Reformen, visionen och modellerna - En fallstudie om den offentliga reformens påverkan på stora investeringar i Stockholms stad

This thesis is based on a case study of the City of Stockholm. The study aims to explore the effects on the City's large investments caused by the public reform. Furthermore, the question concerns the character of the impact and if it will affect what type of investments that will be prioritized. The theoretical background is based on Brunsson's ideas about political organizations shifting towards corporate nature, and Almqvist's interpretation of New Public Management (NPM). Moreover, models explaining public management reform, and the main components of corporate shifting, are used.

Blandstad : en studie av dess sociala aspekter

Throughout the history, the theories which have shaped our cities have varied from time to time. We have gone from a City development characterized by spontaneousness, where commerce and people side by side shared the space, into a function-based planning where people and functions are being increasingly separated. Regardless the forms of planning the City design causes implications for those who live there when the physical environment controls were we live, work and meet. In today's society where `sustainability ' has become a watchword the current community planning needs to be questioned so we, in the best possible way, can meet future changes. Searching for new planning strategies is part of this and in this essay the term `mixed-use´ will be investigated and analyzed in terms of its social aspects.

Hållbar utveckling- En textanalys av miljöpolicy i lokal och nationell kontext

Sustainable development is a concept that has been interpreted in a multitude of ways in different contexts. This essay argues that the discourse of "ecological modernization" has strongly influenced the way in which the concept of ?sustainability? has been constructed in Swedish environmental policy. This interpretation of the concept of sustainability offers the possibility of combining economic growth with ecological sustainability which stands in contrast to the assumptions of Deep Ecology and Green Theory. The aim of this essay is to explore how the concept of sustainability is being formulated in environmental policy both on a national level and in the City of Malmö.Considering these issues in a specific context, this essay focuses on City planning that is as an important instrument to promote urban sustainability both on national and local levels.

GULLBERGSKAJ ? PARADIS? En exposé över drömmarnas kaj

The purpose of this graduate thesis is to illustrate what could be theeffects of urban renewal carried out in a too hasty manner, the pointbeing that there could be features which have (yet) not been identifiedand therefore are lost if the planning of the City is not given theadequate amount of time and resources.Through a case study located at the wharf of Gullberg (Gullbergskaj)the significance of urban fringes and areas without too strict of aplanning are highlighted. Some guidelines to successful and considerateCity development are somewhat suggested. The survey is mainly based on two types of sources: contemporaryphotography and interviews with a number of people who are allresidents or tenants at the Gullbergskaj. Their testimonies regardingGullbergskaj and their use of this particular environment are used to drawconclusions of the qualities, which are not the typical cultural-historicalqualities but rather a quality defined by the user (of the quay), held by thissection of the Göta älv shoreline. This thesis is also concerned with the potential impact on the qualities ofGullbergskaj, was it to be the object of City renewal. The results of the study are compared to debating articles published in thenewspaper Göteborgs-Posten for a wider understanding of Gothenburg as atrademark, and the public opinion regarding the City planning related toCentrala älvstaden..

In a time where many Asian metropolises experience an expansive development new urbanconditions are created and the already existing disappears or being replaced. Asian cities develop ata pace that is unprecedented in our history and which, through a western perspective can seemharsh. By focusing on an urban complex in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province ofSichuan China, the study asks; is it possible to see this rapid urbanization from another perspective? The study examines the local and global dimensions of Raffels City, and how concepts such asnostalgia and authentiCity, related to the City, can be understood in an urbanization that is so markedby massive demolitions. The study shows that these concepts can be expressed in several ways, andthat an awareness of them does not necessarily control the view of the City..

Utformning av riktlinjer för trafiksäkerhet i mindre stadscentrum : fallstudier i Bollnäs och Sandviken

Several cities have implemented various projects to improve traffic safety in City centers.During 1970s and 1980s the City centers changed as the suburbs grew and large shopping centers were located outside the center. At the same time, several projects were initiated with construction of pedestrian streets and restriction of traffic in the center. In year 1994,shared-used areas were introduced in Sweden and these areas are often used in center environments. In Sweden, municipalities are responsible for integrating security in public places and in comprehensive plans and detailed development plans. The National Board of Housing,Building and Planning is the authority for administrating planning issues and develop general guidance about planning. Traffic is one of their key issues, although today there are no concrete guidelines from the National Board of Housing, Building and Planningfor the design of traffic safety in City centers.Traffic safety in City centers affects many people because the City center is a public place. It is therefore important that there are current guidelines available that are helpful for changes and improvements in traffic safety in the City center. The purpose of this report is to formulate guidelines for planning City centers from a traffic safety perspective.

Planseparerad spårtrafik i Göteborg

The City of Gothenburg has an urgent need to upgrade its public transport. The capaCity of its light rail transit (LRT) has reached maximum capaCity within the inner City limits years ago. The construction of an underground metro will be very expensive and time consuming due to the soft clay beneath the City. The apparent need of developing another type of mass rapid transit (MRT) is urgent. An elevated metro have turned out to be a success in Greater Vancouver, but is it possible for the system to operate well in Gothenburg with its narrow streets and current land use; will its route coexist with the current LRT or will the noise disturb people too much?.

Nedläggningar och nyetableringar. En studie av hur folkbibliotekssituationen förändrats i Göteborg under 90-talet med hänsyn till stadsdelsnämndsreformen.

The purpose of this masters thesis is to examine the arguments that are being used when closing and establishing peoples libraries. During the 90:ies, in the community of Gothenburg, 4 public libraries were closed and another 3 public libraries were opened. A possible reason for this change lies in the reform from the City Committee that split the community of Gothenburg into 21 pieces; all with one centrally appointed political Committee. The library activity has since the reform was implemented got worse in some areas, foremost in the already neglected City sections, and better in some areas, which where able to establish new libraries. Argumentation analysis indicates that the arguments used at closure where mainly economical and neither the number nor relevance and validity of the arguments where good.

Utformning av hamnområdet i Arvika : stadsbild och offentliga miljöer

The harbour in Arvika is closed down and the industry that has been established in the area is now beeing wound up. A deepened comprehensive plan for the area is under progress in the municipality. The intentions are for instance that the harbour should be integrated with the City and that Arvika is facing a lake should be more apparent from the City center. The harbour should also contribute to a more attractive City. These intentions have hence been the starting point of my undergraduate theses, which has resulted in a proposal on how to develop the harbour. During the process I have analysed the City image, how the area is used today and the public places in the City centre.

En annan stad är möjlig! : En studie om rätten till staden och urbana sociala rörelser i Hamburg

The right to the City has lately become the rallying cry for many urban social movements all over the world to challenge neoliberal planning, gentrification, the privatization of urban commons and growing spatial and social gaps in City and society. This senior essay studies urban social movements that in different ways advocate the idea of the right to the City. The term right to the City was coined in the late 1960s by French urban theorist Henri Lefebvre, who promoted the idea of the City as a common, a space belonging to everyone. The right to the City is not ?a return to traditional cities?, but ?a right to urban life? (1996:158).This study focuses on the City of Hamburg.
