest, Kenya
The Angola black-and-white colobus (Colobus angolensis palliatus) is a subspecies of Colobus angolensis inhabiting fragmented forests in coastal Kenya and Tanzania. C. angolensis is regarded as Least Concern in the red list of IUCN because its populations are abundant. However, the populations of C. a.
