Food traceability system for Swedish origin food items : an assessment of the application ?våga fråga - få en bonde på köpet? from a farmer perspective
In June 2013 a debate concerning the consumers? right to a label of origin on food packages was held in the Swedish parliament (www, Riksdagen, 2014). The debate was sparked by some food scandals where labelling was falsely used, claiming something that was not true ? the horse-meat scandal, frozen strawberries infected by Hepatitis A, pork sold as beef, etc. These cases were not only wrong in terms of food safety, but also fraudulent and threating consumers? right to fair origin labelling.
Lantbrukarens inställning till skuldsättning och val av kreditinstitut : en fallstudie av expansiva lantbruksföretag
The agricultural sector is characterized by larger crop farms and more extensive livestockproduction. The efficiency improvement is partly a result from a stronger competition in theglobal market. The agricultural products need to be produced at a lower cost than competitorsin order to survive as a Farmer. The solution is larger firms that benefit from economies ofscale. This brings large investments that create a greater need for leverage and closer relationto the credit agency.
Swedish dairy farmers? interest in using price risk management tools : a study of correlating factors
The dairy market will change importantly in the coming years. The quota system, which has regulated the European dairy production, will disappear in 2015 and the European dairy market will then be importantly affected by the volatility characterizing the dynamic of world prices. Besides this, the global demand of dairy products is expected to increase due to the growing world population. Farmers in countries such as the U.S. and New Zealand, when compared to Swedish Farmers, show greater familiarity and experience with risk management tools.
Soil fertility status and Striga hermonthica infestation relationship due to management practices in Western Kenya
Striga hermonthica, a parasitic weed, has long been believed to be correlated with the
declining soil fertility status. However scientists have recently come to question this statement
since some recent studies have shown contradictive results. To investigate whether soil
fertility status and infestation of Striga hermonthica were correlated and the impact of it were
caused by Farmer management, 120 Farmers in Western Kenya, where Striga hermonthica
infestation is prone, participated in this study. In three districts with two sub-locations each,
Farmers answered a structural questionnaire and identified two fields, one with high and one
with low soil fertility. These fields later came to be the basis for this study and soil were
therefore also sampled from them.
Are changes in heart rate and/or arborisation of vaginal mucus useful parameters for detecting heat in heifers? :
The milk production per cow has increased considerably during the last 50 years and due to the breeding for higher milk production also brings decreased reproduction efficiency. In a Swedish study 1996 it was shown that on average only half of all estruses were detected. Every time a Farmer fails to detect oestrus it costs the Farmer about 1200 Swedish crones and the need of means of detecting oestrus is therofore large. With this study we wanted to investigate if heart rate respectively crystallisation of vaginal mucus (arborisation) could be useful means of detecting oestrus. We monitored two oestrus cycles in four heifers.
Tillsyn av djur på bete : betydelsen av lockgiva och regelbundna tider
During natural conditions cattle live in large herds, which are divided into subgroups of 10-15 animals. Humans have held cattle for over 9000 years. Today we mostly have cows for milk and meat production during more or less intensive forms. Most of the Swedish cattle have the opportunity to graze during the summer time. This partly arises from the Swedish Animal Protection law which stipulates that cattle must have the option to be outside and graze, also partly because it makes it easier for the Farmer.
Supply & value chain analysis of onions in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is a developing country situated on Africa?s horn. Ethiopia ranks 173rd on United Nations human development index where the least developed country ranks 186. About 85%
of all Ethiopians are employed in agriculture. Onion is one of the basic ingredients in the Ethiopian cuisine and thus an important crop.
Factors affecting crop insurance decision : a survey among Swedish farmers
Farmers are constantly facing changes, and the exposure to risk requires monitoring these changes. Financial risks, institutional risks, market risks and production risks are the different risk categories that the Farmers face. Production risks stems from factors the Farmer cannot affect or is beyond his control. The crop?s output is the basis for the primary income of agricultural operations, which is why it is important for Farmer to manage their production risk.
A tool to reduce the consequences of production risks is crop insurance.
Utvärdering av ett silotorksystem för spannmål utrustat med omrörare :
The aim of this study was to evaluate the stir drying method, for drying of grain during Swedish conditions. The evaluation was done during the harvest year 2004, on four farms with stir driers. The driers were evaluated for their energy consumption, design, stirring effectiveness and how much time the Farmer has to spend on every tonne of grain. A comparison was also done with conventional Swedish high temperature driers. Totaly six batches of grain from stir driers were examined, mostly winter wheat, but also barley and wheat.
