This masters thesis concerns the professional knowledge of the librarian. It is a comparative study where two major ma-gazines in library press, Biblioteksbladet and DIK-forum, is compared between the years 1990-2000, in relation to the theories of professionalization and the associations to the union. The study focus on showing the differences and similarities between the two magazines according to how they interact from the subjects education, wages and status. The study is conducted from two questions: - Which are the central differences and similarities in the description of the librarian profession in the two magazines, from the perspectives of wage, status and education? - In what way do the two magazines reflect the theories of professionalization? To give a wider perspective of the librarian profession, there is also a historical chapter with an explanation to the making of the librarian profession..

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the performance of queries that is expanded before translation in comparison with only translation of the queries using a bilingual dictionary, and also to see if the number of terms that was used to expand the queries was of any importance i. e. if many terms from a thesaurus helped or destroyed a query. To answer these questions i used two online thesauri, Rogets thesaurus and Merriam-Webster Online and one printed bilingual dictionary, Norstedts English-Swedish dictionary. Even though the number of examined queries is too small to draw any definite conclusions, the results suggest that expanding using a general thesaurus may have a negative effect on the queries.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how public libraries in Norrbotten provide multilingual media and how the commitment is legitimized. In January 2014 there was a change to the guidelines for the International Library?s service for providing multilingual media. The responsibility for the provision of this service was also changed. The result shows there has been different ways of implementing the guidelines in practice; this has led to inequalities in the local library service.We have assembled data through qualitative interviews with five different public libraries in the north of Sweden.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how students who study with Problem-based learning PBL in a distance learning course perceive the support from the university library. I first went into adult education, PBL and distance studies, one at a time, and then took a look at the combination of problem-based learning in distance studies. During the investigation, I conducted five interviews using a phenomenographic method to understand how the students perceived the support they received from the university library. The university library gives a lot of support but what I noticed while I was writing was that it is difficult to reach the students with the information regarding the help that is available to them. I give some example on how to develop the support and find that the students have a wide range of different needs for support from the library depending on their individual situation, social context, academic ability, location and course of study.

Syftet med den här studien var att inventera möjligheterna för kommunala verksamheter inom Skellefteå kommun att stänga av ventilationen vid varningssignalen Viktigt Meddelande till Allmänheten. Inventeringen skedde med hjälp av enkäter som sändes till ett stort antal kommunala verksamheter såsom; förskolor, skolor, äldreboenden, badhus och bibliotek. Resultatet visade att kunskap om alarmsignalen Viktigt meddelande till allmänheten var låg. Några förslag på hur säkerheten kan förbättras, ifall en olycka inträffar, är givna i rapporten. Ett av förslagen som framkommer är att öka kunskapen om hur ventilationen stängs av.

I detta arbete undersöks effektiviteten hos Androids medföljande metoder för att uppnå beständigt tillstånd. Undersökningen baseras på ett egenutvecklat verktyg för att mäta de olika metodernas effektivitet, med avseende på tid för att spara ner och läsa in tillståndet samt hur mycket utrymme det sparade tillståndet tar upp i sekundärminnet. Resultaten från undersökningen visar att de olika metoderna presterar olika bra beroende på tillståndets storlek samt om tillståndet mestadels består av text eller av nummer. Den metod som generellt är mest effektiv är Javas Serializable. Framtida undersökningar skulle kunna komplettera den genomförda undersökning genom att också utvärdera effektiviteten hos metoder som tillhandhålls via externa bibliotek..

When the Tranemo library moved to new localities in 1991 there were also some changes made to make the library more user-friendly. The purpose of this essay is to see how a useroriented change can be done and how it has been perceived by members of the library staff and the library users.This is done by the following means:l) interviews with members of the library staff,2) a questionnaire to the users in Tranemo,3) a comparative questionnaire to users of the libraries in Skara and Lerum.The comparison was concentrated on how the library presents its material. The result of this comparison shows that even though there is a difference among the three libraries, the difference is small and it is impossible to say for sure that it has anything to do with the changes that have been done. The interviews and questionnaire in Tranemo give a positive picture of that library..

