In southern Sweden, Beech (Fagus silvatica) and spruce (Picea abies) are two species with similar demands on soil properties. With increased global warming and high acid deposition the future may bring larger areas were the two species are overlapping, competing for the same soil. The aim of this study was to compare spruce and Beech concerning distribution, cultivation and soil properties. From available data comparisons were made between spruce and Beech forests in Sweden. Soil analyses were made on samples from Beech forest in southern Sweden, with and without natural regeneration of spruce.

During the early Middle Ages Beech forests (Fagus sylvatica L.) spread out over large parts of southern Sweden. They had a crucial role in human survival for hundreds of years. For various reasons, the Beech forest area has decreased since the 1600s. Spruce planted on former Beech forest land was the primary reason for the decline during the second half of the 1900s, which made many worried about the future of the Beech forests and led to a Beech forest act in 1974. This study describes the background to the Beech forest act based on parliamentary official documents.

During the summer of 2007 I was employed by Högestad Christinehofs Förvaltning AB. My main task was to make an inventory of giant trees at the estate. Högestad and Christinehof,which with their total possession of 13 000 ha of land is the biggest estate in Scania. A giant tree is a tree with a diameter in breast height more then 1 meter. Trees of these dimensions are registered by Swedish authorities. Landowners with a giant tree on their property can receive a subsidy for cutting trees that are in competition with the giant tree.(Levenskog, 2007) Giant trees are important for biodiversity in the landscape and there are important habitats for different insects, birds, bats, lichens and funguses.

Femsjö is a small parish situated in Hylte municipality, Växjö diocese. The parish has a total area of 8230 ha of which 5000 ha are covered with forest. There have not been any large industries in the parish offering work opportunities for the inhabitants, so they have had to generate income from their land and the forest. Instead of going to the bank to get a bank loan the people of Femsjö parish went out in to the forest and harvested trees for timber and extra cash revenue. Production of pine tar and potash were two other ways that the residents of Femsjö parish could earn extra money for the household in order to keep starvation away.

In this study I analysed how burning affects sprouting ability and survival of oak (Quercus robur) during the first season after a burn in southern Sweden. The study consisted of two separate field tests; in the first, two 300 m2- plots in western oak dominated forest were burned to analyze the fire behavior and the immediate mortality of oak and Beech seedlings defined as individuals (> 20cm of height). At the end of the season almost 50% of the oak seedlings had resprouted while the Beech seedlings had 100% mortality. An attempt to investigate the effect of the burn of artificially sown acorns was totally ruined by wild boar grouting before any conclusive results could be seen. In the second test the resprouting ability of oaks of varying diameters (average BHD 7-9 cm, range 2-42 cm) was examined one season after a prescribed burn in southeastern Sweden.

?Development of Norway spruce, Douglas fir Beech and Scots pine with a larch shelter wood? is a report written by Per-Olof Magnusson. The thesis is a compulsory part of forest engineer program at ?Skogsmästarskolan?, SLU, Skinnskatteberg, Sweden. The purpose of this report is to describe and evaluate an experiment with hybrid larch (Larix x eurolepis) as shelter wood, and different tree species growth and survival depending on the density of the shelter wood. The experiment is conducted by southern Swedish forest research centre, faculty of forestry, SLU in Alnarp. The hybrid larch ought to be an interesting alternative to birch (Betula sp.) as shelterwood on suitable sites in southern Sweden.

This article deals with the woodlands as a biological cultural heritage and how it is taken care of in the protected woodlands in Skåne, in the south of Sweden, especially the deciduous trees which is dominated by Beech. High biological values have emerged as a result of grazing and different kinds of forestry. The protected woodlands have been ripped of its cultural influences which changes the biological values on which the original reasons for protection was founded..

The aim with this study was to investigate mortality in older respectively younger Beech stands (Fagus sylvatica), the different types of dead wood in the forest and the availability of coarse woody debris (CWD). The research was carried out in previously managed and seminatural stands in Biskopstorp and Frodeparken, located north of Halinstad in Halland,Sweden. Data were collected from 22 stands with at least 50 % Beech and with a minimum age of 5 1 years, ranging in size from 0,67 to 19,9 ha. A transect was placed in each stand, in which the diaineter on both dead and living trees with a minimum diameter of 50 mm was recorded. On seven to 13 dead trees, depending on the size of each stand, decomposition stage, primary and secondary cause of death, amount of fungi and the type of the dead wood was noted.

Restrictions in nature conservations are increasing the influence of forest management. Nobel broadleaved forests are more influenced than other forests, because they are considered to be more valuable than other forest types in Skåne. There has been a lack of knowledge about the amount that is set-aside for nature conservation and what types of forest that is concerned. These are the main questions to be answered in this thesis. Moreover has the timber quality been compared between set-aside and non-set-aside areas since it affect the financial conditions for the forestry in nobel broadleved forests. The last asked question deals with the financial consequences of set-aside.

