The aim with this masters thesis is to investigate how gender is presented in Swedish picture Books, in order to give librarians and other actors in the field knowledge about what kind of Books they supply impressionable children with. I investigate if and how the changes concerning gender-equality in the Swedish society during the last 25 years are reflected in childrens literature, and compare how men and women are portrayed in four Books from the early 1980s with four Books from the 2000s. My study is delimited to three aspects of character formation, introduced by Maria Nikolajeva: description of psychology, actions and relations to other characters. It is carried through by consultation of Yvonne Hirdmans theory of how men and women are held apart and that the man in this relation constitutes the norm as well as Nikolajevas list of typical male and female characteristics. By reading and interpreting the chosen Books, I analyse both text and pictures.

Teknik i bilderböcker

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to see how technology is presented in different fictional picture Books that are available in preschool. Six fictional picture Books that have connection to technology in picture and text have been analysed. In order to show how technology can be made visible in fictional picture Books, the relation between picture and text has been analysed through a technology perspective. Furthermore, the pictures and the texts have been analysed separately in order to show what they show respectively in terms of technology. The fictional picture book has a potential to be a basis for making technology visible in preschool, which is a step in a new direction.

In this essay there will be four text Books from grade 1 studied, the first one are from the year 1976 and it will be going forward to the year 2012. The aim of this study is to see how the genders are depicted and represented, as well as what roles the genders are given. I do also want to see if there is a notable change in this over time. I will be doing a study based on the quantity of the contents, and I will also be doing a critical discourse analysis. The result of the study showed that there were more gender-based constructions that referred to women in all of the four Books, which indicates that women are represented more often in these reading Books. It is most common to portray the genders in their stereotypical roles, which again are present in society, but sometimes these roles are depart from what?s present in society.

Other news during this time is Bookshops on internet. We found this development interesting and therefore decided to contact the four companies as well as six libraries to find out what they thought of the new situation.

In primary school reading-Books in Swedish language is something that students come across early in school and have done ever since the 1800s. After World War II there have been major changes in society. 1962 there was a school reform where the school turned into a nine-year system of compulsory education. "Låtom oss enligt gammal bömisk sed kasta ut dem genom fönstret!" : Historieläroböcker ur ett berättelseperspektiv

This thesis deals with the question of how and to what degree Swedish history Books for schools changed between the early 20th century and the 1960s. The theoretical foundation for this study is a perspective which treats historical accounts as narratives, bringing meaning and orientation to the present. According to this perspective, historical accounts may be divided into four different types of narratives, traditional, exemplary, critical and genetical. The basis for this division is how the narratives use the past to make the present understandable. The following conclusions are reached:That Swedish history Books for schools have changed less, and in a moore gradual way than those dealing with general history. There is a growing use of genetical narratives at the expense of mainly exemplary ones.

The purpose of this thesis is to study how children's librarians in public libraries use non-fiction Books in their work to promote reading. My research questions are: What methods do children's librarians use för promoting non-fiction Books? Are there children who can gain more from non-fiction Books than other children do? Are there any differences in working with fiction and non-fiction Books? To answer these questions I have interwieved five children's librarians about their methods, attitudes and thoughts on non-fiction Books. The result shows that all of the librarians use non-fiction when it comes to promotion reading but not to the same extent. Some hardly use it at all, mainly because the schools that they are serving demands fiction Books when practicing reading skills. while others use it but in less extent than fiction, as a way of separating the library reading from school work either because they want to keep the experience of reading in the library apart from school work or because they find it more efficient to do so.
