Organic acids in liquid feed for pigs - palatability and feed intake
Fermented liquid feed is well known for its health promoting effects on piglets. High levels of lactic acid are desired in the feed together with low levels of acetic acid and certain biogenic amines. Limits for acetic acid have been suggested to be 30-40 mmol/kg to avoid a decreased palatability of the feed; however, few studies have been performed. The purpose of this trial was therefore to examine which levels of lactic acid and acetic acid that can be accepted in a fermented feed without affecting the feed intake and thus the weight gain of the pig. A total of 60 pigs (Yorkshire/ Hampshire) were used in a trial during two weeks, between 9-11 weeks of age.
Molekylärgenetisk analys av dilaterad cardiomyopati hos hund :
Canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease with high morbidity and mortality and with a high prevalence in certain breeds. Predominatly large breeds are affected, such as Great danes, Newfoundlands, Deerhounds and Dobermanns. One exception is Cocker spaniels, where both American and English Cocker spaniels are affected in a quite high frequency.
Cardiomyopathy is characterised as a disease that affects the myocardium and gives an impaired heart function. To diagnose DCM following criteria have to be observed:
1. Dilation of the left ventricle.
2. Reduced systolic heart function.
3. Increased sphericity of the left ventricle.
To be certain of the diagnosis, alternative reasons for the symptoms such as lung- and heart diseases with other etiologies have to be excluded
Two different types of DCM have been found upon histological examination.
Effect of botanically diverse pastures on the milk fatty acid profiles in New Zealand dairy cows
Botanically diverse pastures are commonly used in New Zealand to reduce the ruminant environmental impact by reducing the methane production from the rumen digestion. In order to evaluate the effects diverse pasture species have on the milk fatty acid profile seventy-two lactating Friesian-Jersey crossbred dairy cows were used in a randomised block design with two replicates of six treatments. Six different pasture mixtures were fed at a daily allowance of approximately 15 kg DM/cow/day. The mixtures were categorised as either a simple or a diverse pasture. The simple mixtures all contained white clover with the addition of either a standard diploid perennial ryegrass (RG), a diploid high sugar ryegrass (HS) or tall fescue (TF).
Cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in nutrient solution from greenhouse tomato production : a possibility to reduce nutrient levels and produce commercially interesting metabolites
The idea of using algae in different areas and exploring its possibilities is nothing new. Already in the early 1950s microalgae was explored as a possible food resource because of its high protein content. Lately there has been an increased interest in its potential for industrial use. Wastewater treatment is a possible use of algae since the algae grow well on the nutrients present in the water. This offers the possibility to grow algae for nutrient reduction and use the biomass for energy or animal feed since many alga species has a good nutritional value.
Approximately 800-1000 m3 water is applied per 1000 m2 of greenhouse area during one season in a tomato production.
Kan mjölkkors utnyttjande av vallprotein bli bättre? : utfodringsstrategier och konserveringsmetoder
The purpose with this literature study was to investigate the possibilities for improvement of forage protein in dairy cows with focus on feeding strategies and conservation of forage protein. The utilization of forage protein in dairy cows is often not that efficient as it could be. The feed crude protein consists of both true proteins and non protein nitrogen. The digestion of proteins in the rumen depends on the protein degradation rate and the ability of the microbes to synthesize microbial protein. The microbes need a balance between carbohydrates that provide them with energy and proteins that are degradable in the rumen.
The taste of the dairy product is probably the main factor determining consumer?s dairy products choice. Consequently it is of great importance that the product tastes good and as expected every time. Off-flavors in milk can be caused by for example oxidation of the milk fat. Since copper is a prooxidant, a high copper content in the milk can cause oxidation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate which apple cultivars are best suited for production of juice and cider. The study was limited to 41 cultivars. Common as well as uncommon apple cultivars were selected from available cultivars in the cold storage at Balsgård, Department of Horticultural Plant Breeding and Biotechnology, SLU.The practical part of the study consisted of the apples being pressed, and then the juice characteristics being assessed by appropriate criteria and methods of analysis. The analyses consisted of measurment of soluble sugars with a refractometer (Brix), titration of total acidity, determination of total phenolic content with a spectrophotometer, estimation of alcohol content by density meters and qualitative taste tests. The study did not account for different maturity of cultivars. Different apple cultivars were pressed on separate occasions, before and after Christmas 2010.