The report is a project in cooperation with the Swedish toy company Playsam. The assignment was to design a new toy to their range of products, a pull along toy in shape of a snail with a mechanical function. The research phase contains studies and analysis of the company, its identity, product range and its customers. The research phase includes all the information needed to complete the project. A number of concepts were presented for evaluation by the company.

Tidigare utförda servicebulletiner och luftvärdighetsdirektiv på flygplanet SE-KOL finns nedförda och redovisade i handskrivna dokument. För att på ett enkelt och smidigt sätt kunna ta fram status avseende SB och AD har innehållet i handskrivna originalhandlingar överförts till ett digitalt system i vilket utförda åtgärder blivit överskådliga och sökbara. Rapporten beskriver det överföringsarbete som legat till grund för den digitala listan samt det granskningsarbete som gjorts mellan utförda åtgärder och originaldokument från luftfartsmyndigheter och tillverkare, för att fastställa SB/AD-status för flygplan SE-KOL.Utifrån tidigare utrustningslistor, datalistor och tekniska dokument har en uppdaterad utrustningslista sammanställts med ökad överskådlighet samt sökbarhet, ur vilken information om flygplanets fortlöpande utrustningsstatus kan tas fram. Utrustningslistan som skapats är det underlag som senare tänkt användas vid överföring av flygplanets utrustning till ett bättre uppföljningssystem..

Det här examensarbetet gick ut på att förbereda en import av ett flygplan av typen Beechcraft King Air 200. När ett flygplan ska importeras och svenskregistreras för att användas till kommersiella operationer i Sverige måste intressenten gå igenom flygplanets tekniska bakgrund. Den informationen är till för att försäkra intressenten som köpare och den svenska myndigheten Luftfartsstyrelsen om att planet har sköts väl och är i luftvärdigt skick. Utifrån nationella och internationella regelverk utformades en lista med krav som Luftfartstyrelsen i Sverige kräver att intressenten ska visa upp för att godkänna importen. Med denna lista som utgångs punkt samlades information in från berörda organisationer och företag, angående flygplanets bakgrund.

Lack of dead wood is the main cause of decaying or loss of populations for many forest species. To increase the amount of dead wood is a prerequisite to maintain biodiversity in forests of northern Europe. In summer 2006 the recreation area Klåveröd, at Söderåsen in Skåne, Sweden, has been inventoried for high stumps (snags) of Beech, (Fagus sylvatica). The result of the inventory has been compared with data of the real estate and forest management directories from the owner, region Skåne. The results have also been matched with the results from an inventory of saproxylic beetles in 2005, performed with windowtraps on selected snags both in the area and the adjacent national park Söderåsen. 594 snags were found on 747 ha.

Objekt för undersökningen är en nyplantering av bok på en mindreskogsfastighet i sydöstra Blekinge. Bok och ek, som är de viktigaste ädlalövträden för den biologiska mångfalden, intog i dessa trakter en stor andel avskogsbeståndet fram till 1960-70-talet, men har sedan minskat i takt med attde ersatts av planterad gran. Det finns idag, bland annat i Skogsstyrelsensriktlinjer, en uttalad strävan mot en högre andel ädellövskog på debreddgrader som ingår i dessa trädslags naturliga utbredningsområden. På såsätt kan det projekt, som studien beskriver, anses ligga rätt i tiden.Inledningsvis ger rapporten en översikt över skog och skogsbruk somkunskapsområde och bakgrunden till att vi nu ser tendenser till att detraditionella formerna av skogsbruk, där ekonomi är den dominerandestyrfaktorn, börjar ge vika för skogsbruksmetoder som gynnar ävennaturvårds- och sociala värden. Detta är en tendens som nu börjar fågenomslag såväl i myndigheters styrdokument som i forskning ochkunskapsutveckling.I rapporten beskrivs utvecklingen av en tio-årig plantering av bok, delsresultatet av den första fasen, etableringsfasen, och dels en bedömning av hurden framtida planeringen kan göras utifrån de uppställda målen med fokus påde skötselformer som kan betecknas som ?hyggesfria? eller ?naturnära?metoder.I analysen av studiens resultat görs jämförelser dels med liknande studier ochdels med schabloniserade tillväxtprognoser för bok.

The bioenergy market has been introduced relatively late in a perspective of the Swedish forestry. Nowadays branches and tops are used more frequently as bioenergy after harvesting. Therefore, it has developed a competitive situation between pulpwood and bioenergy. This situation has even established some questions. Two examples of these are: ? At what top diameter should the final piece of pulpwood be crosscut to get the best economically result? ? Should the top diameter, at the final piece of pulpwood, be crosscut at a thicker or smaller diameter than what is done today? The purpose of this report is to answer these two questions when the harvesting is made motor manually in Beech stands.
