Phosphorus in agricultural soils around the Baltic Sea : comparisons of different laboratory methods as indices for phosphorus leaching to waters
Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea is a serious problem. A major contributing factor is diffuse losses of phosphorus (P) from agricultural land in surrounding countries. In order to estimate P losses, environmental monitoring of small agriculture-dominated catchments is being carried out in most of these countries. Evaluation of the risk of P leaching to waters is usually based on chemical tests originally developed to quantify the amount of soil P available for plant production. The tests are performed in different ways in the different countries and a number of different extraction agents are in use.

Wetlands play an important role in the ecosystem. They reduce the impact of flow flux in the drainage area, acts as upholder of biodiversity, as an esthetic and recreational component in the landscape and they have the ability to reduce nutrients such as nitrogen, and help preventing Eutrophication in costal areas.The number of wetlands in Scania have, due to the intensified agriculture been reduced to maximize the area suitable for crops.However since the mid 80th the consequences of this has been acknowledged, and many wetlands have been restored.This master?s thesis aim to see what impact this development have had on wetlands in Scania over the last 60 years. And also look at some of those factors important for the efficiency of nitrogen removal in wetlands. During the process a detailed manual for inventories of this sort was created.The material used to execute the inventory of wetlands where aerial photographs over Scania from the 1940th, 1980th and 2000.
Inga miljövinster med ekologisk produktion? : Lägesrapport över den svenska jordbruksdebatten
Organic agriculture is financially promoted in Sweden by special environmental support and as consumers we are all encouraged to buy organic food. At the same time scholars at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences claim that organic farming does not provide any environmental benefits. The main criticism is that organic farming has lower yields than conventional, which means that more land is needed to produce the same amount of food as in conventional farming, leading to deforestation and loss of biodiversity. As for climate change, the critics claim that the significantly higher productivity in conventional crop production compared to organic, releases surplus land, which could be used for bio-fuel production and thereby replace the fossil fuels. The critics also claim that organic farming causes higher nutrient leaching than conventional.
Koloniträdgårdar och näringsläckage : En studie inom Drevvikens tillrinningsområde i Stockholm
Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka om koloniträdgårdar läcker näringsämnen till Drevviken i Stockholms län. Underlaget till studien kommer från en kvalitativ intervju med tre representanter från Miljöförvaltningen i Stockholms stad samt litteraturstudier.Resultaten visar att det föreligger problem med att kolonister använder sig av egna avloppslösningar vilket inte är tillåtet enligt arrendeavtalet. Stockholm stad står fast vid att indraget vatten fortsättningsvis inte ska få förekomma trots att ansträngningar gjorts från Skarpnäcks stadsdelsnämnds sida med att utforma bra avloppslösningar för kolonistugor. Dessa avloppslösningar arbetades fram under två år genom projektet Möjlighet att anordna avlopp inom delar av Listuddens koloniområde. Den enda åtgärd som idag tillämpas är att arrendeavtalet ska följas eftersom problemet med näringsläckage från kolonistugor då inte längre skulle vara ett problem.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient but a surplus could lead to Eutrophication. Furthermore,
the minerals used to produce the mineral phosphate is a non renewable resource.
There are in other words several reasons to reduce the leakage of P and the agriculture is one important area to attend. The aim of this work has been to investigate if carbon-rich arable soils content contain more P than arable soils with low carbon content. Moreover it has been calculated if the carbon-rich soils could pose a risk of P leakage by comparing their delivery of P with the plant uptake. The work has consisted of compiling the results from former gathered and analysed soil samples of 130 Swedish arable soils.
The fractions of P considered are water soluble P (Pw), ammonium lactate-extractable P (P-AL), hydrochloric acid-soluble P (P-HCl), organic ammonium lactate-extractable P (Porg-AL) and inorganic ammonium lactate-extractable P (Porg-HCl).

