As the world´s population increases and people's living conditions are improving, larger areas are needed for houses as well as food production. This means that
new areas are exploited and that people, livestock, blood sucking insects and wild animals are forced to live close together. In combination with the global warming,
leading to extreme weather such as floods and storms, this allows both new and old pathogens to emerge. The number of "emerging infectious diseases", EIDs, has increased in recent years and many of them have their origin in poor, tropical countries. Moçambique is therefore considered to be a high risk area for EIDs.
Schmallenberg virus, SBV, was discovered in 2011 as an "emerging infectious disease" in dairy Cows in Germany.

The trend in milk production is similar in Sweden and across the world; the farms are getting fewer but increasingly bigger. The costs for hiring workers are increasing, which results in more Cows per animal keeper. Sensors can then be a great tool for keeping track of animals which need special attention. With a reported decreasing fertility, sensors that can detect oestrus even at low levels can be especially helpful in bigger herds to pinpoint the Cows that may be in oestrus. The number of farms with dairy Cows that install AMS, Automatic Milking Systems, are increasing, and that also increases the need for sensors to control milk quality and composition when there is no visual control of the milk by a milker before milking starts.For the sensor data to be useful you have to have software designed to analyze and interpret the data to get relevant information that the farmer can use.
The effects of two light programs on sleep in dairy cattle
Sleep is a vital part of life. Even so a lot of the mechanics regarding sleep is unknown. The dairy cattle of today live a stressful life, as their high milk yields forces them to eat large amounts of feed and spend a great portion of the day ruminating. Do they have time to get enough sleep? Which factors affecting the need of sleep in dairy cattle are largely un-known.

Neospora caninum is an intracellular parasite that was first recognized in dogs in
1984. The parasite is now one of the most commonly diagnosed infectious causes
of abortion in cattle word wide. N. caninum is transmitted to cattle in two ways.
They may be infected from eating food contaminated with oocysts from a
definitive host or they may be infected in utero from an infected mother. The
infection is transmitted efficiently from cow to her offspring and this can occur
for generations.

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan parasite causing diarrhoea in many different animal species including cattle and man. It is an important enteric pathogen in neonatal calves and it is the second most common pathogen found in diarrhoeic calves in Sweden. Subclinically infected adult cattle have, in international studies, been shown to shed a low number of oocysts in faeces and this has been recognised as a potential source of infection for new-born calves. The detection methods used for diagnostic purposes are based on microscopic investigation of faecal smears. These methods have a fairly low sensitivity and samples from subclinically infected cattle have to be concentrated before analysis.

The reason why I choose the subject ?Warts on teats of Dairy Cows? was because the
herd I work with has big problems with skin-complaint on teats and udder.
So I found it interesting to try to find the reason why the Cows look like they do and
even to find a way to relieve the trouble.
The examine work included both a literature research, an experimental test,
concerning a comparison of different teat sprays and also an inquiry-research about
the occurrence of warts in practical herds in order to collect as much facts as possible.
Three companies, selling different types of teat disinfectants, were willing to sponsor
the teat dipping experiment. The aim of the experiment was to see if any special
disinfectant had more pronounced healing effects on teat warts. The date for the
experiment was 18th December 2004 to 22nd January 2005, which was going to be 5
weeks.The experiment was carried out in the herd of Ola and Eskil Carlsson in
Fjärlöv, Hässleholm.
The three compared teat spray chemicals were; Nova Viri Sun, Nardosept, and
BlockadeTM. These chemicals were compared to one control group, which teats were
treated with the ordinary chemical normally used in the herd, i.e.

