The goal of this thesis is to design an attachment between a duct and a pod. A pod is what could be compared to an outboard engine for larger vessels. The pod is placed on the outside of the ship?s hull and can rotate 360 ?. A duct is a large steel ring that can be placed around the propeller on the pod to increasethe propulsion force of the ship in lower velocities.

 We have chosen to write our thesis within a transport company. The work was carried out at DHL activities in Uppsala. DHL is one of the leading transport companies worldwide. Our interest lies in more efficient and advanced transportation and terminals, as globalization and new trends require effective solutions.The aim of our work is to explain the need for information technology applications in road haulage and associated terminal operations. Furthermore, we analyses terminal and applied information technology.

Denna rapport är en del av examination till Högskoleingenjörsprogrammet i maskinteknik på Karlstads universitet. Examensarbetet gick ut på att ta fram ett nytt koncept för en tailcutter åt Valmet AB Karlstad som är en viktig del i en mjukpappersmaskin vid upp- och omstart av maskinen. Men det skall även ge studenten färdigheter som kommer till nytta i det senare arbetslivet. Till kraven som ställdes på det nya konceptet hörde att den skulle vara billigare än dagens konstruktion, gräns för maximal nedböjning på 5 mm, att konstruktionen skulle vara enkel och pålitligt samt att den skulle vara utformad så att den skulle passa in i små utrymmen och olika montageplatser. Det gjorde arbetet mångsidigt och intressant.