Korsförlamning hos häst : fodrets påverkan
The purpose of this thesis has been to gather knowledge about the complaints of tying-up in
horses and to show that the importance of feeding. The thesis includes a literature review of
tying-up how preventative measures by feeding can be made. In the equine sport, crosscountry,
horses occasionally suffers from tying-up, a muscle disease. An increased knowledge
about the disease is demanded by riders and trainers as the disease disrupts training and
competition of suffered horses. A cross-country horse works very hard in training and during
competitions but the work bouts are long enough for the muscle cells to use aerobic pathways
in the metabolism.
Allanblackia stuhlmannii ? a tree under current domestication: what are the soil requirements?
Allanblackia is a genus of trees that grows in the rainforests of West, Central and Eastern Africa. Its big fruits contain seeds very rich in oil which has been used by
local communities for cooking and making soaps. The native stands are threatened by overexploitation and the demand for the oil is much greater than the supply.
Domestication programs, aiming at introducing the trees to small holder agroforestry systems, have been started for some of the species. The main aim of this study was to investigate the soil requirements of Allanblackia
stuhlmannii in terms of chemical and physical parameters, as revealed by the soil conditions in native stands. Another aim was to see if these varied along an altitudinal transect.
Ledarskap & management i storskalig smågrisproduktion
This study has been done in order to map the supply of vegetarian and vegan food products in Sweden for business clients and consumers. A total of 665 food stuffs were found and classified into six categories. The biggest category was meat substitutes with 302 products and the second largest category was sandwich spreads with 150 different products. Within the remaining categories a varied number of products were found; 86 beverages, 64 cooking accessories, 34 milk free ice creams and 29 plant based yogurts. Of the meat substitutes were 28 only available for business clients.
In organic animal production, synthetic amino acids are not allowed. Therefore, a higher level of crude protein is needed in the diet to pigs, which lead to more nitrogen (N) excreted in the faeces and urine. N can be emitted to the air in the form of e.g. ammonia (NH3), which contributes to eutrophication and acidification and as nitrous oxide (N2O), which is a very potent greenhouse gas. The emission of N can be reduced by e.g.
Stärkelsenedbrytningens betydelse för mjölkkors konsumtionsmönster och mjölkproduktion :
Feed intake in dairy cows is regulated by a variety of factors influencing hunger and satiety.
One of the regulation systems includes the short chain fatty acids produced during feed
degradation in the rumen. Starch can be digested either in the rumen where short chain fatty
acids are produced or in the small intestine where glucose is the end product. Since glucose
does not have the same effect on satiety that short chain fatty acids have, the site of starch
digestion might be an important factor that affects feed intake and milk production. The aim
of this study was to investigate the effects of site of starch digestion on feeding behaviour
(feed intake, consumption time, and eating frequency) and milk production.
Because feeding behaviour is closely connected to the cows? environment, the study also
included observations of behaviour.
Three different feed rations were compared.
Distillers? grain is a by-product of ethanol production. Corn, wheat and barley are the grains
that are generally used in the distillery process. Distillers? grain is rich in protein and
phosphorus.
Användarvänlighet i blötutfodring : enkätstudie för smågrisproducenter
It is possible to affect the feed costs in different ways. By steeping or fermentation the digestibility of the feed is improved for the animals with a natural process in the wet feeding system Steeping means that the feed is soaked some hours before feeding. This process activatesenzymes and improves the digestibility of for example phosphorus in the feed and make it more accessible to the animal. Wet feeding can be fermented or not. Fermentationmeans that the feed has been soaked for a certain length of time so that a biological process is started.