The purpose of this literature study was to investigate the possibilities to improve longevity and stayability of beef cattle with breeding. The breeding goal for beef breeds is to produce animals with high capacity for growth and good feed efficiency. Longevity and sustainability are two important features to include in the breeding goal. If longevity is increased each cow can produce more calves and the number of female calves used for recruitment can be reduced and only the best heifers need to be selected for breeding. The benefits of longer life is that it lowers the costs of recruitment animals, it increases the number of young animals that become available for slaughter, and it increases the proportion of high producing animals in the herds.
Survey Of Genes Of Escherichia Coli Causing Bovine Mastitis With DNA Microarrays
Background: Mastitis in dairy cattle is a common ailment worldwide. A cause of mastitis can be bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Mastitis is not a deadly ailment and sometimes the dairy Cows show no symptoms but if certain virulence genes are present in the bacteria that cause the mastitis, the bacteria can be transmitted to humans and cause severe diseases. The potential presence of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) in particular would be a major concern for human health.Aim: The aim for this study was to analyze the presence of virulence genes known to be present in E.coli strains isolated from dairy Cows with mastitis in Sweden.Method: A Qiagen BIO ROBOT EZ1 was used to purify DNA from 90 bacterial cultures. A panel of virulence genes were amplified and biotinylated from the purified DNA by PCR and an E.coli based DNA microarray was used to detect presumed virulence genes in E.coli.Result: There were no samples that had all the genes traditionally used to classify E.coli as EHEC or potential EHEC.
The use of artificial insemination in dairy farms in urban/peri-urban Kampala, Uganda : a study of knowledge, attitude and practices
Uganda is one country with fastest growing populations in the world and with more than 25% of the population living in poverty. There is a rapid rural urban migration with increasing demands for food for low income earners especially in these areas. One way to mitigate food insecurity is to increase milk and meat production efficiency, and thus reproductive performance of Cows is crucial for good production. A well-documented strategy for improving dairy cow productivity through faster genetic improvement is to breed dairy Cows using proven semen via artificial insemination (AI). AI has been used in Uganda for over 60 years but only less than 10 %, a small population of the country?s herd has been bred that way.
The aims were to study knowledge, attitude and practices factors influencing cow fertility results on dairy farms around Kampala using AI and to propose ways of promoting increased use of AI in Uganda.

The dairy cow?s ability to resume estrus after calving and to conceive is affected by their metabolic status after calving. For high yielding Cows there is a high risk that the feed intake will not be sufficient to cope with the increased energy demands after calving, and the cow will end up in a state of negative energy balance. Energy balance can be measured in various ways, for example by body condition score or by plasma concentration of several metabolic hormones and metabolites. After calving, endocrine pathways stimulate tissue mobilization; insulin signaling is blocked, the concentration of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and leptin decreases, and the concentration of growth hormone (GH) increases.

Nytt ventilationssystem till djurstallar :
There is two dairy farms in Sweden with ability to be opened on both long sides, one outside
Hjo and the other one, Brandstadholm, north of Sjöbo. When there is no measures and results
or not enough literature about natural ventilation and especially on this kind of air inlet, makes
my tests very interesting not only on Alnarp, but among other companies.
I would like to find out if there is any air movements direct on the Cows, how high/low
temperature, air humidity, light intensity and noise standard inside the barn. Does
Brandstadholm fulfil the rules and regulations when it comes to climate inside the barn? Could
this system become the new dairy barn instead of the conventional barns in Sweden?
I am going to focus on the animals environment, after all they are the one who is going to
spend the most of the time in the barn.
I used five electrical loggers distributed inside the barn to measure the temperature and one of
the loggers measured the air humidity, every 15th minute. One logger were placed on the
outside which measured both temperature and air humidity.

Farmers are required to make sure that cattles basic needs are met, but still every year cases of neglect occur where the farmer has not complied within the animal welfare law and regulations. The aim of this study was to investigate how cattle are affected physically and behaviourally by neglect in the form of underfeeding, starvation and lack of sanitation, which animals are most vulnerable to the impact and what prospects they have to recover. The study was conducted as a literature study and the results show that these types of neglect have a large impact on the cattle welfare. Underfeeding and starvation causes physical changes leading to reduced milk production, reduced muscle mass, impaired immune function, poor reproductive performance and changes in rumen microflora leading to decreased number of microbes and pH change. Physical changes due to the lack of sanitation consist of increased vulnerability to hoof diseases and mastitis, burns, and increased sensitivity to temperature.
When does the protein profile in milk normalize after antibiotic treatment against clinical mastitis?
Concentration of protein in bovine milk is one of the most significant milk quality parameters, to a large extent determining the price for milk to the producer. Mastitis is a common disease among dairy Cows, negatively affecting not only milk yield but also milk protein composition. Milk from mastitic Cows tends to have lower cheese yield, negatively affected processability properties and sensory quality, due to changed protein quality and composition. Poorer milk protein quality would have an economically negative impact on dairy industry. Only few studies have investigated the short term effects of mastitis on milk protein composition.