As we can see the fisheries development depends on the interaction between ecology, state of production, politic and also social factors. In Sweden the fishery politic has changed over the period of the study. In the 1970: s the main politic focus was on the fisheries progress, expansion and rationalization. The State in Sweden took a vast part in this development and gave economic support.
Metodik för bestämning av åkerdikens status : fallstudie av ett dike i Munktorps socken
Agricultural drainage ditches are links between fields, lakes and oceans, having the potential to transport e.g. sediment and nutrients. When in a good condition, drainage ditches can act as sinks for e.g. phosphorus and sediments and prevent Eutrophication downstream.
The aim of this study was to determine the condition of one agricultural drainage ditch and to come up with suggestions for appropriate measures. The aim was also to determine
which of the ditch?s properties that were possible to evaluate visually, which processes they represented as well as which properties required complementary physical analysis.
This in order to contribute to the work of developing a method for determining the status/condition of agricultural drainage ditches.

Eutrophication is an environmental problem that affects more than ten percent of Swedish lakes. Excess nutrients increase the growth of algae, and cause major problems in the ecosystem through oxygen-free bottoms, fish kills, and at worst dead bottoms. Agriculture accounts for 44% of human emissions of phosphorus to lakes and rivers. Leaching occurs of particle bound phosphorus and of dissolved
phosphate. The amount of phosphate in the soil solution that may be leached is partly due to the prevailing pH in the soil solution.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the relationship between phosphate solubility and pH was affected by liming.
Freshwater pearl mussel as indicators of Swedish streams - a comparison between freshwater pearl mussel and biological quality elements
The freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) is a large freshwater mussel. Because of its sensitivity to human impact, such as Eutrophication, acidification and alterations of hydromorphology, the species is considered as a robust indicator of stream water quality and biodiversity. Moreover, due to the species complex life cycle, including a larval stage on the gills of salmon and trout, and sensitivity of early life stages, regeneration is often used as an indicator. The freshwater pearl mussel is also used in the expert judgement of status classification of benthic invertebrates according to the European Water Framework Directive.
The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the freshwater pearl mussel as an indicator for Swedish streams. It was made with two types of
association analyses.

Emissions of insufficiently treated wastewater, mainly blackwater (i.e. wastewater from toilets), contributes to the Eutrophication of lakes and seas. At the same time, blackwater is a fraction with a low content of heavy metals and, after sanitization, it can recirculate plant nutrients to arable land using the liquid composting treatment method. Liquid composting means that organic material is degraded under aerobic conditions. For sanitization, the blackwater needs to be treated together with energy-rich complementary material.
Dynamisk massbalansmodellering av fosfor i Östersjön
During the past few years a vast amount of research has been done to increase the understanding of the complex ecosystem of the Baltic Sea. Modelling and simulations are important tools to increase knowledge of the system. A suitable model must be simple to use and the parameters and variables needed in the model must be easy to access.In this paper a dynamical mass-balance model, CoastMab, which is validated for smaller coastal areas, has been used to predict concentrations and transports of phosphorus in three large coastal areas - the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Gdansk and the Gulf of Riga. CoastMab uses ordinary differential equations to regulate inflow, outflow and internal flows. To reflect seasonal variations in temperature and different types of flows the model has a temporal resolution of a month.
Nitrogen flow in Scania : substance flow analysis on a regional level
In this thesis, the flows of reactive nitrogen (Nr) in Scania were investigated and quantified. The thesis was also intended to form a basis for comparison between the urban nitrogen flow and other flows of nitrogen within Scania. The management of nitrogen in society has disturbed the natural nitrogen cycle. This is linked to a series of environmental problems such as Eutrophication, acidification, global warming and smog.
The method used was Substance Flow Analysis (SFA) for Nr. For calculation and flow charts Scania was divided into three subsystems; air, water and society.

with energy recovery". The purpose of this thesis was to investigate if incineration
with energy recovery could be motivated through an environmental perspective as
an alternative to landfilling of solid waste in Santiago, Chile. The study was
performed with Life Cycle Analysis as a theoretical base.
In Santiago, situated in the thirteenth region of Chile, Región Metropolitana, lives
6,5 million inhabitants. The major part of the solid waste produced in the region is
landfilled on three different sanitary controlled landfills situated outside the city
center.

Bornsjön är Stockholms viktigaste reservvattentäkt och kan tillgodose staden med dricksvatten i flera månader om Mälaren skulle slås ut. Det är därför viktigt att Bornsjön håller en god vattenkvalitet. Under de senaste åren har vattenkvaliteten avseende totalfosfor i Bornsjön försämrats. Hög belastning av fosfor kan leda till övergödning i en sjö. När en sjö är övergödd uppstår ökad syreförbrukning som kan leda till syrebrist.
