Tollarsjuka hos Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever : en sjukdomsbeskrivning
In the dog Breed Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (NSDTR)
several dogs suffer from joint pain and possibly pain from the
muscles. This diffuse disease is called Immune-mediated Non-
Erosive Arthritis in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
The disease is most likely of autoimmune nature where the etiology
still is unknown. The musculoskeletal symptoms of stiffness and
shifting lameness are intermittently seen. Some dogs also have
dermatological changes and some dogs suffer from pain when
opening their mouth.
The study included 20 diseased and 20 healthy NSDTR. The purpose
was to describe immune-mediated arthritis in NSDTR based on
symptoms, results of analysis and effect of treatment.
Among the diseased dogs 65% had serum positive for antinuclear
antibodies by indirect immunofluorescense (IIF) ANA-test.
Tidsstudier i kalvuppfödning :
Swedish agriculture stands in front of big changes the whole time. As a milking producer you have to adapt and develop the company to these changes and find the best solution. This potential is easy to find if you compare your company with other similar companies. Labour cost is the biggest cost in milking production after the cost for food. Today it is rather easy to measure how many hours per cow different system of cow houses needs, but we do not know so much about how many hours it takes to Breed a calf.
To learn more about the labour time with the calves during the first time after the calf was born, I made time studies on five different farms with calf hutches, automatic milk system, large calf boxes, and smaller calf boxes with teat buckets.
Diversitet hos jordlöpare (Col: Carabidae) i hävdade strandnära gräsmarker :
Diversity of ground beetles (Col: Carabidae) in managed riparian grasslands.
The carabid community in moist seminatural grasslands was studied at three different sites in mid-Sweden. Pitfall trapping was carried out during six weeks in spring and early summer 2003. Eight transects, each containing seven pitfall traps, were placed in three different management regimes, either late or continous grazing, or meadow.
The species composition was analysed by ordination analyses, i.e. DCA and CCA.
The use of artificial insemination in dairy farms in urban/peri-urban Kampala, Uganda : a study of knowledge, attitude and practices
Uganda is one country with fastest growing populations in the world and with more than 25% of the population living in poverty. There is a rapid rural urban migration with increasing demands for food for low income earners especially in these areas. One way to mitigate food insecurity is to increase milk and meat production efficiency, and thus reproductive performance of cows is crucial for good production. A well-documented strategy for improving dairy cow productivity through faster genetic improvement is to Breed dairy cows using proven semen via artificial insemination (AI). AI has been used in Uganda for over 60 years but only less than 10 %, a small population of the country?s herd has been bred that way.
The aims were to study knowledge, attitude and practices factors influencing cow fertility results on dairy farms around Kampala using AI and to propose ways of promoting increased use of AI in Uganda.
Septisk tenosynovit i kotsenskidan hos häst : en retrospektiv studie av 21 hästar
Septic tenosynovitis involving the digital sheath is a relatively common problem in the horse and the prognosis has been considered as poor. However, there are only few studies confirming this. The purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge about the prognosis for septic tenosynovitis in the digital sheath.
The literature indicates that half or a bit more than half of the treated horses will return to previous use. The recommended treatment is debridement of the wound, lavage and sometimes application of drains and broadspectrum antibiotics. The prognosis is considered as worse when the infection is established.
Fodersammansättningens betydelse för tillväxt hos häst :
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect on growth of foals on two different diets, either a forage-based diet or a diet containing approx. 40 % concentrate. The report also includes a review of the pertinent literature on the effects of diet on mares? milk and growth of horses. The hypothesis of the study was that a forage based diet will result in a similar growth pattern as a diet including more concentrates if the diets contain the same amount of energy, crude protein, lysine, calcium and phosphorous.
Scenarier för rekrytering av ridskolehästar år 2020
It is important to ensure and develop the Swedish model for riding schools, since the pupils at a Swedish riding school learn both to ride and to handle horses. There is a pronounced problem of stagnation and in some cases a reduced demand in several of the equine industry sectors including Breeding with decreased coverings. The aim of this study was to cast light on how representatives from the horse industry looks at riding schools and their recruitment of horses in the next five years. The research issue was ?Will there be difficulties regarding horse recruitment in 2020 and in that case, what are the consequences??
The results of this work consist mostly of material from a workshop on how the riding school will be affected by reduced Breeding in the future.
Brunstvisningsförmåga hos SRB- och Holsteinkvigor
Oestrus in dairy cattle has changed over the last decades, the duration has decreased and the intensity of oestrus has declined. A possible explanation can be their high and increasing milk production. Heifers ability to show oestrus is probably not affected to the same extent. The aim of this study was to estimate and compare oestrus duration and strength in heifers of the Swedish Red and Holstein Breeds. Standing oestrus has been the primary oestrus sign during many years.