Underhållskostnader för tröskor :
Costs of maintenance on combines are a subject of interest thus it constitute a large
investment and cost for the individual Farmer. Therefore it is important to have up to
date knowledge and the right facts to be able to do reliable calculations on one of the
largest investments for a Farmer.
The aim of this study was to compare costs of maintenance on combine/threshingmachine
with the computer program for advising environmental issues in agriculture,
STANK. Interviews took place and data were collected by handing out questionnaires to
20 Farmers. A similar study conducted by Neuman (2003) investigated costs of
maintenance and compared these with STANK. The results of this study have also been
compared and examined related to data from SLA - Skogs och
Lantarbetsgivarförbundet.
The result shows that 18 out of 20 combines were given a higher cost of maintenance
when using STANK compared to the numbers in this study.
Strategier vid generationsskifte : ekonomiska implikationer för olika intressenter
A large number of farms within the agricultural sector will shortly be facing a point of time where the farm will be transferred to the next generation. The grantor can choose between totally 8 different strategies to transfer the farm, of which purchase, gift and a mixed form of these are the most common. During 2007 almost 10 000 transfers of agricultural estates occurred in Sweden and the expectation for the coming years is that about 15 000 estates will be transferred each year. By the time a transfer is about to materialize there are usually several stakeholders that in one way or another is trying to influence the outcome of the transfer. The choice of transfer method affects the conditions and possibilities for compensating the siblings.
Riskfaktorer för Staphylococcus aureus i mjölk och på has hos mjölkkor :
Mastitis is the most common disease of dairy cows. Mastitis can be painful for the dairy cow and causes economical losses for the Farmer. These losses are due to decreased milk production, more working hours for the Farmer, treatment costs and possible costs due to culling of the cow. The udder inflammation, mastitis, is often caused by bacteria infection. One of the most common bacteria found to cause mastitis in Sweden is Staphylococcus aureus (S.
Djurskyddskontroller ur lantbrukarnas perspektiv - från kommun till länsstyrelse
On the first January 2009 the official animal welfare control were transferred from the municipalities to the County Administrative board. With this transition, some changes occurred for those who work as animal welfare inspectors. The aim for this study was to examine Farmers' view on the transition between the municipalities and County Administrative board, in order to compare the two authorities. I have also studied the Farmers view about animal welfare inspectors' knowledge, both theoretical and practical. The questionnaire also included questions about Farmers' view on animal welfare legislation.
Livet mellan husen : ett utvecklingsförslag för Disagården
The open air museum of Disagården is situated in the Old Uppsala parish,
Uppsala municipality, are projected to portray a double row village, before
the land enclosure, on the Uppsala plain during the 1860s and 1870s.
Disagården operates under the County Museum of Uppland and serves as an
exhibit of Uppland's farming culture during the late 19th century. However, an
open-air museum is a complex institution where many interests are linked
together. Disagården aims to simultaneously portray an historical
environment while offering broad public appeal.
The Disagården open air museum was inaugurated in 1931 and consists of
relocated buildings that together form three farm complexes "Gränbygården",
"Skuttungegården" and "Bärbygården".
The thesis explores how the close surroundings of a typical farm in
Uppland looked during the 1860s and 1870s. This historical depiction has then
been applied to Disagården in a development suggestion creating a
foundation from which Disagården can structure the close cultivation of the
different farms. The basis of the development program has primarily been
compiled through archival and literary studies but also through on-site visits
and interviews.
How did the concept of open air museums start and what were the ideas
behind the concept? Which external influences affected the situating of
cultivations and buildings? Which crops and species were present on the
farms in Uppland during the specified time period? What was the relation of
the different structures to each other? Which organizations had influences on
the Farmer's household of the Uppland plain? The thesis attempts to clarify
the answers to these questions.
The influences affecting on the Farmer's household in Uppland were
probably numerous.
Kons fertilitet : kostnader och åtgärder
To get a good economy on the dairy farms the fertility control of heifers and cows is a crucial
factor. It is also important to know which key parameters that should be tracked.
In this work well established routines for heat detection have to be applied. When the dairy
Farmers use technical aid in estrus control it is important not to forget that technical aids can
not replace the human eye. Approximately 50 % of all opportunities to inseminate are missed
because clear signs of estrus have not been displayed and/or recorded.
The cattle fertility has been declining over recent years. During the same time the cow?s
proceeds have increased, consequently applying a higher pressure on the cow and the
manager.
