Kostförändring och/eller fysisk aktivitet vid fetmabehandling

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a Dietary change, physical activity or a combination of both gave the best result when treating obesity, concerning weight loss and BMI. Excessive weight and obesity are today a big health-issue and it is estimated that 10 % of the men and 12 % of the women in Sweden have a BMI over 30, i.e. are suffering from obesity. The corresponding number for children is 3 %. No one can say for sure what causes obesity but there are many theories.

In Scandinavia, capercaillie are often associated with pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) in winter, with pine needles as the main diet. Few Dietary studies have been conducted in Sweden and winter diet is subject to little debate. The interesting thing is that this "pine specialist? is also found in spruce (Picea abies) forest habitats where pine is scarce or unavailable. In many studies outside Sweden (primarily Central Europe) spruce is regularly observed in the winter diet, but I have found no reports on the selection of the diet in spruce forest areas in Sweden.

Elitorienterares kost- och vätskeintag inför och under en tävlingshelg - Uppnår orienterarna rekommendationerna för optimal prestation?

För att en elitidrottare ska prestera optimalt under träning och tävling, är det viktigt att hon/han har en adekvat kosthållning. Särskilda näringsrekommendationer för idrottare har framarbetats. Bland annat har Svenska Olympiska Kommittén utarbetat en kostpolicy för elitidrottare, som belyser vikten av näringsintag före, under och efter fysisk aktivitet, samt hur dessa intag bör vara sammansatta näringsmässigt för att idrottaren skall kunna prestera och återhämta sig optimalt.Syftet med detta arbete var att se hur kost- och vätskeintaget såg ut bland elitorienterare före, under och efter tävling, i förhållande till gällande rekommendationer. Även livsmedelsval samt deltagarnas resonemang kring kost- och vätskeintag i samband med tävling studerades.Studiens urval baserades på 15 elitorienterare (8 män och 7 kvinnor) som deltog i orienteringstävlingar i Ronneby under påskhelgen. Orienterarna fyllde i en mat- och vätskedagbok under totalt fyra dagar, två dagar före respektive under tävlingshelgen.

Today the feed for gestated sows is often composed by high energy and low Dietary fiber grain products such as wheat. Denna kartläggning ingår som en del i ett större forskningsprojekt, Idefics (Identification and prevention of Dietary and Lifestyle?induced Health Effects in Children and Infants) som har tagits fram för att förebygga övervikt och fetma bland barn mellan 2?4? och 6?8 år i Europa. Syftet med vår kartläggning är att utifrån ett stickprov bestående av 100 barn ur Idefics population kartlägga livsmedelsintag. Detta som underlag för deras kommande intervention där två av nyckelbudskapen är att öka konsumtionen av vatten samt frukt och grönsaker. Även skillnader i livsmedelsintag mellan interventions? och kontrollgrupp, flickor och pojkar samt förskole? och skolbarn studeras.

The purpose with this literature study was to investigate the possibilities for improvement of forage protein in dairy cows with focus on feeding strategies and conservation of forage protein. The utilization of forage protein in dairy cows is often not that efficient as it could be. The feed crude protein consists of both true proteins and non protein nitrogen. The digestion of proteins in the rumen depends on the protein degradation rate and the ability of the microbes to synthesize microbial protein. The microbes need a balance between carbohydrates that provide them with energy and proteins that are degradable in the rumen.

The black-and-white colobus monkeys (Colobus angolensis palliatus) of Diani forest, Kenya : behavioural responses to habitat fragmentation

The loss of habitat is one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity today. Consequences to a species inhabiting fragmented habitats include: group size changes, altered diets and altered foraging behaviours. In my study I observed Colobus anlgolensis palliatus troops living in the forests of Diani, a highly developed area on the Kenyan coast. I looked for differences in behaviours between three troops inhabiting pristine forest patches and three troops inhabiting highly degraded forest areas. I used focal animal sampling with instantaneous sample points.

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas (GHG) that contributes to the global warming. One of the largest sources of methane is livestock, preferably ruminants which alone counted for 30% of the total agricultural anthropogenic methane emissions in the year of 2000. The reason to why ruminants are such large contributors of methane are that the gas is produced in the rumen by enteric formation and leaves the animals by belching, exhaling or by the excreta.Diets high in concentrates can result in a lower emission of methane. Also diets with a high content of starch, such as alfalfa-grass, have a methane-decreasing. It is profitable to reduce enteric methane formation since that form of methane is unavoidably lost.