Hästar i skrämmande situationer : en jämförelse mellan hanterad respektive fri habituering
In connection with riding and handling of horses, many accidents that can cause severe injuries to both horses and humans are existent. The cause is in most cases that the horse is frightened. The horse's fear also affects its usefulness and it has been shown to have adverse effects on the horse's welfare. To increase safety and improve the welfare of both humans and horses, it is important to find appropriate training methods to reduce the fear of horses in frightening situations. This experimental study compares handled habituation to free habituation.
Threats and opportunities for the survival of the Yangtze finless porpoise
The Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaorientalis), is a small freshwater cetacean which has recently fallen dramatically in number. It is an endemic species for the Yangtze River and unless drastic action is taken, it risks the same fate as the now functionally extinct Yangtze river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer). Threats to the porpoise are diverse but they have in common that they are caused by man. Development of the river has been made to supply a growing human population with food, hydropower, and to reduce the risk of flooding. These changes have resulted in a degraded habitat for the porpoise.
Klosjukdomar hos hund : en litteraturstudie och en fallstudie i den Svenska Riesenschnauzerpopulationen
Various problems with nail disorders have been noticed in the Swedish population of Giant Schnauzer, but the frequencies of these problems are unknown. This could be due to the fact that bad nail quality has several differential diagnoses and lack of diagnostic criteria and diagnostic codes for nail disorders. The main purpose of this study is to review different types of claw defects and diseases of the nail bed in dogs, and to classify and evaluate the proportions in the Swedish Giant Schnauzer population.
The nail is a specialized part of the skin. The quick will strengthen and protect the third phalang against the surrounding.
Bakre skallgropens form hos hund : en studie av occipital hypoplasi hos hund
Chiari type I malformation is a condition in humans characterized by a small
posterior cranial fossa, downward herniation of the cerebellar tonsils, foramen
magnum overcrowding and disturbances of cerebrospinal fluid dynamics.
Syringohydromyelia is often seen in patients with Chiari type I malformation.
Syringohydromyelia is characterized by fluid-filled cavities in the spinal cord.
This causes damage to the nervous tissue in the spinal cord. In recent years, a
condition similar to Chiari type I malformation has been recognized in dogs. It has
mostly been seen in Cavalier King Charles spaniels (CKCS). The condition seen
in dogs is usually called occipital bone hypoplasia.
The aim of the study was to examine whether there is a difference in the shape of
the caudal fossa between CKCS, small bred dogs with a similar head shape and
dogs with a normal head shape and if occipital bone hypoplasia is related to a
head shape with a steep back of the head. Other aims of the study were to examine
the crowding of nervous tissue in the foramen magnum in each Breed group, the
extent of syringohydromyelia and to what extent the malformation had caused
neurological signs.
Sculls from dogs on autopsy were divided in halves and the position of the
cerebellum compared to the level of the foramen magnum was studied.
Hereditär nefrit hos bullterrier i Sverige :
Bull terrier hereditary nephritis is caused by a mutation that leads to an inadequate synthesis of collagen type IV, which is an important component in the basement membranes. The inheritance of the mutation is autosomal dominant in bull terriers and progression to renal failure takes variable time, from several months to ten years.
Proteinuria is the first clinical sign of the disease and the diagnosis is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy of renal tissue where typical ultrastructural changes in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM), thickening and multilaminar splitting are found.
This study was performed in order to find out the occurrence of hereditary nephritis in bull terriers in Sweden through examination of urine samples and renal tissue and comparisons with how the disease is described in the literature. Urine samples from 76 Swedish bull terriers were collected and examined for proteinuria.
Populationsstruktur och genetisk analys av exteriöra egenskaper hos svensk ardenner :
The purposes of this study were to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for conformation traits in Swedish Ardenner, a heavy draught horse, and to investigate the inBreeding status of the population. Additionally, a Breeding scheme proposal was created, based on the results achieved in the study.
The data studied were obtained from the Swedish Horse Board and from the Swedish Ardenner Association. The data included 1632 three-year-old horses, mainly mares, and 356 stallions, judged between 1986 and 2005 at conformation shows. The traits studied were type, head-neck-body, legs, walk and trot at hand, total score and height at withers.
Studier av koppar i mjölk : en prooxidant med negativa effekter på mjölkkvaliteten
The taste of the dairy product is probably the main factor determining consumer?s dairy products choice. Consequently it is of great importance that the product tastes good and as expected every time. Off-flavors in milk can be caused by for example oxidation of the milk fat. Since copper is a prooxidant, a high copper content in the milk can cause oxidation.