The purpose of this Masters thesis is to study students perception of the services that the library staff provides and the library staffs opinion of the students perceptions. With the concept service we mean the treatment, the attitudes and the qualities that exist between the library staff and their users. Our purpose is also to examine how the users experienced services quality. Our survey was conducted at an academic library with questionnaires to both students and library staff. We analysed the result of the survey by using three theories by Lundmark, Keen and Grönroos and Monthelie.

This is a master thesis about the reconstruction of Bibliotheca Alexandrina. With a hermeutical approach utilizing literature review and interviews it examines how the library have come into existence, and what the Swedish efforts have been to help the project along. Using a mainly structural perspective, the major factors examined are world politics, Egyptian society and library values. Detta kan göras på flera olika sätt men denna rapport behandlar endast ett av biblioteken för bildmanipulation i PHP, nämligen GD-biblioteket.Syftet med denna rapport var att hitta eventuella styrkor och svagheter i detta bibliotek gällande bildmanipulation. Detta har gjorts genom att försöka skapa, för webben vanlig funktionalitet så som exempelvis tumnaglar, beskärning och vattenmärkning och sedan dokumentera resultatet.Resultatet av testningen visade att all testad funktionalitet gick att åstadkomma och slutsatsen som drogs av detta var att GD-biblioteket är ett bra val för någon som vill manipulera bilder..

The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to see how public libraries have adopted the new e-book readers and how the libraries think the e-readers will affect them in the future. There are three different theories in this study which are used to see how the e-book reader influences the libraries as an innovation and as a remediation from the paper book as well as its evolution. The authors have used four qualitative interviews where they have tried to find the most relevant librarians for the purpose. It was found that all the libraries in the study think that they need to learn about the e-reader and its functions to be able to understand users? needs, but they haven´t agreed if they should have the e-reader as a library loan.

The purpose of this Bachelor thesis is to examine how user-friendly the OPAC of the Märsta public library is considered to be.Theoretical basis are HCI and Allwoods definition of usability. Issues are: Is the OPAC suited to its task? Is the OPAC user-friendly? How well does a user accept the OPAC? and What degree of competence is shown by users of the OPAC? The source material consists of six interviews in the form of .avi files. The method I have chosen is qualitative semi-structured interview form. The result is that, based on Carl Martin Allwood?s defini-tion and with exception for the using of help-resources, the usability of Märsta?s library OPAC can be considered less good..

Syfte med arbetet är att undersöka hur lärare, i de tidigare åldrarna, arbetar med skönlitteratur och elevnära texter. Vi har undersöka hur lärare väljer texter till eleverna och vilket samarbete de har med bibliotek och bibliotekarie för att finna passande litteratur. Vi ville också ta reda på vilket syfte lärare har när de använder skönlitteratur i sin undervisning.  Undersökningen bygger på intervjuer som har genomförts med lärare och sedan kategoriserats utefter de svar vi fått. I resultatet kommer vi fram till att det både finns möjligheter och en del hinder när lärare ska arbeta med skönlitteratur. Elevers eget intresse, hemmiljö, samt vilka resurser som finns till hand har betydelse för lärarens arbete.

The study's aim is to create an understanding for the question why Sweden in 1921chose to create its own classification system for public libraries instead of adapting e.g.the Dewey-system which - at this time - was internationally we11 spread. It examines thesocial changes which proceeded the creation of the Swedish Library Association (SLA)in 1915 and discusses in depth the work of the committee appointed by SLA to createthe classification system. Special interest is also given to the relation between SLACSand the Dewey-system.The study shows that the main influence on the codttee's work was the formerSwedish tradition of classification practice. This is a thesis on the Intranet use in the European Parliament. We investigated the use from a multilingual point of view, but also from a communication perspective. What we wanted to know was how a multilingual group, with presumably different computer skills, in the organisation handle the Intranet information. What are the positive and negative effects of a multilingual information exchange over an Intranet? To find out, we sent a questionnaire as an e-mail attachment to all members of a chosen committee and their assistants.
